asmith Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Ken has been asking to do a review for ages on matching cigars with great champagne, so finally he has his chance with the head of Mumm champagne. Take it away Ken let your great interview skill loose.
geneticdrifter Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 LOL. Nothing like public speaking can bring fear to someone's face. Interesting piece though. I tend to like the more mineral bubbly with cigars. Seems to be a better compliment than the sweeter stuff.
jacktarnold Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Wow. I'm glad Kenny isn't in charge of all of the reviews! That reminds me of him and the H. Upmann HC with that was nice and fake pitching it away.
asmith Posted August 6, 2012 Author Posted August 6, 2012 You are up early mate I was just so keen to get this interview up, really gives an insight into the skill of interviewing
Orion21 Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Been doing this for a few years. Champagne is a criminally under-drunk wine. You can find very reasonably priced bottles that are very good (Prosecco, Asti etc) for $15-$25. Most Cuban cigars go really well with them all, especially the sweeter Italian Asti's
Puros Y Vino Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 I'm a big fan of bubbly with cigars. Especially aged cigars. The Champagne really helps to clean the palate and prepare it for the next draws. Subtle flavours are enhanced and never overpower the cigar and vice versa. Some winners. Pretty much any prosecco. Pol Roger, Bollinger Rose. One thing I've noticed, the finer the bubbles the better the pairing.
maverickdrinker Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Rose Champagne is one of my favorite drinks to have with a cigar. Just such a delicious pairing. Bollinger, Gosset, Billecart Salmon, Piper Hiedsieck... All good roses to have with stogies.
Ken Gargett Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 have you met smithy? he is that monumental tosser normally seen with a broom at czars. he told me i had 30 seconds. it went to about 1 min 20 before that crap of being harranged from the side by the two clowns - smithy loves keeping the thing on when he is not on camera. normally, if i go two seconds past, i get endless bile from him. on a more serious note, just done a piece - quite similar to the one here on matching cigars and champagne - for the fine group of mags. not difficult when you do not have an imbecile in control.
android Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Very nice job Kenny...ken can you put together a list of some of your fav's that appeal to you and cigars.
ned Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 have any of you tried the epernay line? it goes very nice with champagne
bolivr Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Very nice job Kenny...ken can you put together a list of some of your fav's that appeal to you and cigars. X2. would be very interested in seeing that

Prosecco and Asti are NOT champagne. Different grapes, different method of fermentation, different everything actually…
Orion21 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Prosecco and Asti are NOT champagne. Different grapes, different method of fermentation, different everything actually… Yes, I am very aware Champagne is it's own specific wine. However, there are many different sparklers out there for mush less $$$ that go really well with cigars. That was my main point. No need to spend $40 on a bottle of Moet or $120 for some Dom to try them together.

asmith Posted August 7, 2012 Author Posted August 7, 2012 No need to spend $40 on a bottle of Moet or $120 for some Dom to try them together. You got to love that Dom is only $120 in your country yet here in Oz it is $360 a bottle
Colt45 Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 have you met smithy? he is that monumental tosser normally seen with a broom at czars. Some day he'll have a real, live friend.
Ken Gargett Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Some day he'll have a real, live friend. they say money can buy anything.
Strada Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Yes, I am very aware Champagne is it's own specific wine. No need to spend $40 on a bottle of Moet or $120 for some Dom to try them together. I also agree with this. In Canada, Champagne is very expensive and forced me to try almost all sparkling available. There are lots of really really good alternatives.
LGC Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Great combo, but I usually drink sparkling wine, not champagne. There a lot of good options at good prices, as stated earlier. I love a cold, sparkling rosé on a warm day.
Colt45 Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 they say money can buy anything. Do you think he's named his broom? I'm thinking Pinocchio or Thor.....
Ken Gargett Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 Do you think he's named his broom? I'm thinking Pinocchio or Thor..... dropped by today. rob had relegated him to "downstairs" where he was whinging that everybody lied to him and no one loves him. who am i to disagree?
