Just seen an article that the US will be placing graphic cancer photos and such on cigarette packs starting next year. I suppose when the govt starts regulating the cigar industry here, you will see the same ugly stickers on the beautiful cigar boxes just like in Oz. A sad state of affairs as the "government nanny state" is at work again telling us how to live our lives! :covermouth:

In the UK it seemed to shut up the PC brigade for good while, maybe 5 years or so? I think they felt mission had been accomplished and so went off to do something else, taking salt out of pork scratchings or something.

It's starting to rear it's head again though, there are moves for all tobacco to be banned from being on display, so cigarettes etc at your local store would have to be under the counter in a plain white box with no markings. For cigars, B&M windows would have to be blacked out like sex stores...

Has already happened in Canada, cigar stores can not display a sign saying "cigars" and you as a customer cannot walk into the humidor or touch the cigars. I see the same thing coming down the road here in the "land of the free", LOL.

I think the retailers and manufactures in the US have been paying attention as to what is transpiring abroad. They are positioning themselves well with an army of lobbyist. Look at the BS they are getting away with regarding the Cohiba name.

One of my local B&M has a monthly meeting with our Congressman. He comes into the store and fields questions from the customers.

For right now they are doing a good job at making sure the premium cigar market is kept separate and not lumped in with cigarettes.

The FDA is chompin at the bit to regulate premium cigars just like all other tobacco products.

Look at New York City and California if you want to see the future of cigars in America. No smoking in cigar lounges, no smoking in open spaces, taxes akin to Canada etc. The tobacco industry has been successfully neutered in the US since the 90's. Sadly, it's only a matter of time. Land of the "Free" indeed.

Why stop with cigarettes and cigars. How about warning labels on every bottle of wine showing the effects of cirrhosis on the liver.

I got a little wound up when the Federal Government (or Agency) who can't even pay their bills and keep their dinga-ling in their pants somehow have the right to tell me how I should live my life. I'll step down from my soap box for now.

To be honest, these pictures have been on cigarette boxes on here for years now, and they've had little to no effect, and now they are talking about making the pictures even bigger to cover about 75% of the cigarette pack. In the end, the cigarette smoker is probably already very much aware of the health hazards, bla bla bla, and will continue to buy the packs dispite the pictures and whatnot. If the person does not like the picture on the pack, they will just put their cigarettes in a little cigarette holder and throw the box away. IMO this is pretty pointless aproach.

What would be nice is for the manufacturers to put how much of the purchase price is tax on the product. Where I reside I think it is now $4.35/pack for cigs. Now i don't smoke them and really don't care much about them but that is ridiculous. All of our wizards of smart that think they know what is best for everyone would never allow that to happen though.

I refuse to lecture adults on what they want to do within their own realm, confines, personal life, etc. Yeah, we all know cigarettes are killers, particularly the ones with all the pesticide, ammonia, chemical compounds that make them MORE addictive, yet none of those cigarette executives are serving any prison time like the poor dimestore hood with no political influence (sorry for my own soapbox rant). Even so what's the point - whether it's dope, porn, sex, food, fast cars, soap operas...what about chat rooms??? Pick your cause. But, umh...leave people be.

Your Canadian government is even more oppresive than our's here in the US, but we are catching up to you in a hurry thanks to our Pres Obama and his nanny state government that feels it knows what is better for our lives than we do.

it's not a party issue in the usa... both parties love this crap... if there is anyone to get peeved at about all this it's Big Tobacco. they took artistry, culture, craftsmanship, tradition... chopped it up, covered it in chemicals, and shoved it into paper tubes.
