This could be a lucrative business :). With 1000% profit(costs $30 in Cuba) I am afraid that Cuba will run out of ashtrays LOL

So last night I am rushing home to get Valentine's Day present to my wife and my neighbor (who I smoke with quite often) yells at me to stop over.  I knew he had been in Cuba for a week.  I get up on

I didn't care for the heavy marble bases they added to the large ones.  If you thought they were heavy before they are extremely heavy now.  I passed on the large with the heavy base and got 2 smaller

Yep, marble staircases will soon be a thing of the past in Habana!

And the ashtray was one of the smaller ones too... Imagine how much the bigger would have sold for!!!

I got the small one as I was concerned about confiscation. I wished I had gotten the large one....Next time.

Actually, it was the larger / bigger one. The only size bigger than that is the multi-layered jumbo one that used to be on pedestals in the lobby, but they're next to impossible to find there (only seen them for sale once in the last 4 trips or so).

I saw the larger ones at the Nacional hotel on my first day there in Nov 2014. Sold out of them pretty quick though.

I muled back 2 ashtrays and planned my weight beforehand. IIRC it was either 16 or 18 kilos in total and I ended up putting them in my checked baggage because I already had a ton of carry on.

Mine weighs 7 kg.

The customs staff at Jose Marti didn't mind that it was in my carry on bag.

However, when I arrived in Mexico City to head on to LAX, the customs staff wouldn't let me take it through. They said it had to be checked in, as it was a potential weapon onboard. The only problem was that I had already checked my luggage in..... Took me about an hour to sort that mess out, as I had to find a way to get my checked in bag back.

As mentioned in another thread, I then had problems at LAX with it being in my checked in bag.....

That ashtray took some effort to make it half way across the world.

Yup, was referring to the 10 inch diameter much heavier ashtray. I bet they could fetch $4-500 on open market.

As soon as they start the ferry service with the 200# weight allowance I think a quick trip down will be in order.

Take the wife and come back with 30-40 of these!

Stayed there for a few days earlier this month and they had none available.

Only the ones in the lobby area that are glued down to prevent thieves from walking away with them.

I couldn't believe they had none when I was there. Slacking big time.

Damn, what is the hype about those things? I don't understand it. But y'all are making me want one.

The hype is they are a timeless piece of cigar history coming from most famous hotel in Cuba, made of marble and harder to get than most cigars unless you visit the island yourself.....something that you can hand down from generation to generation and a talking piece for years to come

Ones on eBay in the past have gone for over $300 for something that is $35 in Havana

My most special and sacred tobacco item I own but thats just me :)

As I've posted before, my only regret (and a big one) from my trip to Cuba was not buying one and lugging it back. If I had only known then how easy it is to get quality CC's via this site, I would have probably foregone loading luggage up with boxes of cigars and brought a couple of these back. I plan on going back some day and WILL bring one back.

All right, you have done a fine job convincing me. I already booked my ticket to the island next February, will try to haul one back.

They didn't have them HN ashers in June nor in September this year ...

'spossed to arrive next February ... maybe ... if the marble is there :-)

Good luck - you might be better off ungluing the big ones off the Lobby tables

Smile into the cameras when you do it :-)

I guess more space for cigars then...

Although everyone mentions marble, some of the Hotel Nacional ashstrays appear to be granite rather than marble, based on the photographs. Both being natural stones
