First Lady Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 We are stuck indoors at the moment with cyclonic winds and horizontal rain, the past 24 hours have been the worst with this wind which has battered our house, watching our big tree in the front yard as branch after branch goes flying down the road. At least we don't have to worry abou flooding like the poor people who lost everything two years ago in Laidley and out west it is looking like a repeat of our big floods of 2011, Brisbane is due to flood again , crazy to think until five days ago we were so dry th grass was crumbling under our feet Ken hope you are safe honey . Guys in Sydney and surrounding areas take care it is crazy and it is really bad so keep out of it Be safe everyone
ChanceSchmerr Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Had no idea, Lisa - thoughts and prayers are with you - hoping the Brisbane area doesn't have to go through the nightmare of the floods from a couple years back!
Guest rob Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 It is definitely testing....I had a truckload of my my backyard washed down my driveway and onto the street 2 nights ago....I spent a day with a shovel and wheel barrow bringing back up hill! And yeah, ironic to think that until 2 days ago it was tinder dry and a dust bowl! The back of my place got flooded as we got a localised downpour - my guage got 100ml / 4 inches in 30 mins. Thoughts go out to those affected.
AlohaStyle Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Wow, 4 inches in 30 minutes!?! And I thought it rained here in Seattle! And to think the tennis looked so nice and sunny just yesterday. Stay safe everyone!
First Lady Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 Melbourne is the bottom of Australia and we are up north, it is blowing 40 knots and gusting to 46 knots at the moment lost another tree but that is nothing . There is going to be a huge storm surge in three hours which is going to cause lots of damage Brisbane and surrounding area have had massive rain, some areas have recorded around 500ml in 24 hours and others 1000ml in 36 hours hence the flooding and this is a state that hasn't seen a lot of rain in three months... Only in Australia
Munts Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Hmmmm. I woke up this morning to find a gum tree had come down and taken out the side fence and damaged part of the house. Had a heap of water coming into the bathroom and laundry. Managed to repair and replace about 12 broken roof tiles. That seems to have stopped the water coming in. Guttering is gone though.
CanuckSARTech Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Just been seeing a bunch about this on the international news tonight. Fingers crossed and best wishes for all out there in Oz who are up against this storm system.
Warren Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Those big ghost gums are beautiful looking trees but their root base is very shallow. We used to have a few of them in our front yard and they all became horizontal a few years ago during a storm. Never leave one near your house.
Drguano Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 This makes our 0 degrees, freezing rain and snow seem almost pleasant. I hope things improve down there.
Ken Gargett Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Ken hope you are safe honey . Be safe everyone ta lisa, hope you and all are safe. i abandoned ship/home yesterday as the creek was coming up - nothing like a few years ago but scary enough and with a lot more rain coming, thought it best. went over to family. it can rise really quickly. the family lost power early this morning. we have just had a break in the rain so i dashed back home. creek well up. will try for some photos - but obviously was 6 to 10 foot higher (so must have gone close to past highs. bloody terrifying). currently, the creek raguing past, just on the edge of the house. have not been underneath to see what happened. not game. some huge trees knocked flat. bizarrely, my place has power though all around does not. traffic lights, shopping centres, everything else is out? just heard mandatory evacuation for bundaberg. hell! will keep an eye on the level of the creek and if it starts rising again, i'll bail out again. the brizzy and bremer are supposed to rise considerably but my creek tends to operate "locally". just takes the local catchment, which was huge, but if not much more rain - and i gather that we are past the main rain - then i'd hope it recedes. problem is at night when you simply can't see it. i heard something like a metre of rain in 24 hours at the coast. and the tweed hospital has had a large chunk of roof ripped off. scary stuff. be safe, all.
