kiwicrusaders Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 I'm going to be travelling through Dubai in the next 2 weeks. Would like to get 1 or a pack of 3 sample pack of H. Upmann. My preference is thicker ring gauges ... so looking at Mangnum 46, Magnum 50 or Connosir Nr 1. Would be really interested in peoples opinions on which to try... given Im not sure what is going to be available in singles or packs of three and also that I want to be able to get a sense of the H. Upman taste profile. Thanks in advance.
Colt45 Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 If they have all you've listed, why not a single of each? I'd also consider adding the Sir Winston.
CaptainQuintero Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 mag 46 is my favourite, lot's of milk chocolate and rich buttery leather in those. I found the mag 48 to be just a spicer, smaller version of the 46 but without the chocolate. I would agree with colt RE the sir winston, stick one in for after a special day/meal
shrink Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 Get a sampler. If you can, grab some from 2008. This was a great year for Upmann's.
drake2k Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 Sir Winston is the best Upmann by far, but I' ve never seen them in three packs. maybe singles are available where you are. Mag 50 is a really nice cigar, and probably the size you're looking for.
tmac77 Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 If they have all you've listed, why not a single of each?I'd also consider adding the Sir Winston. +1 on Colt's reccomendation you should add the Sir Winnston to this list as is is arguably one of the best.
bc8436 Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Sir Winston, #2 and Mag. 46 are the best H. Upmanns in my opinion.
thechenman Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 I agree that the Sir Winston is a fantastic cigar. My preference would first be for the Magnum 50...followed by the Sir Winston, then the Magnum 46.
ksblazer Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Sir Winston and the No.2's are my favorites in the H. Upmann line up. As mentioned the 2008's are smoking very well right now.
Dbone Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 I do not have experience throughout much of the line, although I have really enjoyed the late '09 Mag 46's Rob picked. I have two at the moment, HQ for smoking, PSP for aging. Really good stuff
markmurase Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 I lived in the Middle East for a number of years and bought quite a few boxes from Dubai Airport Duty Fee before discovering Friends of Habanos. I found the Cuban cigars from Dubai were quite inconsistent. I'd get a bood box one trip and then a couple of poor ones the next trip, so it's a bit of a lottery The Dubai airport humidor doesn't have the best storage conditions (to much variation), but I guess there is big turnover so they get away with it. I also think you'll find the Dubai prices are not much cheaper than FOH USD prices. Anyway, if they're cheaper in Dubai it may be worth taking the risk. I'd go for something that has been relatively consistent of late, to give yourself the best chance. The H. Upmann Sir Winstons are great, if you like larger ring gauges, and seem to have been relatively consistent based on postings on this forum. However, I don't think you'll be able to buy singles in Dubai and even the choice of cigars in 3 packs is limited. Also, I think the manufacturers probably put the worst of their production in 3 packs. My feelings are that, unless the cigars are a lot cheaper in Dubai, I'd save my money and buy from Rob. You know Rob's stock has been hand-picked to discard the rubbish, and you can buy as many or as few as you like. I hope this helps and best of luck with your purchase.
