cigarroverzulu Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 Anyone here a fan of the Sub,GMT,or Explorer? I was getting ready to buy a Sub.16610 but the economy started to slide south. Hopefully in the next year or so I'll get an older one. I like the older sports watches better. There are some awesome vintage watches out there. These watches look new, they could be 25 years old. Apparently a good investment also.
bc8436 Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 I have a Sea Dweller. Currently wearing it with a nato strap. Love it.
cigarroverzulu Posted April 27, 2011 Author Posted April 27, 2011 I have a Sea Dweller. Currently wearing it with a nato strap. Love it. The Nato straps are pretty cool, you can change the look of the watch altogether. The Subs and GMTs look right on a Nato. Also they can down play your watch so it does'nt stand out as much.
OZCUBAN Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 Hi cigarroverzulu Seriously you cannot go past Oris for a bloody good value money for watch ,with a bullet proof movement to boot Cheers OZ P.S i would have an Omega over a rolex any day (no offence ) Here are mine
cigarroverzulu Posted April 27, 2011 Author Posted April 27, 2011 Oz Cuban Those are some good looking watches. A buddy was telling me about the Oris watches. I dont knew that they have a big following in the States as other places. They seem to have a good following on this forum.
OZCUBAN Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Thats because Rob runs a Oris A/Dealership called friends of Oris suggest you check it out it is a wealth of info and good times not dissimilar to here OZ
coneatty Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I have a ss submariner I bought in 1977. It spent the last decade in our kitchen drawer until my wife pulled it out and took it to the jewelry store to get it fixed for my birthday. it cost 3 times the purchase price to get it back. It is still a minute slow a day. Next time...it stays in the drawer.
Rogers72 Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 My Omega Seamaster never leaves my wrist. When i purchased it, I looked at the Rolex models that you speak of but most of what I researched on Rolex in general was negative. Unreliable movements, lost time, etc. I found that Omega, Oris, and others had a much better reputation. That and Sub-style rolexes and their twins (lots of fakes) seem to be on every other wrist that I see. Omega/Oris/Others seem to have more styles to choose from as well and they are more innovative in design. Just my two cents.
SCgarman Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I own a 1997 Rolex 2 tone Submariner, wear it everyday and LOVE it!!! I am 44 and bought it new and will wear it till the day I die in which it will be passed down to my daughter. I am a total Rolex enthusiast.

I wear it every day and It keeps very good time. So what if it loses a minute per month or so. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Josie67... don't get me wrong..the watch is great and is on my wrist as I type...By the way, my wife only got mine repaired...yours gave you a new one. Obviously, you must be doing something better than I.
SCgarman Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 If your watch is losing a minute a day after an overhaul I would question the quality of the work of the watchmaker. Since I have owned mine, I have had the movement overhauled twice, once by Rolex and once by a company called QualityTyme, who is an independent Rolex watch repair company that uses genuine Rolex parts. My watch doesn't even lose a minute a month, it is really on the money as far as accuracy for a mechanical movement. In fact, the watch is more accurate now than it was when I bought it brand new- it was a bit fast when new!

gmoney Posted April 30, 2011 Posted April 30, 2011 Ok....You guys have me eyeing an Omega now...... That's $3,000 I could spend on cigars....DAMN U ALL!!!!
akoretz Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 If you're looking at the Omega, consider the Breitling Chronograph Evolution. I bought mine just over a year ago and in a sea of Rolexes and Omegas at the office, people still tell me how much they like my watch. Can't go wrong with any of the watches mentioned.
thechenman Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 I'm wearing a 16610 SS Submariner as I type. It has been my daily watch since purchased new in 2000. It is about 3 minutes fast a month, had it overhauled, but it has begun to pick up speed again. Never seems to pick up more than 3 minutes a month though. Anyway, i love my watch. As it is my daily it takes a beating, but runs great. A fantastic investment IMHO.

Sorry to say but Rolex to me is a default watch purchase these days. However in saying that a Rolex was my first high end watch that purchased.
SCgarman Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 In my opinion the Rolex Submariner in 2 tone with the blue dial is one of the most beautiful timepieces in the world. Am I a bit biased, of course I own one!
thechenman Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 Default or not...whether the person wearing it enjoys the timepiece is all that matters. Who gives a hoot what other people think. If you like it, wear it.
akoretz Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 Default or not...whether the person wearing it enjoys the timepiece is all that matters. Who gives a hoot what other people think. If you like it, wear it. Without a doubt that is the only thing that matters-I was only trying to suggest another sports watch to consider. I was ready to purchase a Rolex before somebody suggested I look at Breitling. Watches are like cigars in a sense-there are some well known brands, but once you dig into the hobby, you find so many great new items you never knew existed before. Prior to joining this community, I knew only of Cohiba and Bolivar. Through suggestions and dialogue, I realized how many other great choices are out there and how much I appreciate being opened up to Upman, Hoyo and Partagas. Zulu, I meant no disrespect towards your timepiece choice. A Rolex Submariner is an example of beautiful horological craftsmanship and I would be lucky to own such a piece-as I'm sure just about every other member here would as well.

I am just happy to see so many members respond to this post. It seems like on the horological scene people love or hate Rolex. I have wanted a Submariner since I was 16 years old. For me there has always been something about the Sub. I have the same attraction to 1960's Series Land Rovers. I have the Land Rover and I am at a point in life, after taking care of everyone else over the years I want my watch.
