ezruss Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I like V-cutter because it makes a large enough cut and you do not have to cut the entire head off of the cigar as with a guillotine cutter.
Rushman Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I like a traditional snip for small rg, and either punch or v for large rg. I just got a super nice table top cutter that has two different sized v's and two sizes of traditional. I posted a pic in one of my reviews. It's nice but will whack your finger off in no time.
theholmesmob Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Recently purchased a Palio, works a treat and have been using an old cartridge (6.5mm x 55mm) as a punch on the smaller cigars, also works a treat.
jjdolphin Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 I use a Cuban Crafters guillotine cutter. It is working realy well so far. It feels heavy and solid in the hand even though it is not expensive. Used a punch a few times and kept ruining the cap of all the cigars. Either I do not know how to use the punch or the punch just stinks. I lean towards it being me. Next I will experiment with the Cuban Crafters scissors. Saw it on YouTube, so I will give it a go. They look a little funky though.
CohibaBehike Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 I have several cutters. I have 3 Xikar Xi, (two wood and one metal) and my favorite and most accurate is probably my wolf guillotine cutter which is made my xikar. Plastic and 20 bucks, however, I use it the best. I work at a cigar shop and have probably cut 10,000 + cigars with that cutter so I know it well and love it. It's not the nicest looking but it does the best job in my opinion. P.S. I make an extremely precise cut since I've cut so many, I'm the best cut in the east
Phillycyclocross Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 I like the guillotine style cutter the best. I feel it allows the most smoke to hit my pallet. Whereas the punch is akin to smoking through a straw. I have scissors but they are so bad I don't they could cut butter cleanly.
dcse Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Punch bought back in the nineties. V-cutter for the piramides.
JohnLeupp Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 I typically use a punch cut on the golf course at the bottom end of my torch. For all other uses, I have a Xicar XI, which I am very happy with. Great blades and delivers a clean cut. Cheers, JL
mk05 Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 i just use my fingers for most and a v cut if the cap is pushed in
bambam Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 $3 punch works great these days. Pinched my fingers way too many times with all sorts of cutters.
capnshazam Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Bought a Davidoff Zino double blade a long time ago I use that most of the time, but I have $3 dollar cutters thrown around in backpacks, coat pockets, etc. All work the same and just as good...and I don't get annoyed when I misplace the 3 dollar cutter like I do with the $50 cutter
riazp Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 well a little update from my last post...i'm now using a Xikar Xi cutter for 48 and under RG cigars and a punch cutter for anything over 49 RG, really firms up the draw on these cigars. ONce I get a triple punch in i might go to punch exclusively.
TexAg Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 I use a Xikar Xi cutter. It is the easiest way to cut a cigar. Every now and then I will punch one. Plus, you can't beat the Xikar warranty with a stick.
Tan1801 Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 I normally use a punch so I selected that as my preference. I like punches because of the consistent sizing. Doesn't take much off so you can always snip it again anyway. My actual preference would be a good V-Cut, but I don't have any decent v-cutters .
btrout Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Has anyone used a Shuriken Cutter which cuts slits in the head? I just picked one up fairly cheap at CI. What can I expect? Any secrets to getting it to work well? Bob
vanbellc Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 I use a Palio guillotine cutter. Great cut and it's also useful for holding your cigar when you don't have an ashtray!
Rushman Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 I prefer a punch on anything larger than say 48 ring gauge, and use a scissor type cutter for smaller and figurado shapes. I had a great retractable xikar scissor that i lost. I also keep a desktop beast around the shop more for show and tell - anything you can use to cut off parts of your body unexpectedly is cool - the v-cuts on this are very nice, although its overkill to use the snip cuts. Cant seem to upload the picture though.
Rushman Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Here is the desktop beast if you wanna lose some digits. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.631734,-87.070567
hebbe72 Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 I have a SIMMS guillotine that I picked up in a flyfishing shop in Nashville. I am extremely proud of this since I an eager flyfisher. Never seen it before or after my one and only trip to the US.
Drguano Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 I use a Xicar punch for all but the smallest sticks and a Xicar Xi cutter for figurados. The cutter makes me nervous for reasons that Shlomo might understand.
thechenman Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Giveaways cutters - I have tons of these in all different styles all over the place. They will do in a pinch, but they aren't great. Xikar Xi3 - this was my first cutter that was not a giveaway. Used to love it...now I rarely use it. Palio - Own 3 of these. I've probably used them the longest. I have to say my passion for them is on the decline The little plastic tabs on the slide keep bending on me which creates an irregular/inconsistent cut. Xikar Z3 - This is the cutter I've recently acquired and have been using the most. Swiss Army Triple Punch - I've used this on a number of occasions, but I've found I prefer the guillotine cut to the punch. Never tried scissors...they intrigue me, but not sure they are worth the hassle. The major downside to them is the convenience factor, or lack of it. They are hard to carry around.
winelover Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Ditto Schumi5 - palio or teeth (I can't quote a reply when accessing FOH from Blackberry.)
sighuber Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 I mostly use a Xicar but use a punch for 48-50 ring gauge sticks
BatFastard Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 For the most part I use my Palio. I also have a Xikar 007 punch and a Wolf V-cutter. The punch gets more use than the v-cutter.
