Another spring, another year, another series of devastating storms throughout the U.S. midwest.

We get some of these storm systems creeping into the extreme end of southwestern Ontario now and again, but generally not with the ferocity and intensity that's experienced in the U.S. Mississipi and Ohio River valleys.

With a few sporadic and deadly storms over the last few days, I just caught a CBC News feed that at least 37 have been confirmed dead in a massive Oklahoma tornado system. Over half a mile wide, and winds over 300 kph, and that it's already been rated at least an EF4 (second strongest) tornado. And, the storm system isn't done yet, nor is the tally of damage or people injured/killed.

Fingers crossed and best wishes for all of you around there. Buckle down and hope you weather through it okay.

Just watching the live press conference feed.

Looks like this hit Moore, OK, a suburb of Oklahoma City. It's devastating, when you also consider this...

46 people dead in Moore's '99 tornado

The same suburb was hit hard by a tornado in 1999. That storm had the distinction of producing the highest winds ever recorded near the earth's surface — 486 km/h. 46 people died during the 1999 storm.

Prayers and best wishes for all affected in that area.

I saw the coverage on the nightly news and it looks absolutely devastating.

Thoughts and prayers for everyone involved.

They are reporting at least 51 dead right now. Very sad!

For a few years was involved in hauling John Deer tractor parts throughout Kansas and OK. Good people and my heart goes out to anyone affected.

CNN is reporting that the unprocessed death toll has risen to 91 so far during the night. 40 children, maybe more could be included in this updated total. It breaks my heart.

It looks like where we are in Texas is going to get hit hard again tomorrow too, praying for the best!

So very sad ,those poor children

My thoughts and prayers go out to all,and for sky fall and all Texans and other areas at risk stay safe

Pardon my ignorance but don't tornado affected areas have bunkers under the houses etc ,just curious

Cheers all and stay safe

Yes, most places do. Even where I live in southwestern Ontario have some places with that. Most of those though were from old WWII stuff, but also for the occasional tornadoes (my hometown only about a handful of years ago finally took down it's still functioning WWII-era airraid / tornado warning siren).

But, most of those are only designed to withstand up to an F/EF-3 tornado. Mostly what we get in Ontario is the fringe ones, usually F-0 to F-2, after they've already tore through the U.S. midwest and weakened some. Once you hit F-4 and F-5, plus the fact that some of these tornadoes can hit 1/2 mile to a mile WIDE, the unrelenting power is just devastating. Basements and reinforced structures or not, the sheer power and suction can be devastating.

Wow. Yup....it's May.

This spring has been definitely below average and quiet for storm activity in the midwest. Unfortunately, the last 72 hours (and the following 48) look to reverse that trend.

Prayers and best wishes continuing for all in the areas. Fingers crossed for you's.

Finally in the clear! Been under a Tornado Warning since 12:30. The Tornado Sirens went off twice, we bunkered down in the closet. Lots of rain and wind now. Lucky this time!

4 inches of rain and counting in just 3 hours.
