ChanceSchmerr Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Friends, My ship, HMCS Vancouver, has at last been given official orders. We sail soon for the Mediterranean sea, to replace HMCS Charlottetown as Canada's naval contribution to the UN/NATO operations off the coast of Libya. As you can well imagine, I am extremely excited - Deploying overseas on such a mission is the goal of nearly everyone in the Navy. It's what I've trained for and hoped for for years, and I can't believe I'm about to actually do it! Here's a news bit about what we are doing - http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2011/06...libya-nato.html I expect to be gone for over 6 months - but I should have internet access somewhat, so I will try to post on FOH if/when I can. At the very least I will email updates to Rob and Lisa when possible so that they can spread the word that i'm Ok. I also expect to get the chance to find cigars in Spain, France and Italy and elsewhere in the area - I will be searching for some specific REs (La Escepcion Italy RE, Sancho Panza Spain RE, etc). That said, I'm still bringing a good stash of CC's for smoking on my way over there! Also because military mail regulations prohibit any tobacco in mail going out to deployed ships - no special care packages from home for me! I am also trying to arrange a mid-deployment mini-vacation to Australia with my fiancee - Will post most details if I can make it happen! Would love to finally come meet the Czar crew and FOH Aussie brothers if I can make it happen! I'll try to take pictures as much as I can in port - but please remember that because of Security considerations, I won't be able to say much about what I'm doing, when I'm doing it. I WILL be sure to talk about any fine cigars I'll be smoking at sea! Wish me luck, everyone! Fair winds and Fine Cigars to you all!
shrink Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 That's really exciting, Chris. Thanks for posting the pix of the ship. It looks to be a fine vessel, and hopefully you guys will have some adventures. Good smoking, and good hunting!
lemmycaution Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Good luck and stay safe. Hopefully you'll be able to track down some great cigars

cigarmonologues Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Good luck. I certainly envy you. If you end up sidetracked in Plymouth having some Thursday War fun with our mob then I must inform you that I have the city's entire supply of quality cigars...
CanuckSARTech Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Chris, big kudos brother. I now am getting to the point where I understand your excitement and pleasure at the job ahead. Huge congrats. Hope to see/chat with you again soon, and will look you up to do another nice swap once you get back on maple-tinged land. Fair winds and happy sailing, brother. Cheers and best wishes.
bob25 Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Stay safe brother ! Hope you enjoy your stay out there.
tmac77 Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Great news for you Chris and a fantstic deployment. Those pictures bring back some fond memories of my navy days. Tom
PigFish Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 ... I was going to wish you luck until you said you will be searching for RE's.... -LOL Chris, my friend, and you are that, be safe and keep me posted. I too will be happy to forward some of your follies if you email me. Godspeed my friend, keep your head down and be safe. And thanks again for your service and what you do to keep your countrymen, and mine, free. God bless you matey! -Ray
riderpride Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 Best of luck man and take care. Sucks about the no 'care packages', but I'm sure you'll make out just fine.
adic88 Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 Sail safely! Are you allowed to smoke cigars onboard the ship?
tugboat Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 Try and keep her in one piece Chris and remember. The door they knock on when the **** hits the fan is going to be yours. Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of liberty. Thomas Jefferson
