I've got a birthday shindig coming up soon and a heap of my mates, most who have never had a cigar before want to buy one to smoke at my party.

I thought I'd gauge some opinions from experts on a good cheap cigar to start so my rookie mates can enjoy their first Cuban.

I don't know how anyone can characterize a PLPC as light - mine from 2011 will knock you on your a$$ :D

If they've never smoked before, they probably won't finish a stick so why waste a rather expensive cigar? Get some RG Panetelas Extra or PL Panetelas for around $3/pop - they are very tasty and quite light so your friends won't turn green and you won't turn red because they ditch it after 5 puffs.

My 2 cents, of course.

Plpc have a decent amount of flavor but I wouldn't rate any above a medium smoke plus they are cheap which was one of the criteria. I haven't had much success turning people onto smoking with very small light smokes. Generally people have come back with pc to robusto size and medium body as their first cigar.

Claus, why do we always have to fight on vacation :D

Yeah I was thinking exactly that, most won't finish it all so was going to go with something like RG or something like that. But I'm still open to other options

Quintero Panetelas, won't get much cheaper but was a great intro smoke for me, showed how good a cheapie can be and made me want to try the better marcas

Maybe get a 1966 and chop it up inot more managable sizes :D

Actually, I have some Quintero Nacionales from 2003 and they are quite nice, indeed - I shared a couple with some novice smokers while at our company sales meeting and they liked them a lot (and they didn't make them sick). :2thumbs:

Having introduced newbies to cigars, I would say go cheap! I smoked with a friend who took 3 puffs of a HdM PR he bought himself and placed down for the rest of the night. My choice would be Monte 5. Small, cheap and mild.

Mate, just get your boss to pick out a HQ box of Monte 4s, everyone knows the name montecristo, perfect size that wont intimidate the rookie smoker and hell, when on, its a great cigar.

Mate, I have done this before for my 26th and wasted good cigars on people who did not appreciate it.

For people who have never smoked a cigar before, assuming that they are all paying their own way, TUBOS.

Tubos are decent (if picked the correct one) quality, most are affordable, the newbies can try something they haven't before and have something to remember the night by.

They will never know the difference, unless they decide to follow the way of the leaf.

I will recommend:

Bolivar No. 3

H Upmann Coronas Junior

Montecristo Petit

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I completely agree that I shouldn't be getting them something big or expensive. Luckily they are all paying so I won't be out of pocket

Jase, though it was a good party, it was truly a horror seeing all those wonderful CoRos lying around barely smoked.

My recommendations for a nice affordable cigar, the HdM du Gourmet, H UPmann Petit Corona, or RASCC (if you think they will chuck it). But if you want to a show, go for the Culebras!

For my stag a few weeks back, the lads (mostly non BOTL) got into Monte 4's and Uppman PC's. Everyone pretty happy with the smokes, though the 4's were favoured unsuprisingly.
