CaptainQuintero Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 But how can anyone argue outside of Pele/Maradonna, period? The best players of the sport played everywhere in the world? It's the whole gene pool. Probably an age thing plus how long people have been open to sport in say, China. If you pick a random Chinese person off the street I would say they are far more likely to know who david beckham is than pele. Same with India.
mazolaman Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 We all know where the worlds best boxers come from. I watch them every Olympics, pretty much outclass all comers, yet they are not massive names worldwide.
typeapositive Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Carl Lewis should not be on the list. He was caught 3 times in `88 with dope in his blood.
CaptainQuintero Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Good point, any use of steroids or any performance enhancing drug utterly DQ's someone from ant 'greatest/best' list IMO. Cheating is cheating.
Yoruba Hacker Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Carl Lewis should not be on the list. He was caught 3 times in `88 with dope in his blood. Carl Lewis was found with levels of ephedrine and other substances found in cold medicines that were below the current standard. Inadvertant use. Non-issue then. Non issue now. This was late 80's which was the height of the drug culture on the circuit with the easiest testing to get around at the time (the mystery still remains how Ben Johnson got caught for taking a PED that was different than the one he was ACTUALLY taking). If he was wanting to dope and cheat, he'd be on other stuff than ephedrine.

Kind of a shame that the IOC has over ruled the British athletic governing bodies over their insistance that an athlete should be banned for life after being found doping. So drug cheats can serve their ban then go again.

Just makes an absolute joke of the Olympics, it's not as if thsi country is looking forward to the games anyway, but now the only thing this country is good at (Playing fair) is gone too! Am I coming off a bit bitter lol?
Yoruba Hacker Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Ben Johnson was/is Canadian. That should explain the mystery...lol And I have even taken ephedrine in the past. Not like I was exactly "doping"... As has anyone who has taken any of 90% of the cold medications on the shelf.

Am I coming off a bit bitter lol? the fact that we have a grub like nick darcy representing us is equally a disgrace. far as i am concerned, this sort of stuff, plus the doping, makes the olympics way too close to a joke. as i have said, if we have darcy in our team, i will happily cheer for anyone opposing our swimmers - even poms and kiwis.
Agricola Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 poor old warnie has rubbed a few people up the wrong way but i can just about guarantee that if you met the bloke, you'd walk away thinking what a great bloke, how could i have thought otherwise. he is the most amazingly charming bloke. and i have heard that from so many people. you think he is a loutish yobbo, and he does carry on like that at times, but he is not like that when you meet him. and i have heard the same thing from so many people. english mate bid on him for a net session for his son. warnie turned up an hour late, *** hanging out. my mate was so pissed he was about to walk away and tell him what he thought but for his son, he stayed. now he can't speak more highly of the bloke. warnie charmed him and his son, spent an extra hour or two with the son to make up for it and was just brilliant. another mate who worked with him quite closely was scared stiff one night as his wife, who detested warnie (but had not actually met him), was due to sit next to him at a dinner. he said that by the end of the night, it was all he could do to stop her dragging warnie under the table. liz hurley doesn't strike me as a genius but warnie has got to have something to get her. and he could bowl. I suppose it's the fact that I don't follow cricket and the way the media has chosen to portray him. Since Aussies have a certain stereotype over here (as I'm sure "pommes" do down under) one slip and he's pigeon holed for as long as they can keep him there. From the perspective of Mr Murdoch I'm sure that uncouth drunken chauvinist sells more papers than polite Australian gentleman. My apologies. He's certainly done no worse than Rooney or Giggs!
jazzbass Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 To NOT include Jesse Owens in the list is sinful. To show Hitler and the rest of the world that a black athlete can embarrass the Nazi theory that the Aryan race is superior in every way, was an accomplishment that will stand in the history books for generations to come.
CaptainQuintero Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Going to start digging my foxhole for the Jesse Owens discussion!
dizedean Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I am putting my vote in for Secretariat. An argument can be made to contest any of the athletes previously mentioned in one way or another. No one can deny this horse as the greatest racing horse of all time and a spectacular athlete and competitor. Still holds the Kentucky Derby record (39 years later) and the fastest 1 /12 mile of all time (Belmont '73). Unequaled before never been surpassed. The Greatest.

He's certainly done no worse than Rooney or Giggs! undoubtedly. and i think that warnie plays up the image and has made squillions from just that. as for stereotypes of our respective countries, whilst i might completely agree, best i don't comment. it has been taken badly on occasion. and i know bugger all about horse racing but i thought black caviar was supposed to be the greatest?
CaptainQuintero Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Know nothing about horse racing what so ever, the only famous horse I've ever heard of is Red Rum.
cookie_1978 Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 I think the best sportsman, certainly for his game and for sports in general, is Arnold Palmer. He put golf on the map in the 60's - and has always been a class guy. Plus he is a fellow Pittsburgher (Latrobe to be exact).
PeterG Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Archie Moore anybody? The greatest pound for pound boxer of all time.
