This afternoon I tried the second La Escepcion Selectos Finos from my box (LEM Nov 11 - #1436 of 2000).

This second experience was somewhat similar to the first one a couple of months ago, yet a little worst. Construction was flawless and the cigars all look beautiful, but flavours are so dark. Dark as in charcoal, (over)toasted tobacco, mineral... The cigar had no pepper through the nose whatsoever, which I was sort of expecting. However during the first third I did see a light at the end of the tunnel, maybe biscuits and tea, but them it was gone again. The burned rubber taste was so strong that nothing else was distinguishable and I tossed it by the middle of the second third.

Has anyone smoked these recently? Would love to hear inputs as I know many people love these.

I honestly hope they're just going through a weird time and not the whole box is as bad as the first two cigars I've had.

I traded for a half box early last summer, and quickly went through all but 2. They have all tasted so dramatically different than what you describe here. Maybe I will smoke one of my last, and see if they've gotten sick.

Have you verified their authenticity yet? (Just to be sure)

I did a review a few months back. Totally different experience than your description. My nose hairs were on fire!

I did read your review right after I tossed mine! I hope I was just unlucky in the first two.

I have smoked a handful and absolutely loved every one. Perhaps you got a bad box. It is Cuba after all.

That's always a possibility. But what bugs me is that the cigars look and smell great. Wrappers very oily. But appearences can be deceiving...

Man, for something that looks SO GOOD, it's a shame if they're all duds. Dip into the second layer for your next attempt maybe.

These are going to take several more years to come around IMO. Think Hoyo des Dieux yet with more ligero. I wouldn't touch these for five more years.

Exactly what I said when these first came around.

I was considering tracking down a box.

Me and my credit card thank you for your perspective.

I will instead purchase a couple singles before jumping in with both feet.

I've smoked three so far. First was superb- pure pleasure. Second was good but muted- probably sick. Third back in stellar form. 22 to go.

I was gifted one from a dear fellow some months back so I could satisfy my curiosity. And nah - I wasn't blown away at all by this stick. Very bland and flavorless in addition to the fact that it's not my favorite size to boot.

I haven't smoked one since the Summer. And as luck would have it, I have never experienced what you just went through. Every stick has been a treat and always different from each other. The one common element? They are strong even though they will not always taste that way. It just creeps up on you by the time you're at the final third. Looking at your photos, I'd say the box is legit. I see nothing wrong there. Same box code as mine. AFAIK, I haven't seen a different box code for these. This is an exceptional release. Hard to come by, not cheap, but great smokes to enjoy now and possibly for years to come. I'm wondering if your storage conditions failed you on that stick? I hope the rest are better. :)

I still characterize the strength of these cigars like a blunt instrument - where the strength and power of say a Partagas SdC or Presidentes is like a blade or a gunshot, La Espy hits you like a large club or a shove from a big person. Huge impact, but you're almost not sure where the point of impact is. You just know you're seeing stars!!!!!

Love the size and I do think they are very special. Could not smoke them every day (I have only a few) and maybe that may be the only smoke for the afternoon. Plus I like watching Frank enjoy them so much. What can I tell ya.

I have had a few of these from two different boxes and both have been exceptional despite their youth. In time these will be classics.

Smoking one right now and it is heaven. Strength really picking up in the final third but wasnt over the top for the first half or so. This is my first one and it has been a real treat! I will put one box away for a long nap
