The Zplus single flame is more than enough. The duel can catch a unsuspecting finger half way up a Party Short.

Zippos dont count IMO

I always thought that was the down side of a soft flame, its not wind proof

You can blow on it as hard as you can and when you stop, the flame is still going. Fine in light breezes, but heavy winds make the flame dance a lot... but then you probably wouldn't be smoking, yes? Supposedly, Xikar has approval from TSA that it is not a jet flame, but I still had mine confiscated at Myrtle Beach airport... some bubba's brother is enjoying it on the golf course as we speak. Down side is I'm not crazy about Xikar's quality control, and mine, as well as a friend's, was problematic. Xikar does have lifetime warranty, My friend sent his back for a new one, but my brick and mortar just replaces them on the spot, which is pretty convenient.

Yep I have the regular z plus single flame and the soft flame, I'm not too keen on the double/triple/quad flame lighters

re wind proof, I think the most you can hope for is a 'wind resistant' soft flame, if there is even a hint of wind I grab a torch, less stress and hassle!

Zippos run on petrol/lighter fluid/naptha that is the nasty smell, pure butane is what cigar lighters run off

go to ebay and look for 'z plus insert' basically they are torch (one or two flame) and soft flame sinserts to replace the petrol lighter of your zippo, just take the lighter out of the zippo case like you would to refill it and pop the z plus insert in, they run on butane (both torch and soft) so zero smell or taste

they cost about $10 and last for years

I concur with this on both points. I am using my old cherished Zippo case from 1979 with an insert

+1 on this... I thought I was the only one. I used to use a Blazer PB-207 torch, but I lost it and that was the last time I spent decent coin on a lighter.

Nope. There's others here who can't smell or taste the difference, and use them frequently. More power to them. Use what suits yourself.

While I myself am the same as Stargazer, I generally refuse to use a Bic or Zippo (fluid) if there's other options available. The only place I've really had to break down and use a Bic occasionally was while in Cuba or a few other travel spots. I also prefer butane torch only, or good quality matches occasionally.

$5 pipe lighter from the tobacco shop down the street. Holds a ton of fuel. Never fails me.

Every lighter that I've spent more than $10 on has broken eventually. Every lighter that I spent less than $10 on still works today.

I've been a long time fan of Colibri. Now, years, and years ago, certain lines did suffer from quality control issues with some of the seals and gaskets. However, their warranty is stellar. You send in your lighter, they don't fix it and send it back, they send you a brand new lighter, or an upgraded one. I've sent in a couple over the years and within a week a brand new in the box lighter was in my mailbox.

That being said, I know the company changed hands a while back, and they have seemed to have solved any issues with the seals. I have a few that I use regularly for years and I love them, and have never had any problems with them. I have a soft flame one, but rarely use it. I like it though. Check these out, they are in your price range and can be found online or on ebay for even cheaper.

After reading this, I decided to order a Z plus insert (dual flame, I have a single flame lighter that I really like already). Hopefully I like it, and at the low price, it wouldn't kill me to order a single flame insert if I think the dual flame is overkill.

Colibri was actually my first quality/name-brand single-flame torch lighter. The "Ambiance" one, a lightweight plastic housing one, but in gloss black and chrome. I apparently got one of the original ones of that kind, before Colibri did the initial changing of hands and had the quality issues. I bought that one, back in 2005 or 2006, and was immediately worried, as all of the quality control issues were showing up in online posts. I think (but I'm not 100%), that the older/original Colibri stuff had the Colibri logo on the body of the lighter and then the Colibri name inside the flip-top lid of most lighters (I know it's like that for the Ambiance line, anyways). Then, the newer stuff that had the quality control crap had the Colibri name on the outside of the lighter body rather than the logo.

Anywho, I've found that mine, although scratched up and dented and more than well used, has been a stellar lighter and one of my best buys.

Aside from my Vector lighters, the Colibri stuff has been the best functioning. I'd definitely trust either of them if it came to a soft flame too.

I've kinda thought about it, but mine is functioning perfect. Aside from looking like it got run over by a tank, there's no issues at all with the operation of it. Lights every time, with no sputtering or anything. There's no real need for me to send it in, aside from cosmetic. Plus, I wouldn't want to risk sending it in, but to only have it replaced by a non-original-run one that maybe had quality control issues.

This Colibri, and the Vector tri-pump that I got from Cigarmony, have just been top notch. I've only had issues with my Xikar lighter (two different returns on the same line lighter). Great warranty service though.

Not to thread jack, but has anyone had amy experence with the black label flat flame lighters?
