Bought Matthew a box of Padron 85th Anni's one day because he had a couple and really like them. There are 8/10 sitting there, and I think we gave one away. Strong little so-and-so's and not with amazing flavor either.

Great gifts for someone you want to impress but you do not care about :devil2:

I feel honored then that you didn't offer me one :D

mmmm Kraft Dinner...haven't had that in years! Maybe more than a decade!

For the price of one 30-40$ Opus X, you can buy 784 boxes of Kraft Dinner...

OK, I had to actually Google that - Canadian term for Mac'N'Cheese :rotfl:

Not just any m&c... Boxed wonder food.

I am sure available down there too.

Different name, but same product. However, my wife won't let our daughter eat such stuff so I am cut off as well ;)

Even the "bargain" Opuses are too expensive. I like the Padron 1926's better. The problem is, they are hard to find. Opuses, Padron 1926's VSG's...they are all relatively hard to come by. These three are the only NC's I'll smoke. As far as the $30-$50 Opuses go, forget it!

I got tons of VSGs if you want to trade for some

Five years ago Opus had a different flavor profile. Today the ones I have aged for 2-3 years are 1 dimensional, strong leathery things, which confirms what most of you have posted.

I guess leather is still a theme, here is part of my tasting notes from a Opus #4 I smoked in 2007. "Getting into the second third the spice is calming down, leaving rich chocolate black cherry with a leather and tobacco finish, which is long and mellow"

Maybe they just need more time......but I still prefer a CC any day.

Short answer- no! Just as there are Cuban brands I smoke for a change of pace, I'll do the same with a NC. I'll take an $8 Tatuaje Noella over an Opus X. Even the Tatuaje costs MORE than a comparably sized Cuban cigar.

I will go for a Ashton VSG anytime if I am in the mood of NC's, Ashton VSG is always in my carrying case when i'm out for a smoke

I agree with this. VSG's are really nice; one-dimensional, but delicious. And not expensive; I think the churchill is like $10 or $12.

I happened to get my wish last night and found a lounge that had a Opus X. There were 2 petit lanceros left and for $20 bucks I thought it was worth a try so I grabbed one.

It was a beautiful stick and definitely one of my favorite bands. Great construction and a perfect draw which was a plus. I know I was expecting a lot from this cigar being that it's one of the most hyped on the net and maybe one of the priciest cigars you can purchase today. However, throughout the whole cigar I realized everyone in this thread was right. I enjoyed the cigar, at first it was a mix of vanilla and chocolate then some cedar and pepper. It definitely was a good change of pace cigar from smoking CC's, but nowhere near as flavorful. I noticed that the aroma coming off the cigar was a bit offensive as opposed to CC's which gives off a unique yet pleasant aroma as it burns. Also, one thing that I really didn't like about it was the nicotine kick that I got. I don't think I ever got a bad buzz from smoking CC's, even the bigger vitolas. This "petit lancero" kicked my butt towards the end and had me feeling dizzy. Not good.

Would I buy another one? For sure, I still enjoyed the cigar (minus the buzz) and would love to stock up on a few to age for 3-5 years. I would say it is one of the better NC's that I've had. All in all, I agree with everyone that these are NOT worth $30-40 price tags you see floating around the net.

They are very very strong cigars nicotine wise. For me, they are the polar opposite of a Cuban cigar. However, Fuente makes some other cigars that are marvelous and all of the ones listed below are cheaper than any of the Opus X cigars (except the first one listed)

1) Fuente Anejo line - All of them are brilliant. I believe Rob mentioned in a post from a year or so ago about how much he liked these. However, they are incredibly hard to find. Even harder to find then the Opus X IMHO. They can be around the same price point as an Opus, but I think are worth it. They are actually low in price if you look at the MSRP. The problem is that Fuente makes so few of them that they end up being resold at insane prices ($35-$70 a stick). I however lucked out and found a box of them at a local Binny's Beverage so I bought the entire box (I think I paid between 15 and 17 a stick. Well worth it at that price). They are smooth, and rich, and all around great. My favorite Fuentes line.

2) Fuente Hemmingway Line- Great cigar for my money. The natural wrapper is the one you will usually find. If you have a rare chance to have the maduro wrapper, grab some of those. They are even better.

3) Fuente Rosado line- these are under 6 a stick at my local B&M. Great smoke IMHO especially for the price.

Happy Smoking,

Mike

Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with Opus. Some have been among the best cigars I have ever smoked, and others have left me completely befuddled. I think what it comes down to is the sheer difficulty of growing the tobacco for the cigars, as the richness and depth of flavor can vary wildly year to year.

I see you enjoyed your first taste at Cigar Inn, go there often? I tend to stop by once every couple of weeks.PM me, maybe we can meet up sometime. I'd be glad to bring you an Opus with a bit of age on it so you can see how the hands of time affect the flavor.

It was actually my first time at Cigar Inn and it's a nice place to relax and even start random conversations lol. PM'ed you!

They are very consistent but they cost 3 times more over here

I'm still having a hard time trying to understand how these sticks all cost $30-40 each. Those of you that have tried them, are they at least as good as CC's of that price level such as the BHK's? Or is it purely just a marketing ploy with the help of supply and demand that yields those prices?

Those that tried them, are they worth it? Especially at almost double/triple the price of most excellent CC's...

$30-40 each? Where are you buying Opus X's?

I pay between $9 and $15, depending on the size, with the double coronas being $15.

IMO, they are not as good as fresh Casa Fuentes or Anejo Sharks, but pretty good in the smaller sizes- the Petit Lancero is a very good cigar. I find the larger ring gauges to be kind of bland, but with a strong nicotine kick at the end.

Supply and demand. My 0.02 - not in a million years are they worth the buck suggested.

Also sticking in another 0.02 - I cvan't understand what the fuss is about at all as they never did anything for me. Better NC's IMO like Padron 1926/1964 and Ashton VSG - but those too can be too pricey.

CCs all the way - gumme a boli any day of the week (and a bottle of bolly too)

How much are Opus X in the UK?

Padrons cost more for me than Opus X- the 85th Anniversary Padrons (so far the only one I've liked) are $20 for the smallest size. Ashton VSG are good in the smaller sizes after you let them rest for at least a year- they're harsh out of the box, but mellow out. I like the Ashton ESG fresh, but again, they're quite expensive- $17-19.

I won't pay $20 for a run-of-the-mill cigar- I'll make the effort and get CCs for that kind of money. But Opus X are nowhere near $35-40 and not even $20 here, so as a regular smoke that can be bought without a lot of effort (well until 1.5 years ago), I'd go for an Opus X for a NC.

I was looking online and the only sites that still had any were charging 30-40$. I suppose that's why they still had them in stock.

Just dumped all my Opus and Anejo stock, only thing I am hanging on to NC at this point are some Padron 1964 anny naddy/maddy and some Padron 1926 No. 1 naddys. I have completely lost my appetite for Opus/Anejo...still enjoying the Padron (for the time being)
