papatrips Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 I use a Palio, however I was gifted a punch recently by a buddy and it is working really well for larger ring gauges.
Nino Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 Never tried scissors...they intrigue me, but not sure they are worth the hassle. The major downside to them is the convenience factor, or lack of it. They are hard to carry around. I never used scissors before for mostly the same reasons, but I found these Xikar multitool scissors a few years back - and been using them since, they are foldable, easy to use, light, practical and sharp as hell : Use a wide array of cutters, scissors and punchers depending on the occasion and the cigars : Bought this Colibri cutter a few weeks ago and have been using it as an alternative to the Xikar cutters, I find it ergonomically better and the cut is first rate so far :
nikesupremedunk Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 Used to use the Cuban crafters for a while but didn't like how it would cut at a slant and would cause pinching on the head. Most of he time I prefer to use the punch on the bottom of my cheap torch.
hdryder Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 I have V-cutters, Scissors, Guilitin, Butterfly & punch cutters. I use my Xikar Butterfly cutter often but prefer my $4 rubber key chain punch cutter over all of them. I buy half a dozen @ a time and when they get dull or lost I grab another.
LGC Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 SAK most of the time... Palio when traveling light.
amosnaim Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 Palio cutter. perfect surgifal cuts everytime.
Puros Y Vino Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 I've been using my Credo 3 in 1 punch cutter a lot more these days. The guillotine I save for Torpedoes and Figurados only.
maverickdrinker Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 Exclusively a punch unless I am smoking a torpedo/figurado.
Rushman Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 Punch on everything (have two sizes) except the very small RG or piramides/belicosos which I rarely smoke --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.631737,-87.070714
TM-US Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 I use a punch for anything with a flat cap. If it needs to be opened up a little more, I use my flat xikar double-bladed cutter. Of course figurados and torpedoes I cut with the straight cutter.
LLC Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Most often a Xikar Xi3, occasionally a Credo 3 in 1 punch and for pyramids a V cut.
MoneyPit Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 I use multiple punches for different sized cigars, using the largest punch that will fit the cigar. I've never had an issue with tar build up. Only use a cutter for torpedoes.
theholmesmob Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 ...a palio cutter and a 6.5 x 5.5 casing as a punch which, to be honest, works a treat!
davidsan Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 I bought a pair of those Xikar Scissors a few weeks back and have been presently surprised how much I enjoy using it over the normal teardrop shape cutter I normally use.
Ralph78 Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 I have only used a cheep guillotine cutter or a cut throat razor ( before I knew better ). In saying this I would like to and am planning on purchasing some Davidoff scissors from my tobacconist this week.
Hoshneer Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Currently I use Xikar scissors. I love them and they seem to be a good all around cutter. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
audio1der Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 I find a nice sharp guillotine cutter allows me control to take a big chunk of cap, just the top seam, or even "circumcise" the top cap off, whichever works best for the cigar in my hand. (Palio FTMFW!)
Jszeto Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 Currently have a cheap guillotine cutter. Aiming to get a Xikar Xi3.
joshua84 Posted October 21, 2012 Posted October 21, 2012 At first bought a wenger pocket knife with a cigar cutter. Works fine but started experimenting with the v-cut. From my personal experience, cigars which I had v-cut smokes cooler and slower. Tried a punch before but somehow didn't like it. Aall I did was re-sharpen the knife blade that came with the pocket knife with a thinner edge and it cuts through the cap very well. Now, I just need two swipes and I get a v-cut. The reason why I didn't get a v-cutter is because I hate it when the cutter slowly becomes blunt and you can't sharpen it. With a knife, I can maintain the edge nicely any time whether by steeling or just a quick sharpening with my whetstone.
Blakes Posted October 21, 2012 Posted October 21, 2012 I used to use my palio on everything, then a friend lent me a punch. I much prefer how the cigar feels in my mouth when punched. I did have problems with larger ring guage cigars due to the fairly small diameter of the punch however i've since bought a Passatore Duo punch, exellent quality and has both a 7mm and 10mm punch. Perfect!
TheBaron Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 I'd only ever used a guillotine cutter until today (in fact 30 mins ago). Was having a bit of trouble of late with a bit of peeling at the head using my guillotine so decided to give a punch cutter a go. Must admit I'm loving the SLR Regio I tried it on. Draw is better than I imagined it would be and I'm finding it easier to isolate favors. Can't believe I'd never tried it before. Will have a crack with the punch on a few other cigars before making a solid judgement.
David67 Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 Double blade. Kinda surprised at how many people are using a guillotine. I find it pinches the cigar before cutting and occasionally ruins the wrapper at the head. I thought that guillotine cutters included double blade cutters. That's why I voted Guillotine as I use double blade.
