Autopilot Supplier Ends Relationship With Tesla Over Safety Concerns

tx2ilvscvthg7zjtkx9s.jpg

Mobileye is breaking up with Tesla. The Israel-based company helps Tesla build its Autopilot driver assistance systems, but on Thursday, the company’s chairman said Tesla was “pushing the envelope in terms of safety” and discontinued its relationship with the automaker.

In an interview with Reuters, Mobileye chairman and CTO Amnon Shashua said, “[Autopilot] is not designed to cover all possible crash situations in a safe manner… No matter how you spin it, [Autopilot] is not designed for that. It is a driver assistance system and not a driverless system.”

Mobileye’s decision to end its relationship with Tesla comes after several fatal crashes have raised questions about the safety of Tesla’s Autopilot technology. In June, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the first fatal crash while a driver was using autopilot mode.

This week, reports from China have surfaced that the first fatality involving the car’s Autopilot mode allegedly happened in January of this year, months before US regulators reported the first autopilot death. According to Chinese government news channel CCTV, a 23-year-old borrowed his father’s Tesla and slammed into a road sweeper on a highway about 480km south of Beijing. The TV report shows a dashcam of the driver cruising into a huge orange truck, and shows no signs of the driver jolting or hitting the brakes before impact — leaving many to believe he was using Autopilot mode.

Former employees have also voiced their concerns about the feature. In July, former Tesla Autopilot engineer Eric Meadows told CNN Money a story about testing the feature in Los Angeles in mid-2015 just before it launched to the public. He said he was pulled over by police on the suspicion that he was driving drunk while using Autopilot mode. He said the car was struggling to make sharp turns on its own.

The engineer said he was “pushing the limit” of Autopilot mode and assumed customers would do the same thing. “I came in with this mentality that Elon had: I want to go from on-ramp to off-ramp, and the driver doesn’t have to do anything… The last two months I was scared someone was going to die,” he said. Meadows was fired for “poor performance” shortly after raising concerns.

Despite months of public outcry, Tesla is standing its ground. In a statement to Reuters, the company said that it never described Autopilot as a self-driving or autonomous feature despite the fact that the name implies it. “Since the release of Autopilot, we’ve continuously educated customers on the use of the features, reminding them that they’re responsible to keep their hands on the wheel and remain alert and present when using Autopilot,” Tesla said. “Drivers must be prepared to take control at all times.”

Earlier this week, Tesla released a software update for the Autopilot feature. The update will allow the system to use existing radar sensors to gather more information about the terrain around the vehicle. As Jalopnik reported, the big change will rely more on Tesla’s integrated radar system as opposed to its camera-based setup. Musk went so far as to say it was “very likely” that the new version would have prevented the first fatal wreck in May.

Now, it appears that Musk has a whole new problem to deal with.

The World's Most Sophisticated ATM Skimmers Are Starting To Appear In The USA

The World's Most Sophisticated ATM Skimmers Are Starting to Appear in America

It might finally be time to abandon cash altogether as a new type of ATM card skimmer that uses a technique called “periscope skimming” has officially been found installed in ATMs in the United States, and from the outside there’s no way to tell that a machine has been compromised.

Most card skimmers are designed to be quickly installed over an ATM’s existing card slot to capture account information as the machines are used over the course of a few days. They’re easy and less risky to install and retrieve, but many ATMs are designed to prevent their installation. A trained eye can usually spot them in use.

But that’s not the case with a periscope skimmer. As KrebsonSecurity explains, they’re designed to be installed inside an ATM, out of sight, connecting to both the motorised card reader and the circuit board where cardholder data is transferred to the rest of the machine’s electronics to process transactions. They do require access to inside an ATM via a key, but once installed they can operate for close to 14 days and collect up to 32,000 card numbers before their battery runs out.

A recent non-public alert issued by a Connecticut financial crimes task force to banks revealed that a periscope skimming device was discovered inside an ATM in Greenwich in August, while a second was found inside an ATM in Pennsylvania in early September.

The good news about this reveal, at least for the time being, is that neither skimmer included a way to capture an ATM user’s PIN number required to process transactions. It is suspected that both of these devices were being used for testing purposes only, but you can assume that whoever was responsible for developing the hardware must surely have plans to grab that information from unsuspecting ATM users as well.

