Does anybody have a homemade recipe for Wrapper Glue???

I got a RA Gigantes in the mail and there was a large tear in the wrapper at exactly the halfway point. It looks like the cigar was bent in transit and the wrapper just burst open under the stress.

Any help would be appreciated!

(Secondary......do you think this is a detail that should be brought to the Vendors attention? It is a large tear and the cigar is bent really bad.)

Thanks

I was in the same position about a year ago and found a good recipe if you don't want to pay the $10-$15 for a little bottle.

1) Go to your local grocer and buy a box of fruit pectin. My box was yellow with colored writing.

2) Measure out a tablespoon of the pectin and put it into a vessel that has no odor.

3) Using distilled water mix in 2 teaspoons of water.

4) Continue to add water until the solution becomes almost clear.

If the pectin solution is the right viscosity it should not drip from your stir stick. It should hold like a glue, but be almost clear. I applied using a small plastic coffee stir straw to the binder and a bit to the top of the wrapper and smoothed out the tobacco with my finger. You can also use wax paper. Hope this works for you -- it worked really well for me.

P.S. The cigars I repaired smoked really well and I tasted nothing out of the ordinary. They sat in my humidor for several months before I smoked them.

Thanks all for the tips on pectine, seems some cigars might be saved from a terrible fate!

Pectine is the way to go, or as a member has found here, arabic gum (sp?) is also a great solution.

As I don't encounter damaged wrappers often, I just spare the expense of getting wrapper glue/pectin/etc with my home-made remedy. Mash up one or two grains of cooked rice, add a tiny amount of water, work it into a thick starchy mixture on my fingers and apply it with a toothpick. Works with cooked pasta and cous cous as well. I normally smoke the rescued stick within a day or two after the home-made glue dries.

I like to put a bit of pectin with some hot water in a small container, mix it up and put in a microwave for ten or so seconds to help dissolve the pectin into a paste. a little goes a long way.
