DGuterman Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 So folks, I'm heading down to Playa Mujeres, Mexico next week, and have every intention of taking a good selection of cigars with me. I did this previously in a domestic trip to Boca, and had no issues with it in my carry on. Should I expect similar going to Mexico? Additionally, are there any shops in the area I should consider visiting during my stay?
Puros Y Vino Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I was in Playa Mujeres in early April at the Excellence. Great spot! Bringing your own cigars should not be an issue. That's what I did and avoided going off the resort in search of cigars. It's not any cheaper there plus it took away from what I had already paid for. Have a great time.
DGuterman Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 GTFO I'm going to the excellence also... PLEASE tell me more
cigcars Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 *There is a La Casa Del Habano in Merida, Mexico - I think it's in the southern part of the nation near the Yucatan.
Tarks Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Bring your own cigars. No issues there. Also, be sure to do a day trip to Isla Mujeres. A great, quaint island that is worth the trip. Rent a golf cart to tour around the small island. The east side of the island is spectacular with jaw dropping views and Mayan ruins.
Puros Y Vino Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 GTFOI'm going to the excellence also... PLEASE tell me more My pleasure. First off...eleven a la carte restaurants for dinner. You probably know this but if you're going for a week you will not get to all of them...so here are some thoughts. Indian restaurant they opened is new and it is a must. Simply magnificent. If you choose the Japanese restaurant, try to get into the teppanyaki rooms. Much better in there. The tapas restaurant is another winner. Great atmosphere and lots of selection. The steak and lobster houses are very good. I'd go for the lobster over it IMO. The Italian always pleases. The Spanish is very good. The French restaurant is hit and miss. Probably the nicest in terms of decor and detail but the food while excellent in quality did not do it for me. Good wine list but be prepared to pay more. At any restaurant some wines are included but one that isn't that you should try is Montevina Cab Sauv. It's Mexican in origin and it is quite impressive. Some waiters will sneak you a bottle if you get to know them. Its not on their included llsts but I think its a point of pride with them. The wine is quite good and memorable. Other things to know. Top shelf liquor. Find the Anejo Hornitos Tequila...smooth as silk. The Martini bar is awesome. By Kafe Cafe outdoor bar you'll find a cigar lounge. The lady in there is a sweetheart. The stock looks legit too. Though I did not partake in their goodies as I had a good selection with me. Weather was 30C everyday for us...surely hotter now. Beware of the sun there. It will mess you up if you don't respect it. Spa treatments. Try the water therapies at the very least. The staff is friendly and works very hard. If you tip them, you'll make their day. And there are some real characters there. Look for Victor by the steak/lobster place for breakfast or lunch. He's a riot. The beach and water is great. Be careful. Some sharp coral in the water..but not a lot of it. Order Mexican espresso. different but good. In room WifI is awesome. The 42 inch LDC tv is a nice touch too. The rooms are pretty much the same. Don't bother paying for upgrades. You're not going to spend that much time in your room. Well, that's it for now. If you have any questions PM me. I'll be glad to answer them. Have a great trip,.
melies Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 In Cancun there is one of the best LCDH of the world, you can't miss it! also they make a great mojito and you can even try the Edmundo Dantes Rum, one of the best one's. Also like Bundwallah said you just have to go to the Indian restaurant called Elefante it's just an experience to behold. For steak Harry's is awesome, and for lobster Lorenzillos is just awesome, you pick your live lobster and after that can smoke in the patio If you go to Playa del Carmen there is also a great LCDH there and a Casa Partagas (don't go to any other cigar store, they are all fakes) Cigcars, I'm sorry to tell you but they closed the LCDH in Merida have a great trip mate
CUBANO Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I was in Cancun a couple of weeks ago, and the LCDH is at the Hotel Zone at KM 12.7 is a great place to visit. The bus will cost you 85 cents US. David will treat you well, and you can smoke your cigar on the patio outside overlooking the back Lake.

DGuterman Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 I'm shocked to hear about Mercer, thank goodness for the czar!
First Lady Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 I am very jealous... seen photo's of this resort and it looks stunning I was photo's and lots
sblevit Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 I'm shocked to hear about Mercer, thank goodness for the czar! There's a long thread on CA about this that suggests that Mercer lost it's ability to source Habanos due to Drew's aggressive customs business.

cognacscotchcigars Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 I am flying into Cancun next week and staying at the El Dorado Royal Resort. I plan on taking CCs with me. Will they get taken by customs, how should I pack them, etc...? Thanks in advance for the responses.
Puros Y Vino Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 I am flying into Cancun next week and staying at the El Dorado Royal Resort. I plan on taking CCs with me. Will they get taken by customs, how should I pack them, etc...? Thanks in advance for the responses. That's a great resort too. Been there a handful of times. Since you're in the US, your greatest risk is exiting the US with CC's. Upon arrival in Mexico, they won't care. I bring CC's down to Mexico every time I go but I'm from Canada. No issues there. If you're taking the chance, pack them in a travel humidor and put it in your checked in baggage. The resort sells cigars in their boutiques but steer clear. They are 100% fake. There are plenty of places to enjoy a cigar there. But dont expect to eat and smoke at the same time unless you're seated outside. It's a big resort with a lot of quiet spots.
Stanislaw Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Wow, we're all heading south of the border these days..... Ill be in cancun later this week actually and my plan is to load my xikar caddy with CC's and simply remove the bands so customs won't harass me..... I know what I'm smoking so I don't need the bands as much as I need mojito and cigar on the beach....

AlohaStyle Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 As of last November, you could only bring 25 cigars into Mexico duty free... more than that you have to pay taxes. Of course just like anywhere you could get through without being checked/taxed, but that's the law. And don't worry about leaving the US with CC's. Really the only thing you have to consider is coming back with any leftover CC's. If you don't smoke them all, you could either throw away the bands or take your chances.

Trust me, I've paid aduana several times for one or two boxes over when I being NC's back for our shop. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=19.307733,-81.379097

CUBANO Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Just got back from Cancun yesterday. Got some CC's from Caridad at the LCDH on Kilometer 12.5, if you go there ask David to show you the Coke trick. Take off the bands on the way there and back, and you will not have any problems, this is my 4th time doing it. HAVE FUN.