SWEDEN'S MOST PRIMITIVE HOTEL LETS YOU ESCAPE IN A TOTALLY UNIQUE WAY

Sweden's Most Primitive Hotel Lets You Escape In A Totally Unique Way image

These rustic sheds in Sweden invite guests to try roughing it for a few days like a stylish lumberjack from centuries past. Bare of basic modern luxuries like running water, heating, and electricity, these mossy huts promise you a vacation unlike any other. This is the real deal!

These rustic dwellings are part of the Kolarbyn Ecolodge which is a group of 12 lodges. Each one is heated by a cozy open fire and comes complete with warm sheep skins to sleep in. It's the perfect getaway to help you destress and disconnect.

"Spend some relaxing days in the forest. Hang out by the camp fire at night. Meet people from all over the world. And the Moose and Beaver tours is a must! You deserve more wild moments." We think that sounds pretty good.

1.jpg

"No, you don’t have to be Crocodile Dundee or Ray Mears to survive your holiday at Kolarbyn," explain the hut owners. "If you need any assistance at all, our helpful hosts are here to guide you through every step."

But what about the toilet? Like we already said, these huts don't have one. So guests must be comfortable with doing their business in the woods.

"If you need to visit the toilet, you are welcome to pee behind any tree. Just not on the berries!" the owners explain.

And if you get hungry, don't worry about having to collect and hunt your own food. There's a convenient storage shed full of delicious food, just waiting for you!

These huts go for 60 euro per night. Would you spend a holiday here?

How H.R. Giger Made Alien‘s Monster Beautiful and Terrifying

When Alien hit theaters in 1979, the monster on screen was unlike anything moviegoers had ever seen. The film’s deadly, parasitic Xenomorph was terrifying and grotesque, yet graceful and stunning. “I always wanted my alien to be a very beautiful thing, something aesthetic,” production designer H.R. Giger has said of his creation. “A monster isn’t just something disgusting; it can have a kind of beauty.”

Giger, a Swiss artist known as much for his darkly surreal paintings as for his cinematic work, is the subject of a new video essay that explores how his background in design informed not just the appearance of Alien‘s titular interstellar stowaway, but the look, feel, and pacing of the film, itself. The video, made by Kristian Williams, is a reminder of just how brilliant Giger’s Academy Award-winning design work was, and still is.

As Williams explains it, director Ridley Scott came across Giger’s Necronomicon, Giger’s first book dedicated to his macabre, biomechanical aesthetic, while trying to conceptualize what the film’s monster should look like. An illustration titled Necronom #4, depicting a sinuous creature with an elongated head, so affected Scott that he asked Giger to alter his original design only slightly.

Giger wound up working on the film’s entire production design. “Down the line I realized it made a lot of sense for Giger to design everything that was to do with the alien,” Ridley recalls in the video. “That includes the landscape and the spacecraft.” Giger’s morbid biology-meets-industrial touch can be see everywhere in LV426, but his alien was the showstopper.

Williams says that Giger himself fabricated the costumes, which made good use of his industrial design background. Every piece of the costume was considered, from the mouth-breathing apparatus on its back to the fact that its acidic blood required an acid-resistant exoskeleton (fun fact: the costume incorporated real bones, human and animal). Giger built the xenomorph’s lips from condoms, and nestled a real human skull into the tip of the alien’s cylindrical head. As the video points out, Giger’s aesthetic has become so acknowledged it has its own adjective “Gigeresque.”

In a time where monsters are the result of clicking around on a computer, it’s no wonder we’re still in awe of Giger’s wildly creative alien. Like all movie monsters, it’s a product of an artist’s imagination, but it’s a whole lot scarier when you can actually reach out and touch it.

RAY-BAN SIGNET

ray-ban-signet

63 years after it first hit the market, one of Ray Ban’s most popular styles is making a serious comeback. By the look of it, the Signet has only gotten better with age.

