Sawyer Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 I had to hit the rewind button to make sure I saw who I thought I saw... I did the same.
Scdalak Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 Suckling!!?? LMAO!! that was great.. I was kinda disapointed over all in the show, I am sure they had very tight restrictions on what they could do, but not even one trip to a LA casa or El lagito Factory??? BOOOOOO.... I thought it was great showing all the old ladies smoking massive cigars. Did anyone notice an old man on the street smoking a cigar with a Blue Band? Any guesses what it was??
bassman Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Anthony does shows about food, not cigars. The baseball guy was smoking cigars & Anthony did mention cigars at the beginning of the show. I thought it was very enjoyable.

I thought it was very enjoyable. Well, that show was mainly about Cuban baseball, not so much about food. He could have thrown a short segment about cigars in with as much time as he talked about baseball.

stogieokie Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 I enjoyed the show, but was disappointed as well that there wasn't really anything mentioned about cigars. The part about the guys gathering in the park--with permits nonetheless-- to argue baseball cracked me up! The food looked incredible!! Hopefully I'll get to experience it sometime soon.
KB24 Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 That was one of the worst episodes. I understand they were probably limited as someone mentioned earlier, but I don't give a **** about kid's baseball or even professional baseball. I wanted to see hotels, restaurants, bars, discos, resorts, factories etc... I was pumped to watch with my wife in order to help sell her on the idea of one day taking a trip there. Those plans are out the door! -Patrick
cigcars Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Have to confess I was a tad let down in that the whole show was about food and baseball. I know we were all looking forward to his coverage of at least the famous Partagas cigar factory
compitaveggie Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Cuba is a lot more than just cigars. Baseball is HUGE in Cuba. I believe he mentioned that the show was going to be about the Cuban people and what they do. Although they smoke cigars, they very rarely smoke Habanos and rarely go to LCDH's. I thought the show was really good. I watched it with my wife and it pumped us up for our 2nd trip to Havana in October. I think since we have such a love of cigars here on FOH, anything less than 59 minutes of the show focusing on cigars would have been a disapointment. My sister that is going to Cuba for the first time with us loved the show and is more excited to go now. If you want to watch one on that did have cigars included Andrew Zimmerman went to Cuba in 2009. Jose
riazp Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Off topic, Compitaveggie, glad to see you on FOH! did not knwo you were a member here!..back to topic yes baseball is HUGE in cuba, and i'm going to have to download this episode.
Scdalak Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 . Although they smoke cigars, they very rarely smoke Habanos and rarely go to LCDH's. Wow thats a very interesting point, do they roll and make thier own? Are there smaller stores/markets they can get them? All the quick shots of women and men smoking, they cigars looked custom, but I noticed an older man smoking a cigar with a Blue Band, no idea what it was.
tjhernandez34 Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Did anyone notice an old man on the street smoking a cigar with a Blue Band? Any guesses what it was?? Yeah it was an El Credito cigar, it's one of the peso cigars available in Cuba through their government run bodegas.

SamuraiJack Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 His show always does a good job of showing the imperfections (sometimes downright atrocities) of a place while still leaving me wanting to visit badly. Bourdain also has a way with words that far surpasses most dull/smiling/good-looking/failed-actor hosts in reality tv. Just saw this one, and I really felt they captured the enormous untapped potential of Cuba, wow. Pretty overwhelming when you think what that country could be. I call BS on the no-cigars-at-all, producers prolly not wanting to promote smoking, especially not illegal smoking.
brutusthebuckeye Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Overall it was a good show....i kinda figured he wouldnt spend to much time on cigars...... I will say they spent Waaaaaay to much time on James Sucksling......atleast we didnt have to hear his phony accent....

Ghabanos Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 this is now on youtube http://youtu.be/m8H979Mxgxc
Colt45 Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 Watched the show and enjoyed it for what it was. I thought it fairly typical for this show, and these type of shows in general - not overly in depth, kind of a snapshot, which is understandable given time constraints, etc. I think my favorite line was Roberto Salas: "the camera is one of the worst liars in the world".
kafreeman Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 I think my favorite line was Roberto Salas: "the camera is one of the worst liars in the world". That was the best line of the show... and something I had never thought about.
thechenman Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 For more information on the Suckling/Boudain encounter... Suckling/Bourdain n Cuba It appears that James blogged about the encounter.
MadMax Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 The best thing to happen to CA is when Suckling left!
