Italy 2012 RE (released March 2013)

Por Larranaga small robusto

4 x 50

The first third opens up straight away into big flavours. This format really needs to jump into action straight away if they are to earn their keep and these are really doing it at the moment. Classic Por Larranaga flavours of sweet nuts and sweet cedar. Perfect for a hot Summer day such as it is today.

Second third is continuing with high quality flavours. A richness picks up across the board and milk chocolate has appeared. The sweet news have turns into a dense roasted chestnut and berry fruits have started to creep in.

This final third showed some excellent promise for the coming years. The berry fruits have taken centre stage, deep and dark black and red current have replaced the milk chocolate entirely while the cedar is sitting in the background albeit in a much darker profile. A surprising flavour was a distinctively aromatic Diplomatico/perfume nature that appeared for a few puffs then vanished. This whole ending can be summed up as a rich and brooding sickly-sweet concentrate. Almost like a jam/preserve.

For the age the burn has been top notch, excellent construction (this has been true across the three I've had before). The balance of this release is exquisite, one of the best Por Larranage releases. Compared to the strong and dark profile of the 2007 Asia Pacific release, this is medium in body but milder in flavours. If you missed out on the UK Magnifcos release a few years back these are almost identical at this stage. NO youth is showing what-so-ever at any point in the cigar.

94/100

Huge potential for four or five years down the line.

I love this wee cigar. I found a half box in Naples in July and loved it the second I sparked up!

I've never been a PL fan but I'm definitely going to revisit the range

Seriously brethren, if you come across this cigar grab them as they're cracking. At only E7 a pop I can't imagine they'll be on the shelves for long.....

Very nice review, CQ. Great write-up and pictures (love that ashtray too).

Question - these PL two-tone bands...is this the only time they've been used on PL's aside from that UK RE from a few years back? Is this the same one, or a different styling?

They are nearly the same as the PL Magnifico and regalias de Londres apart from the size and on the sides these have 'small robusto' in white.

The gloss and matte gold are a little more vibrant on the UK ones but I think the plates must be very similar as they share the same rough JF:SC script on the front of the band which I think was a nod to Jemma Freeman and Simon Chase who worked on the new bands for the magnificos

Nice review and pictures. I smoked two singles of these so far and they were very young but showed a lot of potential. I put my box in one of my storage coolidors in the basement :)

Love the bands!!

Almost identical to Magnificos? Holy crap. Quite a statement on these little buggers! I'll have to give it a try now. Thanks for the review.

The second comment was @ the bands!! :D

Obviously you're not going to get the same experience in this vitola as the magnificos but it's the closest blend I've tasted to it, maybe no black tea in these but I guess time will tell! Certainly I would be happy to call this "mini magnificos" :D

Huge potential!
