maverickdrinker Posted August 12, 2012 Author Posted August 12, 2012 I have said it before and will again, ignoring the expectations of what a Hoyo should taste like, the Hoyo EL was the best of teh 3 last year. Let's agree to disagree. Tried the hoyo multiple times now from different boxes as well as 1966s and the 1966 s beat them hands down IMHO. Different folks, different strokes.

maverickdrinker Posted August 12, 2012 Author Posted August 12, 2012 Very interesting read, this thread is. Cool to see so much different selection that people stock up on. Very cool!
jacktarnold Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Wow. These are some impressive collections. I'm lucky to have a box of anything let alone 4 or 5 boxes. Maybe someday after I'm rich.
ramon_cojones Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Agreed. But….I absolutely LOVE the RyJ Dukes. can't find any anymore…..for example. And thats a fairly recent limited production stick. We can't be friends any more LOL!! Have not had any ER that has made me say I need to stock up on these and ELs well those are terrible (sup piggy).

westg Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 I have said it before and will again, ignoring the expectations of what a Hoyo should taste like, the Hoyo EL was the best of teh 3 last year. I agree. Have had two boxs of 1966 and two boxs of RA extra both amazing . Right now however the EL Hoyos have been terrific and have prefered these over the other two.No one slap me please !!
IcedCanuck Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 I have said it before and will again, ignoring the expectations of what a Hoyo should taste like, the Hoyo EL was the best of teh 3 last year. I have a few boxes and I'm hoping they turn into something special over time. I smoked a Epi no.2 and the short pyramid back to back and noticed very little difference. For the price difference I'd rather get a box of Epi no.2.
cckandb24 Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 OK, so I have 4 boxes of Upmann Royal Robusto, and 4 boxes of RG Panetelas. Everything else 3 boxes or fewer. BTW, I don't know what Shlomo and you go on about - I found the HDM Short Hoyo Piramides terrible and not worthy of the HDM name Not even in the same universe as the RAE for me. I guess that's where the personal taste come into play. Can't even sell the box of extras I have( have tried on classified site) but found the HDMs much better. Would rather have a regular production box at half the price than either though.
cckandb24 Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Definitely go with the Royal Robusto have only been able acquire one box here. Would not swap your four boxs of RG panetelas for a box of HDM Piramides though. I would swap that. Don't you know Claus has the good stuff. I know some of those panatelas boxes have almost 10 years on them. Yummm
Orion21 Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Monte GE (8 and a partial) BRC(4) RACF (2 and 22/25)
Orion21 Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 It all comes down to individual taste. You love HdM EL and some hate them, they love RACF and you don't get it. Thank god for variety I personally can't comment on the HdM EL because I haven't smoked one yet... What I have found with the RACF is that the cigar has mellowed and rounded out significantly since it's release. It still has the nicotine kick, but it's not nausea inducing as Rob and Smithy experienced when first smoked. I reviewed is several months ago here: http://www.friendsofhabanos.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=110013
mk05 Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Can't even sell the box of extras I have I would assume that's because everyone has been stocking up on these.
maverickdrinker Posted August 13, 2012 Author Posted August 13, 2012 I'm a bit surprised at the RACF love too. Not even close to enjoyable for me. RASS or RAAS beats it 9 out of 10 times for me. And Art, if the HdM Short Hoyo had a Cohiba band, we all know you'd be slurping at the limited teat. If it had a cohiba band, it would be a different blend......
Orion21 Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Of course its individual taste. Good thing too. I haven't had a RACF in over a year, so maybe I'll give one another shot soon. Its just that these have been so widely available so as not to even be "limited" that I wonder how Cuba was able to roll so many boxes of a difficult size like that without causing big problems with quality. Maybe I just smoked young ones, or poorly constructed ones. Either way, the half dozen or so I have enjoyed have just been gobs of smoke (or lack thereof) and nothing else for me. Like I said though, I'll give 'em another shot soon. There were 4,000 boxes produced and I think the reason why they are still easy to get is that they were reviewed by Rob and others and found to be too strong to smoke. They have evolved beautifully and are really a very different cigar than they were 12-18 months ago. You also can't beat the shape -- how many EL/RE are that shape? The new UK RE, but that's it. Retaste and let me know what you think.
Lotusguy Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Monte GE (8 and a partial) BRC(4) RACF (2 and 22/25) BRC, huh? Curious about your reasons for stocking up on them. Are they a/t or the regular dress boxes? I've been toying with the idea of picking up a dress box. Any date codes that have been good for you? Thanks!
jrb5783 Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Ive got 4 boxes of HdM short piramides an I have found them to be great I smoked some RACF recently and I probably going to buy a box of those soon
