I cringe when I hear someone use the term metrosexual which was likely thought up by some marketing student writing an article a long time ago it's not actually a word and has a made up meaning. Kind of embarrassing really.

Is it that particular label you don't like? Or do you not like any labels at all? What about hipster? Or head banger? Or yuppie? Or any other more modern term that's used to describe someone's style or behavior? I sure they didn't have those words 200 years ago. How old does a descriptor have to be in order to meet your approval? Most people know what metrosexual means. What would be a more acceptable term in your book?

Cheers,

I have to admit, I had to look up the word; I'd heard it used, but never knew what it meant. After reading the Wikipedia entry, I'm still not sure I understand the word. It doesn't seem to have any relation to the person's sexuality, but rather, it refers to a man who's excessively well-groomed, and very concerned about how he dresses. Sounds like 90% of the men in Italy. Is this the correct understanding of the word, and if so, is it derogatory? It does seem a bad descriptor, because for people like me who don't know the word, it sounds like it has something to do with one's sexuality.

I have to say that I do like a pedicure once in awhile. A foot massage, a little scrub a dub dub on the ol tootsies and feeling good afterwards.

I only get them in the winter. Beach volleyball is a natural exfoliant.

Ask yourself if the origin of those words follows the same criteria or arose from popular subcultures and I think you will have the answer.

I am really enjoying this thread by the way, those are deathly opposed to them have no real argument against them lol. I've never even got one before either, not yet at least.

My guess is that mens grooming and grooming products are becoming so mainstream that the term metrosexual will be irrelevant in another few years, if its not already so. Just look at whats on the shelves in your local drug store or wherever you buy your shaving cream/soap.

Oh my this thread has 5 pages already. I guess this topic really strikes a cord. I'm and eighties child. If I had the extra cash and time, why not get a pedi.

Agreed about it being a good thread and if you don't like metrosexual as a word then fine, say so, which you did. I'm never very hung up on the is it or isn't it a word thing. As far as I am concerned the only function of language is to be understood and plenty of "technically" non-words are well understood. My error would be in using it when people don't understand it, which most seem to have done!

cheers
