investandprosper Posted May 22, 2012 Share Posted May 22, 2012 Keeping the theme of the Monte special happening right now, I thought I would review a fantastic Monte 5. This box is from May 2011, and has some of the darkest wrappers I've seen on Montecristos. It looks darker in person than it does in the photos. I paired it with a cup of Lion Gold coffee. Aroma at cold is very mild tobacco. These may need more time to sit to bring out their full potential. Construction is very nice; a neat triple cap and a packed foot. After clipping the cap, I am greeted with a perfect draw. Flavors of premium tobacco, with a hint of coffee bean come through on the cold draw. It's a little windy this morning, and I have to get the flame of my lighter a bit closer to the foot than I normally like in order to light the cigar. After toasting the foot, the first draw produces lots of dense white smoke. Classic Monte flavors come through, although with a metallic aftertaste which I attribute to the flame touching the foot of the cigar. After the initial metallic opening, the cigar settles into milk coffee with a touch of sweetness. It is very smooth, no harshness, with a perfect draw and plenty of thick, chewy smoke. The aroma is like french toast and coffee, absolutely stunning. The ash holds on until halfway before falling off. The second third brings more refinement, absolutely delicious on the palate with touches of dark chocolate and coffee bean on the retrohale. I'm taking my time with this little cigar to keep the smoke cool. It's a beautiful morning here, a great way to start the week. The ash holds on well into the final third, and the flavors pick up in intensity. Milk chocolate takes the stage, with the coffee bean undertones. A tinge of the metallic taste weaves through, which I attribute to a touch-up I made halfway through. Other than that, the flavors are everything I look for in a good Montecristo. A perfect cigar to start the morning, I smoked this little guy right down to the nub. I'd definitely recommend picking up a box of these from the Czar's special right now, I've never had a box of Monte 5s this good! 92/100, I would rate it a 95 if the metallic flavor hadn't crept in (probably my fault).
