I have been using Double Edge Razor blades lately, but they are not that portable...sharp, yes!!! Anyway, I was thinking of an ST Dupont Maxijet to go with my lighter, but would like your opinion. Overall, I have busted most of the guillotine types, and am not a big fan of my Xixar. Would like something that will last... Thanks in advance...

sansei Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 I would recommend a Palio or a Wenger SAK. Palio is made of a durable composite material, not cheap plastic. They carry a lifetime replacement warranty. I like the Wenger for its ability to make super thin cuts, like when you need to recut during a smoke. I wholeheartedly recommend starting your search at Cigarmony, whose proprietor Mark is a member of FoH.

gr8tdanz Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 I love my Xikar Xi. I've been using the same one for nearly a year and it still cuts the same. The Palio's look cool, not a bad price either. The Palio advantage to me would be the finger holes. Seems like it would give you more control over the Xikar. If you stick with a premium brand, you should be fine.
Cohiba Stevie Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 Palios are rubbish! I have the so called 'carbon fibre' one and its literally cheap printed plastic. It weighs absolutley nothing, and has no spring mechanism. I like a spring mechanism and a bit of weight as it gives a more controlled cut, the absence of these on the palio makes using it to cut smaller ring guages a nightmare. Sharpness is also an issue, if i were you i would forget the online hooplah about palio cutters. The maxijet cutters on the other hand are superb.

bc8436 Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 I have both a Palio and a couple of Xikars, the ZX Ultra Slim and Xi3. Palio - Decent cutter with a reasonable price tag, I got mine for $30. It's light, and I like the built-in cigar rest so it has become my 'carry' cutter. However, I do struggle cutting cigars with smaller ringer gauges as well. ZX Ultra Slim - Not sharp enough, and mine is already all scratched up. It feels somewhat flimsy and I've never really been able to get a good cut with it. It's a gift though, so I keep it around. Xi3 - This has been the most consistent cutter for me. It's sharp and works well with all cigars, but a bit hefty so I tend to use it at home only. You should head to a B&M that has a wide variety of cutters and see what you like. Something that looks appealing online may not interest you anymore once you handle it in person.

When you line the cap of the cigar up in the palio cutter, you have to position it spot on to compensate for the thickness of the two blades, alot of people who use double guillotine cutters dont do this and end up taking too much cap off. The margin for error on a small ring gauge cigar makes the palio near impossible to use. I tried cutting a bolivar no. 3 tubo with my palio the other day and i completley decapitated it. Left the stick unsmokable.

Left the stick unsmokable. I have better success if I squeeze two fingers (middle & index) inside one of the finger holes, and put my index finger on the finger rest. It allows for a much more stable cut. Also, the blades are quite sharp but nothing like the "ONE BLADE TO RULE THEM ALL" some people on the Internet would like you to believe.

Left the stick unsmokable. On really thin cigars, I just line up the cap and apply a little pressure, then twist a little to slice off only the cap. Kinda like how Rob uses his finger nails to serrate the cap, but much more cleanly and hygenically!!

That way I have something for on the table and I can keep my Palio in my bag for on the road smoking moments. Also with the increasing ring gauges coming out lately, my Palio is becoming useless

thechenman Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 I have both the Palio (actually a few of them) and the Xikar Xi3. I like the look of the Xikar and it's heft. By appearnace it looks to be quality. But for functionaility and ease of use, I would go with the Palio. It truly is a great cutter. I have not had the opporunity to use the Maxijet cutter, but I know they are heft, and therefore not ideal for carrying around.
