Flew into Canberra yesterday (reason for being away from the forum) to meet with public servants enforced with advising the Minister on upcoming Tobacco plain packaging and internet legislation.

Nice people one and all just doing their job. However one is left in no doubt that anyone who enjoys a cigar is a misguided fool in need of government intervention. That irks me no end.

Under the terms of the proposed Internet legislation, FOH would be illegal. Don't worry, as I stated to them, I have no intention of complying and I look good in pastels...particularly orange.

The next 12 months will be interesting. I am in the mood for a fight.

Prez if the web site is offshore what kind of control do they imagine they would have on advertising?

This government is really getting quite pathetic. I can only imagine what kind of country we may have in

10 years time :o

Will still have Czar's on speed dial though :) or are they monitoring that aswell ;)

Time for a "Help Czars Stay Out Of Jail" sale! $1 out of every $100 will go to a special bail out fund! (limit of one per staff, just to limit potential abuse by Rob....)

Maybe it is time to consider an offshore storing facility.

It never ceases to amaze me of the amount of intervention the governmental dark forces attempt to push through legislation.

They basically think we are all misguided children that need to see the light.

If we as individuals demand that society foot the bills for our healthcare, is it not reasonable that society be able place restrictions on the lifestyles that those individuals can lead?

Rob-when you say "FOH will become illegal".......do you mean all aspects inc the forum?

The reason I ask is to see the level of control they are trying to exert.....

BTW...how many Churchills do you think you could smuggle in to prison?!

In seriousness,I find over here anyway, the government cannot do anything meaningfull anymore, they have no power to affect serious issues....so they create laws like "all shirts shall be fully ironed",just to look busy.

Dan,when will the governments limit rubbish food intake,or the internal combustion engine, both of which cause massive costs to health services?

I don't want society to foot the bill for my healthcare (or your healthcare for that matter). I pay for my healthcare myself, thank you.

Exactly, which is why they are currently going after the low hanging fruit, evil tobacco consumers. McDonald's and all the fast-food chains are in their cross-hairs as well for sure. The fundamental problem is that we gave them this power when we demanded that they pay for our healthcare. It's an implied power. I totally agree that banning alcohol or gas guzzling vehicles or "Fifteen and Pregnant" would be more helpful to society than banning tobacco use, but the masses would be in an uproar. Tobacco consumers, and cigar consumers in particular, are a small minority. It's a disgusting habit! (And oh so delicious when you get a great Bolivar Royal Corona from a box of robusto splits from the Czar.)

I told you to buy PCC! Now instead of working for you I will be sending bail money. Somehow Ken is to blame for this

I actually mostly agree with you except in a very particular case. Suppose you have a middle class family with one child. What if that child develops a life-threatening illness that is treatable (say 70% cure rate), but the cost of which will bankrupt the family. What is the best outcome for society? The child gets treated, survives, but the family is bankrupt? The child goes untreated and dies because the family can't afford it? Or society foots the bill and the child survives and the family isn't destitute? I tend to fall on the side of society should foot the bill for severe healthcare costs that are the result of nothing but bad luck. This is a great idea except when you realize that politicians have to decide what the definition of bad luck is. In short, we're f***ed either way. In that case, let me smoke my cigars.

Those patronising shiny-arsed pricks. They are so clueless that I am blown away by the scale of the job to turn this around.

Together we stand.

For what it is worth I have written to my local federal member to amend the bill so cigars are treated differently to cigarettes.
