I don’t own or ever tired either of the 31’s. I believe, the Nacional came up for auction about 12-15 years ago. I have not seen the standard Noval 31. Tave1225
The 1963 has become the new 1931. Already difficult to find and when found, expensive.

Already difficult to find and when found, expensive. the 63 quinta was the first 63 i bought, partly because i loved it and partly as it was one of the very cheapest 63s at the time. one of my first ever serious tastings was across the 63 ports, thanks to some friends who had cellars full. when i studied in the UK late 80s, a mate asked if i'd go to sothebys to see that his sales went okay. he was shifting 50-60 cases of 63s. he'd done the sums and had more than he could drink (apparently when they were released, these guys were picking them up at about $5 a bottle so he bought truckloads) so cleared out some space. a few years ago, at a local auction, a 29 Taylors came up. i knew that Taylors never made a 29 so i checked with the auction house - originally established by a good mate of mine and i knew them well enough to ask. it was part of a number of ports that a client had been offloading. he was extremely reputable and even though none of these old bottles were ever labelled, every one was exactly what he had said it was, when the corked was removed. so i wondered if perhaps Taylors had made one and never released it commercially. so i checked with people i knew there and they confirmed that it had never been made. so then i thought that perhaps he had made an error and it was a 1927 which would have been sensational. so i had a crack and got it for around $400. a lot to pay for a bottle, but if i was right and it was the 27, a bargain. anyway, about 12 months later, i was doing a lunch for a couple of friends who'd opened some magic bottles for me. we had a corked krug and a corked something else - a richebourg i think. was very unhappy. anyway, we pulled the cork on the "mystery" and as it was one of those days where nothing was going right, i had little optimism. could not believe it when it came out. the 31 Quinta!! and it was truly spectacular. and a decent bargain given that at the time, the 31 was going for about five grand. Tave1225
Great story Ken. I can only imagine how amazing the 31 was, but I wouldn’t have complained if it turned out to be the Taylor 27.
