guilow Posted November 24, 2005 Posted November 24, 2005 After reading the tube thread here it got me wondering... Why do people like tubos? I've been serious into Cuban cigars for a year or so, but I have not yet tried a tubo. Why do people buy them, other than the convenience of a built in travel case? I know a bunch of guys that always buy the RyJ Churchill en tubo instead of without. I just don't understand the tube concept, and would like some enlightenment. I'm certainly willing to try them but I haven't found a reason to.
dragon Posted November 24, 2005 Posted November 24, 2005 Some people feel the cigars age better in the environment of a tubo, especially over long periods of time.
Loki Posted November 24, 2005 Posted November 24, 2005 » excellent for gifting....imho. Very true. My buddy gave out Sig VI AT for Chistmas, nice touch. And yes the tube is supposed to provide a good environment as long as it has not been opened. Too bad it doesn't provide temp control.
Bill Hayes Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 I buy the occasinal tube so I always have the tube to carry a single cigar to a night out. A siglo 6 tubos can carry a pyramid. Very handy.
waldo Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 Golfers, you could put a dog **** in a tube and they would smoke it.:-P
hazleem Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 I have a buddy that claims that everytime he leaves any cigar in the Sig VI tube for a couple of weeks, the wrappers turn out lush and oily... (sounds very magical to me!) Is that true, anyone had a similar experience before? -Haz-
^nsmoke Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 When your out bar hopping and fall down, you can hear you cigar fall out of your shirt pocket !

tmos Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 Convenience. Plus when the beetle bugs hatch they are contained.
Mel Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 Plus when the beetle bugs hatch they are contained.[/i] This may be the only good reason to spend money on a tube. I have found the tubes on my Bolivar CG to be thin and bend easily not affording much protection. I can not believe the wrappers will magically improve as Hazleem has heard. Will make a nice gift presentation, but I know they cost money and I would rather spend it on something else.
harwellplant Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 convenience in transporting. an a/t is great to toss in a coat or shirt pocket and head out on the town. chuck is conducting (or was, at one time) an experiment comparing long term ageing potential in tubes vs. other mediums. he may have a different opinion on the benefit of the tube. if i recall right, mrn comments on the tube possibly having much a similar affect as individual wines in the bottle, leading to a better, more perfected storage medium for long term ageing. i don't have my book in front of me, so i may be recalling another conversation or writing. the tubo certainly does impart a heightened cedar note on the initial palate.
El Presidente Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 I have seen some great Tubes and some bloody awfull ones. In the bad old days ( where a dress box was also available)the worst of the hand rolled cigars on a table ended up in tubes . This practice appeared to have ended around the year 2000. There is still tremendous inconsistency in hand rolled tubes within a box. There is little wrapper consistency. Having said that, some of the finest cigars of recent times have been tbed sock. Bolivar Churchill Tubos come to mind.

The experiment is still in the aging process. I have about a box worth of different normally non tubed Habanos that are now tubed in deep storage sleeping for another couple of years. That way, I can take a cigar and smoke it and compare it to the same cigar that has been stored inside a tube and see if the tube has made a difference in the taste. Chris was kind enough to send me a bunch of tubes to begin this experiment. Thanks again Chris.

Couple of years have tic by and was curious what your thoughts are on the cigars tucked away? Thanks Andy
Tampa1257 Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Andy, They are still sleeping, I'll take a look and see if any might be redy for a taste test and let you know. Tampa
kilroy Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I love tubes... I took a large tube humi with me this weekend and I wish I'd had a few tubed singles to take to the beach to keep the feet from getting squished!

Taino Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 every once in a while I buy a tube box of something, it's always handy to have a tube, to carry an extra cigar or give a cigar.

I have the opportunity to pick up some well aged Monarcas (dressed bx) at a great price but don't know if I'm better off with the AT with half the age?
