charlesod Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 I'm heading to San Antonio Texas this weekend for a conference. I've never been there before. I know we have some Texans around here. I here tell we have come barbecue experts, too. So, who has the skinny on barbecue in San Antonio? Where should I eat this Saturday night?
Deemancpa Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Rudy's BBQ. If you have a car then Lockhart & /or Luling id about an hour drive. d
warren516 Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 I haven't been there but from what I have seen here on the forums, you can't go wrong at Brazoeagle's back yard Bar-B-Que.
Skyfall Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Agreed, if you have a car, Lockhart is the way to go, but if you are just there for the weekend, I doubt you want to drive. I do not like Rudy's, never have really. It's ok for a chain BBQ joint, but so is Mcdonalds. My opinion, San Antonio is not really known for quality BBQ per se, like many other areas of Texas. Also the stlye of BBQ indicative to San Antonio is different than say Central Texas style too. Smokey Mo's would be my go to BBQ if you were hell bent on eating BBQ while in town. I would recommend other cuisines to enjoy during your stay that will be more enjoyable than BBQ. El Chaparral - For Mexican Food!! Runner Ups:La Fogata, Mi Tierra, Pericos No Brainer: Chester's Cheesburgers - Best Burger I've had! - Runner Up - Bobby J's. Breakfast No Brainer "Must Do" - Magnolia Pancake Haus Around the River Walk - Biga on the Banks, Luke, Boudro's, Fig Tree Honorable mention depending on where you are staying: The Yardhouse Grey Moss Inn Aldos Texas De Brazil Chango's Havana Club!!!!!!! What part of town are you staying in?
Skyfall Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Also I remembered an old thread with some help too..... http://www.friendsofhabanos.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=112370&hl=+san%20+antonio#entry342563

Skyfall Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 I'll be at the La Cantera Resort. Sounds like Changos is the place or maybe Chester's. Thanks for the tips!!! If you are at La Cantera (Which I love!!!) You can walk to the Yardhouse (A MUST) with a great patio, and you can also walk to Kona Grill and Z'Tejas!!! All of these are located at the shops of La Cantera. Z'Tejas has great food too. You will also be close to Chango's, Aldo's, Chesters (A Must) and, Grey Moss Inn & El Chaparral I highly recommend making it to Magnolia Pancake Haus one morning!!!
khomeinist Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Luling City Market is about an hour from where you are staying. If you are serious about BBQ, then I highly recommend they you motivate for that excursion. They should be open until 7 pm, though BBQ is usually best before noon. Pass on the Tex-Mex.

Why pass on Tex-Mex? Z'Tejas has a Chicken Fried Ribeye with Poblano Mashed Potatoes that is amazing!!!
khomeinist Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Yeah. I'd rather go to Luling and get iconic brisket over a fried ribeye at a chain restaurant. Call me crazy. Lmao. Cmon son.
khomeinist Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Fantastic Mexican cuisine can be found at Hugo's in Houston. Drive over here and dinner is on me.
jtvrtas Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Was in Austin on business a few months back, and we were taken to a couple of places in Lockhart. One of them was Black's Barbecue. Amazing barbecue...absolutely amazing.
Skyfall Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Was in Austin on business a few months back, and we were taken to a couple of places in Lockhart. One of them was Black's Barbecue. Amazing barbecue...absolutely amazing. Black's in my opinion is easily the Best BBQ in Texas and the Nation!!!!!! hands down! But, a decent drive from San Antonio, especially if you are in town for a conference.
Skyfall Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Yeah. I'd rather go to Luling and get iconic brisket over a fried ribeye at a chain restaurant. Call me crazy. Lmao. Cmon son. Z'Tejas started out and for years was just one location in Austin, they only recently branched out mildly. I'd rather have their CFS than any BBQ in San Antonio. Being in town for a conference, probably strapped for time already, driving an hour and a half, one way for BBQ is probably not logical. And if you are driving to Luling, you might as well just keep going to the "real stuff" in Lockhart!!! C'mon Son!!!!!
khomeinist Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 City Market in Luling is not the real thing? Oh my. You probably thing Kreuz Market is still good. Smittys in Lockhart Goofball chain Texmex. Pass!!!! COME ON SON!!!!!!
Skyfall Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 how is smokeymo's? authentic? Smokey Mo's is the best representation for BBQ in San Antonio.
Skyfall Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 City Market in Luling is not the real thing? Oh my. You probably thing Kreuz Market is still good. Smittys in Lockhart Goofball chain Texmex. Pass!!!! COME ON SON!!!!!! I like the sausage at Kreuz only, and I don't like Smittys' My list: It's Black's in Lockhart is #1, #2 it's Snow's in Lexington, #3 Franklin's in Austin, #4 Tie : Jaspers/Viteks in Waco, #5 Tie: Coopers/Saltlick/Louie Mueller I would like Luling City Market more if they still served Beef Ribs, I just have never thought their offerings compared to the others. Black's does have 50 years head start on LCM.
khomeinist Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Smoky Mos is a chain. So PASS Your list is fine. I never disputed Blacks. I prefer City Market for overall ambiance. Blacks might have a decade or two on City Market but not fifty years. Please don't confuse City Market with Luling City Market in Houston (an understandable mistake). http://www.houstonpress.com/2005-05-26/dining/barbecue-identity-theft/ I only eat brisket. I have other sources for sausage, ribs, barbacoa, etc. etc. I haven't tried the Waco spots yet. I agree that Rudy's is not great. Virgies in Houston is putting out excellent brisket. Fargo's Pit BBQ in Bryan is also stellar.
Skyfall Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Nothing wrong with local chains. If by chain, you mean more than one location. Coopers is now a chain, Salt Lick is now a chain, Smokey Mo's is the only decent BBQ in San Antonio, the fact that they have expanded locations, doesn't mean the BBQ isn't good for San Antonio selection compared to others in the area. I highly suggest next time you are in Lockhart to get the Beef Rib at Blacks!!!! If you are a pure Brisket man, have you eaten the Brisket at Franklins yet?
daggersarge Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 If your strapped for time and need a place close to where you're staying you may want to try Rudy's Country Store & Bar-B-Q just 6 miles away. Voted best BBQ in San Antonio by the people who live in San Antonio. 24152 W. IH 10 San Antonio, TX 78257
Skyfall Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Texas Monthly's new list of top 50 BBQ joints in Texas only has two listed for the San Antonio area , and they are: The Granary 'Cue and Brew Two Bros. BBQ Market ......I've never been there, so can't comment.
zeebra Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 looks like the BBQ is covered. Yummm, I love Texas BBQ!!!! Glad I live here!!! And for breakfast, def go to Pancake Haus. This is what I had last week when I was visiting my sister.

I'll attempt to make it to the Magnolia as well. I really appreciate the advice.