The re-release of this style is part of a broader rejuvenated interest in the look and feel of mid-century America. Seeing that an increasing number of homes, apartment buildings, and bars are retooling their interiors and exteriors to give off a ’50s vibe, it’s only fitting that you have the eyewear to match. Coming in either a combination of gold frame and green or brown lenses, black with silver, or black/gold with copper flash, these will stand out from the rest without even trying. In addition to a set of striking colorways, the new Signet also feature a couple of new updates. Primary among those changes is the addition of the new pin-stripes laser etched into the frames, and of course the higher quality lenses. Prices range from $170-$195. [Purchase]

For the Kids & @Fuzz Batman: The Animated Series Is Getting Its Own View-Master VR Experience

trgkzu29ribhy0th6qgl.jpg

If you were a kid in the ’90s you almost certainly have fond memories of the Bruce Timm-influenced Batman: The Animated Series cartoon. It’s still considered to be one of the best Batman TV series to date, and now Mattel is letting you step inside that world with a new special edition of its View-Master VR.

lrfgcmkmdbq9xw2koz8k.jpg

The actual VR hardware appears to be the first-generation View-Master VR, not the fancier View-Master Deluxe VR that will be available closer to the holidays. But that’s OK.

It still accepts pretty much any smartphone on the market, even older and smaller iPhones using an included adaptor, which is why it’s priced at a reasonable $US45 ($60) when it arrives on November 15. Compare that to a $US600 ($798) Oculus Rift setup that arrives without the gaming PC you need to power it, and that’s a downright bargain for a half-decent VR experience.

dkuvhzjabvi3fiteiipv.jpg

Besides the nifty Bat-inspired paint job, the new View-Master VR also includes exclusive access to a virtual reality experience that takes you inside Batman: The Animated Series, letting you explore the Batcave, fly the Batwing and go on missions to take down Two-Face, the Riddler and the Joker. It even includes voicework from the series’ original cast like Mark Hamill as the Joker, Kevin Conroy as Batman and Tara Strong as Batgirl. It isn’t quite as great as a brand-new episode of the cartoon would be, but it’s pretty damn close.

Three Months From Release, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Gets A New Composer

lwpijte5hkclewalbfaq.jpg

No matter what, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be the first Star Wars film not scored by John Williams. It just won’t be scored by who we thought. The Hollywood Reporter says Michael Giacchino just replaced Alexandre Desplat as the film’s composer.

The reason behind the change? Those damned reshoots. Apparently, because the reshoots pushed the schedule back so much, Desplat was no longer available to score the film. They asked Giacchino to step in, and he has.

For Star Wars fans, a Giacchino/Star Wars collaboration is something we long expected. The instant J.J. Abrams was brought on to direct The Force Awakens, we speculated that he’d replace Williams with his long-time collaborator. Obviously, that didn’t happen, but now we’ll hear a Giacchino Star Wars score only one year later, on the second film released under the new Disney umbrella.

To me, what’s most curious about this move is that it’s so close to release, Desplat had to have done some music for the film already. I wonder if Giacchino will be incorporating any of that, or just wiping the slate clean.

Giacchino won an Oscar for his music to Pixar’s Up but he’s also written some of the most memorable themes in recent memory. Inside Out, The Incredibles, Star Trek, Lost: All Giacchino.

Rogue One opens December 15.

For @Ken Gargett Telstra Delivered An iPhone 7 To A Pub In The Middle Of Nowhere

telstra_iphone7_barrow_creek_1.jpg

Barrow Creek is a long way from civilisation. It’s 300km from Alice Springs, and has a population of 4. But people all around Australia are receiving their iPhone 7 deliveries today, and Telstra made exactly that happen for the Barrow Creek Hotel’s publican, a bloke by the name of Les Pilton, who upgraded from an ancient Nokia flip-phone to an iPhone 7 Plus. He even got it in Matte Black — lucky guy.

Telstra says that this is probably the most remote iPhone 7 delivery around the world, and given Barrow Creek’s spot 280 kilometres up the Sturt Highway from Alice Springs and 220 kilometres down the Sturt from Tennant Creek, we’d believe them.

telstra_iphone7_barrow_creek_3.jpg

The telco’s local area manager for the NT, Neale Wigney, travelled 300km to hand-deliver the phone to Mr Pilton at 8:01AM this morning, just as doors opened at Apple Stores around the country. Fun fact: the Barrow Creek Hotel is older than the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and it’s the only stop along the 500km road between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. The town only gets Telstra coverage, but it’s 4GX — so it’s actually reasonably quick.

