Hello FOH.

I am thinking about joining the Grand Havana room in NYC. I read recently that there is a split-type of membership that I would like to find out more about but the first thing that I would need is a sponsor. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A friend of mine is a member and I have HERFed with him several times at the GHR in BH.

I have also considered membership, however be advised that you really need to be "in the know" to even be considered for membership. If you are not a friend of an existing memeber (which you might be) than I think you are drawing slim.

I think a typical sponsership comes from being a frequent guest of a memeber so if you are not a regular there (and attending regular events) already then it might be a tough road for you. I got that feel that this was a good old boys club, no outsiders welcomed or wanted.

Be advised that along with a steep membership fee you have a heafty monthly membership fee. This was a big turn-off for me.

I also think there is a waiting list in NY, not so sure about LA.

With all that being said I hope you have an "in". Good luck and keep us posted.

Also, what do you mean by "split-type"?

"Split-type" referes to the amount of humidor locker space. You are essentially splitting a locker with anothoer person. It also directly coorelates to lower membership dues.

 Hmm, ahhh - wonder if that means they get to help themselves to each others' prized stock w/out prior permission

I was thinking the same thing about the Beverly Hills location, I spend a lot of time in LA on business and can never find a place to smoke. Plus I hate normal, cramped, cigar "bars."

I however, never met anyone who was a member.

Try the J-Lounge or J-Bar, I forget which. But it is downtown and there is an outdoor "patio" that is cigar friendly.

Shoot me a PM next time you get to town

I'm intrigued. So I have to rich or know rich ppl to get in???

Both but dude, you're in HK. How much better can it get??? You have a "GHR" at the LCDH in Kowloon at the Westin.

It would be my dream to roll out of bed at Chungking Mansion and stumble down to LCDH for a tea and breakfest cigar and then head over to Ravi's place for lunch and anothor cigar. :perfect10:

aes9,

All GHRs have a waiting list. Although it sure helps, you don't need to be rich or wealthy to become a GHR member.

Well said my friend.

A good friend who I occasionally smoke with used to belong to BH but quit because he thought many of the members were a-holes. that pretty much turned me off from considering it; plus the fact that the interior is quite dated.

SethG: If you're looking for a place to smoke in LA, the Four Seasons in BH is a great option and you'll typically find a few people sitting out at the front patio bar/restaurant smoking cigars. Great people watching there too. Also, the 1912 Bar at the Beverly Hills Hotel can be good. Lastly, the Bel Air Hotel will be reopening Nov 1 and I imagine that they will bring back the outdoor bar for cigar smoking.

Thanks everyone. I understand that just getting a sponsor is in no way an 'in' but after I emailed them over there they said that that is the first necessary step.

I read online about a shared membership, but it could have been rumor. Anyway, thanks for your help everyone. And if anyone knows anyone that would be willing to sponsor me, give me a shout. Thanks :)
