Just wondering if anyone has tried this before? I only recently heard about it and managed to get my hands on a bottle. Only one place in the entire UK stocks it! Bottle is rough as hell, huge air bubbles in the glass, the neck is twisted and has a knuckle sticking into the flow, the cork doesnt fit airtight due to the shape (lack of) of the hole. It looks as if the thing was made by 1940's soviet methods (it may be so). But the taste is like no other brandy I have tried, intense caramel and very smooth. I read recently that after a blind tasting by top makers in Cognac (the region) they awarded it the honour of letting Armenian Brandy call itself 'cognac'.

Tried it. Many times... It's called cognac in Russian, and it's not bad! The main one is Ararat, and it's cheap as p!ss. You can even drink it with coke.

Armenia has a pretty good reputation for cognac in the former Soviet Union. Obviously, it's lighter on the pocket than the French stuff, and the quality is reasonably good.

I'd recommend you try some Georgian wine also. Surprisingly nice.

Yeah that's the make I managed to get. Pretty luckily I think! It is about 70% of the price of all other brandies here too.

Is the Georgian wine a fortified wine? From what I've read of the region it seems the grapes are similar through the Armenian style brandy and the wines?

For Georgian wine, depends on the price. The cheap stuff tends to be rubbish, and very sweet. Slightly more expensive and you'll really enjoy it! It's not fortified, just normal dry wine. And again, it's 1/5th of the price of any other wine on the market here. Actually, one of the best whites I've had was Georgian... was at a wedding in Belarus of all places :D

There's some half decent stuff coming out of Moldova these days too. Slight improvement on rocket fuel, but excellent for novice wine drinkers and those just wanting to get spastic. :)

Funny, I'm Armenian and I can't stand the stuff. Then again I'm a Scotch guy. I have sat down with some serious brandy drinkers and served them some Armenian stuff and they like it. From what I understand they've employed a lot of French people that worked in the same industry in France. I'm not a huge fan of brandy but the best Armenian brandy I've had is Nairi. It goes for about $70 a bottle in stores near me. Here's a link, I suggest you try it out.

I like brandy and coke, something about it just hits all the right spots for me but the Armenian brandy is now my 'go to' brandy by a long way. I'm goin to go try and find the Georgian wine, say what you want about the EU it's made alcohol a lot more interesting!

If your looking for a cheaper alternative to cognac, id skip armenian amd go straight to Spanish Brandy. Torres 10 is a great starting point. Its only 20 USD here, and blows any of the entry level cognacs out of the water.

Ararat is the only one I tried too. It sucked. Spanish brandy like Torres 10 or Torres 20 are way better cheaper alternatives to cognac IMHO