MIKA: I seriously don't understand how Ken can hate Telstra, such great service :lol3:

That Damn Doll Is Just As Freaky As You Remember In First Teaser For Annabelle 2

Yesterday, director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out) posted a peek at himself and his haunted-doll star on the set of the James Wan-produced Annabelle 2, the sequel to the hit that was spun off Wan’s The Conjuring. Today, we got the first teaser, in which Miranda Otto discovers a creepy li’l tea party.

CsVGPhDVIAAQCW9.jpg

Behind the scenes of #Annabelle2.

Here’s the description of Annabelle 2:

Several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.

Any ties to the first Annabelle, or to the Warrens — the Conjuring characters who keep the doll in their haunted-objects museum — remain unclear. But the real question is: What is it with Wan movies and nuns? We’ll find out more in May 2017, when Annabelle 2 is released.

The Bye Bye Man Trailer Will Drill Its Mantra Into Your Head

“Don’t say it, don’t think it.” Get ready to repeat that for the rest of the day. In The Bye Bye Man, a new horror film coming out in January, the villain gains strength not just when you say his name, but when you think about him, and the new trailer won’t let you forget it.

Directed by Stacy Title, The Bye Bye Man is the latest Hollywood attempt to introduce an iconic new horror bad guy. This time, they’re doing it by blending the principals of Candyman, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and a few others into a character that feels pretty unstoppable and terrifying. Check out the new trailer.

So if you literally can’t think about him, how can you get away from him? I guess you can’t, right? Like in the scene with Carrie-Anne Moss, the character isn’t saying his name, but he’s obviously thinking it ... so isn’t that just as bad? “Don’t say it, don’t think it,” right?

Obviously, this isn’t a film that worries too much about logic, so there doesn’t really have to be an answer. We can only hope the film delivers a complete, satisfying take on this amalgamation of ideas. If the third release date for the film actually sticks, it’ll be out January 13.

About the Video and accident from Pilot Thom Richard.

Dear Race Fans,

WARNING, GRAPHIC CRASH FOOTAGE (And some foul language).

On September 18, 2016, during the Gold final start we experienced an accident involving our F1 racer, ‘Hot Stuff’ and a fellow competitor’s airplane.

We were number four on the starting grid, which was the middle inside position with three aircraft on the front row, one to our right and three behind. Upon running the engine up in anticipation of the start, about 20 seconds before the green flag drop, the engine was not running well enough for flight, as you can hear from the audio, never mind racing. I made the decision to shut the engine down to signal the starters to halt the starting process. The flagman on my row put his hands in an ‘X’ over his head, as our procedures prescribe, and I opened my canopy to make it clear I was out of the race and so everyone could see me. The alternate airplane was signaled to taxi on to the runway to replace my entry. I felt confident the communications had reached the appropriate people and waited for personnel to push me off the runway.

However, much to my surprise, I saw the flagman run out on to the runway waving his hands over his head as if something was wrong. The aircraft to my right started rolling and a few seconds later the number six and eight aircraft flew by me on either side. All I could do at that point was hope the number seven (center) aircraft would clear me on the centerline to my right.

The impact was violent and loud. His left leading edge shaved off the top several inches from my vertical and skimmed the turtle-deck without touching until it impacted my right hand holding up the canopy, at well over sixty miles an hour. The left landing gear hit the top of the gull-wing center-section, blowing a hole in the top skin and impacted the rear face of the front spar so hard that it broke the landing gear clean off his airplane. The propeller sliced three evenly spaced gashes about mid span of my right wing, about a foot apart. The right landing gear sheared the wing off just short of the right wingtip. The impact spun me around nearly 180º, like a teacup ride at warp eight. The other aircraft came to rest several hundred feet in front of me with a folded gear, damaged wing and sheared propeller facing the other way as well. That pilot received no injuries.

Three things immediately came to mind. Make yourself as small as possible to avoid further injury until things stop moving. Once the aircraft came to rest, DON’T MOVE! And since I was not on fire, wait for help to arrive. I knew my hand was busted and was not looking forward to removing my glove. But it was more important to make sure I had not been struck in the head or hurt my neck or back. After assessing my situation I realized I did not have any further injuries and proceeded to shut the switches off and assist with un-strapping myself from the wreckage. Help was there very quickly, including my flagman.

