asmith Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Smithy, is that a Manfrotto tripod? No thats not the Manfrotto, I don't let the good Manfrotto equipment out of my site, so Rob and Ken only get to use the cheaper no name brand tripod.
headstand Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 I wonder how long before we see a member parody of a deck session?
duwan Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 I can taste different flavors in a cigar, but I have absolutely no idea what those flavors are. For example, I can taste fruit in a cigar, but I could not tell you what fruit it is. May be black cherry, may be nutmeg. Hell, I don't know. I only know if I like the cigar or not. I think my reviews would be pretty pointless if I said sometning like, " I taste something in this cigar, I have no friggen idea what the taste is, but it is pretty good."
OZCUBAN Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 I wonder how long before we see a member parody of a deck session? I have been thinking about that for ages
Warren Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 I think the equipment comes a distant second to the on camera characters. Smithy has hit the nail on the head when he says you need three idiots in front of the camera. The fun element is something that would be hard to convey with just one person. I have to agree that the written reviews are probably far more informative from the point of view of documenting details about the cigar that you can go back and reference. The videos make a compromise in that respect but where they excel in my opinion is to demonstrate how a good cigar is a fantastic companion to good friends, good conversation, and let's not forget good drink. I might be one of the occasional on screen idiots but I can tell you that off screen I am just the same. An idiot. I think it just comes naturally.
Maron76 Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 I wonder how long before we see a member parody of a deck session? I was thinking this as well. Any metro detroiters want to join me for a friendly spoof? I have the gear and even an elderly neighbor named Ken who talks in circles. Could be fun......
CDNeh Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 One of the biggest reasons is the time factor that a good review takes not only for the review but also the editing etc. I very much appreciate the time and effort for all those that do not only the video reviews but all the reviews that get posted. adic88 Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 I started video reviews because i found writing reviews all the time just became too much of a chore. Recording is easy, editing on a Mac even easier. Just drag, snip and export. Also, i found video reviews to be a great way to express nuances that writing can't. Such as facial expressions e.g. when i smoked a cigar that reeked of cat piss. It's entertaining, fun to record, and i hope fun to watch as well. As mentioned here earlier, the first reviews are always the hardest because there is a feeling of self-consciousness that is hard to shake. But after a while, it gets easier once you hardly think of the camera being there at all, and you're just talking to a mate. Imagine using Skype to describe the cigar you're having to a good friend on the other side, and do that with a video recording and you'll be fine.

dicko Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 I don't have the suitable technology and editing. otherwise i would do them.
Disburden Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Well, for starters I am incredibly lazy... Second, I don't own a camera for my computer or any other device that would do the job for editing.
Ken Gargett Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 I wonder how long before we see a member parody of a deck session? damn, they were meant to be parodies.
CBL Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 I voted "shyness" but it's more the fact that I HATE the sound of my own voice on any recording. I really love editing videos though and as an Advertising student I've edited many of my own and others' visual works. I might do a video without my own mug someday. Just cigar shots and written words. I actually have one in mind already that I might do over the summer. To the crew: You guys should make a DVD with a years worth of reviews on it, maybe an end of year review and some deleted scenes and extra's! They'd probably sell like hotcakes
frenchkiwi Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Other: I find that even reviewing a cigar, takes too much away from enjoying the cigar and just relaxing. So having to think about reviewing the cigar and worrying about making sure the light is right for the video and that the video is gonna turn out okay would just ruin the cigar for me. i second this man. + even with good software it takes ages to edit all the mindless waffle down to size. ask smithy. either that or ages spent planning what you gonna say. i've made the odd doco for tv and editing interviews can be excruciating unless the person has great flow. Finally why put an awkward (one person) long-winded video out there when a couple of paragraphs will communicate the info more efficiently and still allow for plenty creative stylistic license. Down with the tyranny of the image and that sort of thing! The pen (or keyboard) is mightier than the camera etc - said he who has put up the odd vid review ;-)
scinmyheart Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 hell, I don't even know how to upload pictures froim my camera onto the computer much less going beyond that
