*A rare acknowledgement, Bob - and Thank You! I'm also looking at more & more media outlets here in the States finding themselves forced to have to acknowledge the same unfortunate reason for all the assinine, 3 year old, thumbsucking, dim-witted, cheap shot attacks against our President...all because he stayed in the oven too long. When Bill Clinton was in office he too took a whole lot unnecessary attacks and put downs. And his greatest condemners (of his extra-marital affairs) were just as guilty, if not more so, than he was. Talk about "talking out of both sides of one's mouth"! However, hope springs eternal for me. I'll never stop hoping and praying for the best for all concerned :(

I'm really going to vomit.

Maybe I'm getting too thin skinned these days.........

Ladies and gentlemen, please remember that though unwritten, we do have a rule against the discussion of U.S. politics.

Please, let's all keep the discussion on point.

Thanks.

The end of the embargo would definitely be great for Cuba .... I just hope the price off CCs don't and spending a week at an all inclusive Cuban resort don't go up as result but I'm sure they will.

*Well, once a major turn of historical events (such as this one) happens, there will always be transitional occurances that will probably take about six months to just a little under a year to iron out. There will be over charges at the hotels; there will be a spike in fake habanos for tourists, I'm sure many little income grabbing attempts by enterprising so & so's will be the order of the day. When that time period dies down, and when many more people become educated on their authenticity checks and so on, there will be an evening out of all the above to ordinary regularity. My 2 cents.

I reiterate Colt's point. How on earth you people can turn a post about lifting the embargo into a bashing contest of left and right is beyond me.

Let me make some obvious points.

1. America has plenty of racists. Why? BECAUSE EVERY COUNTRY HAS PLENTY OF RACISTS. However it is the cheapest of shots to pull a race card on anyone who does not like him. It may apply to many but it will dishonour may more.

2. Bill Clinton was no martyred saint. He is a liar. Here is a tip....he is a POLITICIAN. They all Lie. Don't lose any sleep over any one of them.

As an outsider looking in, I wonder how much of a correlation there is between the insatiable appetite of so many US brethren to tear themselves apart and the collapse of the industry/economy over the past 12 years. It certainly wasn't always like this. There was always left and right but widespread white hot hate is a something I have only seen since the late 90's.

It is this hate why US political discussion is not permitted here.

There is an element in the U.S. for whom no amount of belicose militarism, no degree of corporate toe-sucking, no quantum of mollifying compromise will ever be enough to mitigate his one glaring, obvious character flaw, to-wit: the color of his skin.

Some examples: he was criticized shrilly for bowing to the Japanese emperor, even though there was footage of George W. Bush kissing on the King of Saudi Arabia; he was vilified for being acquanited with William Ayers even though it is undeniable that George W. Bush was a close personal friend of the Bin Laden family; he's been denounced as a "socialist" even though he pushed through an extension of the Bush tax cuts for the extremely rich; right-wingers routinely portray him and his lovely wife as an ape, even going so far as to use the disgusting N-word epithet; the Secret Service reports that threats on the President's life have gone to unprecedented levels since Obama's inauguration; the so-called "tea party" routinely refers to taking "their" country back, with numerous references to firearm-based violence.

Taken together, Chaki, President Obama will never have "enough credentials" to satisfy the old un-reconstructed Confederates who exist in far greater numbers than anyone not living here can ever fully comprehend. If he gave away free money to millionaires (oh, wait! He DID that!), they'd still call him "an anti-colonial Kenyan socialist with a deep-seated hatred of white people" (See Glenn Beck, Newt Gingrich. Rush Limbaugh, et al).

What this means is that even his most well-intended, benign policy decisions are subjected to withering scorn and race-based hatred. The same impulses would apply to any decision to relax the (amazingly stupid) Cuban embargo, which decision would be worsened exponentially by the wildly radical Cuban ex-pat community in Florida, a state he badly needs in order to be re-elected, which is the single goal of any U.S. president who has been elected the first time.

so if US politics is back on the table, i assume i can post on whales and religion again?

ray, i was going to include guns but then i remembered our skirt-wearing, bleeding heart sook of a prez already allows that, because he is scraed stiff 3/4s of his membership would bugger off if he didn't.

remember ray, whales don't smoke.

and religion is out because he is too scared he'll be on my balcony where the big lightning bolt strikes non-believers.

I'd love to comment on BobKincaid's post, but I don't want to see this de-evolve any further. Let's stick to the topic:

Anyway, I wonder why the US doesn't recognize that an end to the embargo would be the biggest blow to Cuban socialism. The US has created the conditions for being seen as aggressors by Cuba, and the political reality in Cuba is probably such that without the imperialist face of the US, it would be harder to keep the people motivated in solidarity for internal values and against external 'aggressors'.

The US does recognize this. It's not that we're idiots ... it's much worse. We're cowards. The only reason the embargo hasn't been lifted yet is because there hasn't been a President with the balls to do it (because it's political suicide). It's politics, pure and simple ... and pathetic.

*Note: Use of the term "balls" is metaphorical and in no means implies preclusion of a female President. Likewise, the color of the aformentioned "balls" are not relevant.

Mate for a while I was thinking that Rob's cheese had slid off his cracker, but now that you tell me this I am begiinning to think he is sensible again!!! :) Just kidding of course!

While I don't challenge you on the whales thing, I just like to tease you some over it, I would not say whales don't smoke! There are probably a few pictures around here with one (me) and a cigar!!!!

While I like to discuss guns as one of my hobbies, having the political discussion of them banned would not hurt my feelings. I typically only respond when I see a point (that I disagree with) go unanswered. I mean I would not want to see the fishing threads go because some animal rights vegan members protested them. We all give and take a little. I have articles regarding guns and gun rights come to my email everyday. It is an interest of mine. But this is not a gun forum. If I see something of broad interest I guess it is nice knowing that I may post it, but knowing that it will cause a **** storm I just don't.

I have to agree with Rob about the insults. I try to read past them but I get a little tired of seeing my beliefs kicked around at times and it does rile me up enough that I speak up sometimes. For years I never said anything political on this forum but got a little tired of seeing what I considered to be erroneous points go unchallenged. I am less amiable about it these days I guess. In conclusion it really is better to let the mods do their job, albeit unpleasant, report the post and move on. -R

My aplogies to all for transgressing the unwritten rule. I'll abide by it in the future. It was my intent to show WHY, based upon a previous comment upthread, the likelihood of real reform/repeal of the embargo remains highly unlikely. Again, I apologize.

El Pres, in answer to your question, please let me proffer an answer devoid of politics: two factors contributed to the elevation of the "white hot hate" outside of the present issues, namely the elimination of the Fairness Doctrine under Reagan and the passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, signed into law by Clinton. Those two things allowed unfettered bias to enter the broadcast sphere in the case of the former and the consolidation of media ownership into a very few corporate hands in the case of the latter. The two created a toxic brew that to date has proven irremediable.

WOW, there have been some great comments/analysis here. While I certainly don't agree with all, I do appreciate how open everyone has been with their view.

It is too bad that we have to have this discussion by lobbing electrons at each other. Now if only we could reconvene this conversation on the Czar deck (Ken's is much too small and infested :) ) with cigars and drinks---that would be GLORIOUS!

Good idea! I'll second that and will bring the rum

I reiterate Colt's point. How on earth you people can turn a post about lifting the embargo into a bashing contest of left and right is beyond me.

My apologies Prez