Then I proceeded to ask the condition of the other pilot and how this had happened. The video should speak for itself. My next concern was to let my crew know I was OK. The one thing any spectator looks for in an accident are the correct number of flight suits walking around the wreckage after any crash, I made sure I did. Everything else can be fixed. Reno EMS quickly patched me up with a splint and had me walking back to my pit in no time. They really are good at what they do.

Hot Stuff suffered severe damage. It’ll be several months before we figure out what to do with her. I’m not the slightest bit upset over the accident. I, in fact, consider myself a very lucky man. Another four feet to the left and I would have been minced meat. Literally dodging a bullet. A busted up hand is a small price to pay. I’ll take it. It’ll heal. Though it is difficult to type one-handed.

I’ve said many times before and I’ll say it again, there’s risk in everything we do. But the counterpart to that is reward. I choose to cross the street because the risk of crossing the street is worth the reward of getting to the other side. Same thing with air racing, I’ll be back. Of course there’ll be a review of procedures, how to prevent something like this from happening again and a thorough investigation. I’ve used up another of my nine lives, but why would you have nine unless you plan to use them?… We live, learn and race on.

This 'The Conjuring 2' Mirror Prank Is Pretty Much My Worst Fear

Some people can’t look in the mirror in a dark room. Blame it on far too many horror films, or attempts at conjuring “Bloody Mary” as a kid?

Bringing some people's fears to life, the people at The Conjuring 2 decided to prank a bunch of viewers with that now-famous spooky nun. And the results are pretty funny.

Chris Pratt And Jennifer Lawrence's Interstellar Journey Goes Awry In The First Trailer For Passengers

Passengers tells the story of two people who mysteriously wake up from hibernation on a spaceship that still has 90 years left on its journey. From there, things go from bad to worse.

There’s a lot going on in this trailer: First, there’s the meet-cute between the only two conscious people on this ship. Then there’s a mysterious disaster striking the starship Avalon. And then there’s Laurence Fishburne, who suddenly shows up as literally the third human we see. Finally, Jim (Chris Pratt) says there’s something he needs to tell Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) about why she’s awake, since that detail was in earlier synopses of the film. (I’m not going to spoil it here.)

Mostly, it’s good to finally see a trailer for Passengers, which has been in limbo for years and gone through several rumoured casts. But other than that, this looks like a pretty typical space movie.

Passengers comes out January 1.

MacOS Sierra Is Out Today: Here's 5 Big New Features

macos_sierra_1.jpg

The latest free upgrade of Apple’s MacOS operating system — now that’s a tautology — is Sierra, and as of this morning it’s rolling out to every ‘net-connected Mac around the world. It’s more than just a new name, though; here are five things that MacOS Sierra can do that should give you a good reason to upgrade.

Siri: Talk To Your Mac

Inheriting all the features you’ll already know from your iPhone or iPad, Siri on the Mac also gets some desktop-specific hooks. It’ll search the Web and use Safari in the background while you’re typing away, but it’ll also search through your files and dive into your system preferences too — like Spotlight, but controlled with your voice.

Auto Unlock

If you’re part of the Apple ecosystem already — and you have an Apple Watch paired to your iPhone — then you’ve got an even better reason than usual to move up to Sierra. Any time that you move within typing distance of your Mac, it’ll automatically unlock within a couple of seconds using your Watch’s low-power Bluetooth.

Universal Clipboard

It’s as simple as it sounds. If you have your Mac alongside your iPhone and your iPad, and you copy a section of text — or an image, or a link, or whatever — you’ll be able to access that on any of the devices in front of you. If you’re the kind of person that emails yourself photos all the time — like us — then this will be a godsend for you.

Apple Pay On The Web

If you’re one of the lucky lot in Australia that has access to Apple Pay on their iOS or WatchOS gadget, then you’ll be pleased to know that same straightforward feature is coming to Safari. Any site that has an Apple Pay button displayed through the checkout process will let you begin the payment process on your Mac, authenticating it securely with your iPhone or Apple Watch.

iCloud For Desktop And Documents

If you’re the kind of disorganised soul that saves things willy-nilly to their desktop without choosing a folder for it, this is going to be very convenient. Any files saved to your Desktop or Documents folders will be automatically uploaded to your iCloud storage, and then accessible on any other MacOS or iOS device that you already use.
