ajgagnon Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 My local shop had a Rocky Patel evening this weekend and I ended up buying a box. Keep wondering why I do that (except to help out the local guy)... I think that will be the last. Anyway, my 3-day ribs are going on the barbie tonight so in a minute I won't feel so bad! Chipotle/Coke marinated, boiled 2 hrs, salted and soaked. Mmmm.
chr0nic Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Lol, I feel ya... I had two NC's left from my last trip to the USA- A Rocky Patel and some other one- which made a nice birthday present for an acquaintance of mine. If you're not going to smoke 'em, gift em' If the person knows nothing about cigars you'll look like the most generous bastard on Earth...
cigcars Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Hey, I got a Nish Patel "Thunder" and it truly wasn't bad...in fact, it was downright enjoyable!
Lotusguy Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 If you're not going to smoke 'em, gift em' If the person knows nothing about cigars you'll look like the most generous bastard on Earth... And if they do, they'll hate you forever
nikesupremedunk Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 yea...even mediocre cigars cost more than what i can buy CC's for. i buy one stick once in a blue moon if i really wanted to smoke in the b&m..
ajgagnon Posted July 23, 2012 Author Posted July 23, 2012 Yep. 'Bit better than retail, but still . Doesn't matter anyway, I'm cut off for a while to save for house stuff (moving, etc). Time to smoke a few of the ones I don't typically reach for and make room for the next round of Cubans (post-move).
thechenman Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Honestly...Not all RPs are bad. Still love the Vintage 1990 and the Sungrown is a pretty decent smoke as well. The original Decades were also a great smoke, but those have seriously gone downhill.
mk05 Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 The original Decades were also a great smoke, but those have seriously gone downhill. That's because he didn't make them.

Ryan, you told me that Rocky Patel was a hard to find cuban brand..
Jah Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 Stick with Davidoffs and Padrons, and you won't be disappointed.
chr0nic Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 Ryan, you told me that Rocky Patel was a hard to find cuban brand.. Oh yeh... about that... On another note, feeling pretty crook the past two days. Going to slam some Codral and still try and make the event tonight. I'll keep you posted
ned Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 Stick with Davidoffs and Padrons, and you won't be disappointed. or illusione, on par with the padron and better than davidoff
chand Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 or illusione, on par with the padron and better than davidoff Agree with the Illusione. To the OPs point I haven't met a Rocky yet that I could stand, much less enjoy.
Vcool Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 There are some not good NC's out there as has been mentioned, but to compare them to cubans is... not really the best comparison. I find it kind of like white wine vs. red wine. Both can be good depending on your personal taste, and are similar in some ways but tastes are generally different. Also, a box at canadian retail? I'm so sorry ....
demer Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 I smoke Padron 2000s all day they are cheap and get the job done. For when Im working or driving and can pay too much attention to the cigar nothing beats them.

For when Im working or driving and can pay too much attention to the cigar nothing beats them. I tried to like them but they are so bitter. I REALLY enjoyed a tatuaje unico and arturo fuente hemingway short story this weekend though. I guess the more expensive ones taste better than the crappy ones. However, I can't justify paying the same, if not more for NC's or DR's over CC's. Only exception is the Opus X, I really want to try one someday, but they cost more than say, BHK's!

Great cigars in my opinion. Lost City's are the only thing I've smoked with comparable depth and flavor to the CC I've tried (expensive), but I picked up a few Opus's for around 15 bucks a month ago.
Duxnutz Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 No love for the Rocky Patel Edge? One tasty, reasonably cheap NC and nice change of pace. Admit most of his other stuff is crap.
