laficion Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 The journey starts late afternoon on the 28th of August somewhere in Toronto Canada, where a bunch of cigar crazy disciples are getting ready to spend an evening with two special guests that have come over expressly for the event, our FOH Prez from the land of Oz, Rob Ayala and one of the best Cuban cigar rollers from La Habana, Senor Jaime"Hamlet"Paredes. Hamlet rolled more the 70 custom cigars for the evening, a Hamlet Robusto Extra with a shaggy foot and a pigtailed head. The evening was a real success, great foods, great drinks, laughter and a true sense of friendship & brotherhood, we all saw the photos thanks to the Toronto Brothers, BUT, But how was the Hamlet custom Robusto Extra ?? Humm, good question !! Well Thanks to one of the cigar crazy disciples, but also one of the major organizers of the event, Frank (Bundwallah),had generously sent me a couple of the Robustos and I would like to publicly thank Frank for his kind and unexpected gesture. I of course let the cigars rest from their long journey from Canada to France for a few weeks and today, since it was other warm & sunny day here with 28° C, I decided to smoke this beautiful cigar. Yes, truly a beautiful looking custom Robusto Extra with just the right oiliness on a smooth Colorado wrapper plus a great eye catching shaggy foot. After cutting the great looking pigtailed head, I took a few prelight draws on the cigar and found that the Robusto had a wonderful earthy taste with a salty touch on the lips. The draw was flawless. 1st third- After the few first puffs, I knew that I was about to embark on a long and delightful journey that was transporting me through the blue volute of smoke. The cigar started off on a light and airy note of spice and wet earthy moss with a light salty tingle and then woww, the hints of leather came rushing in like a traveller's vintage leather luggage that has that smell & shine acquired by use. I instinctively went to my old leather suitcase, that I've used for many years each time I travel, to get that smell and compare with the taste I was experiencing, Bingo !!! now I have the background for my journey. 2nd third- The salty hints have now evolved to a more creamy coffee tone. The leather is still dominate with just a dab of spice and all in a flavor profil well balanced , I'm cruising quiet well for the moment and the journey is not over yet. Last third- The Robusto has now taken me across the Atlantic and back to Cuba where only Cuban custom cigars are able to deliver that unique nuance of animal & coffee taste mixed with a creamy texture with so many hints of complex flavors from a fine medium cigar. The different leaves that are selected, the blends and the master rollers that create these works of art are the reasons why they are unique in the world of Habanos. Final comment : I smoked this Hamlet Robusto Extra to the nub. When I finally put the cigar to rest, I was transported back to my cigar room where later today I would surely come back to chose another Habano for tonight, but also, with a completely different journey.

LLC Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Great review and I agree the cigar is fantastic. I've only had one so far and I wonder what some age will do to this still young cigar.
IcedCanuck Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Awesome review and it was hands down by far the best cigar I have had all year.
Rushman Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Not only a great post and review, but the juxtaposition both verbally and photgraphically of the cigar and the old leather suitcase was truly unique. Thanks.

Orion21 Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 I enjoyed a Hamlet on my birthday last week. It was an experience to remember. Excellent post Guy. You made me smile.
Schumi5 Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 An excellent cigar and an appropriately elegant review! Thank you for allowing us to share your journey.
Puros Y Vino Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Guy! Great review! Great photos!! I love the use of suitcase to bring the "travel" motif to your review full circle. It was my pleasure to send those babies over. Hamlet truly rolls a great cigar.
maverickdrinker Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 great review. Hamlet is rolling some beauties this trip. Good tobacco and a great roller equals a cigar smoker's paradise. Glad that you enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
AlohaStyle Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Great review... like reading a great story! I was fortunate to meet Hamlet in Vancouver after he made his Toronto stop and I agree, that Robusto is an excellent cigar! Unfortunately the shop I went to only had a 2 cigar limit (I was able to get 2 Robustos and 1 Torpedo) and I gave one of mine away to another BOTL. I have the torpedo left but I'm afraid my expectations will be too high after smoking the Robusto!?! LOL
Stalebread Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Great write up and photos. Thanks for the thread, Guy. .
dicko Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 great review, thanks for sharing your story! I LOVE the look of shaggy foot cigars...
CanuckSARTech Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Art, are you still getting more of these? Is Hamlet still going to be doing some stuff in T.O.?
cottierm Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Thanks for this review and for the beautiful pictures. (I really love your old suitcase!). I've smoke two Hamlet's robustos when he was in Toronto and I had more or less the same feelings as the ones you describe. cottierm Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 Hi CanuckSARTech, The Toronto LCDH still had a few of Hamlet's robustos extra (at CAD$ 20) and torpedos (at CAD$ 25) for sale as of last week. Best, Michel Art, are you still getting more of these? Is Hamlet still going to be doing some stuff in T.O.?
CanuckSARTech Posted October 12, 2011 Posted October 12, 2011 If someone can grab / get some more for me, I'd be indebted. I'm stuck in the Halifax area for the next month - in transit right now.
