rsd Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 I have a slight predicament. I've only just started smoking cigars, so I have very few. I understand that cigars should be aged to reach their full potential, but I need something to smoke while the boxes I buy for ageing sit around for the next few months / years. I don't want to feel like I'm wasting a potentially awesome smoke a year down the line for a mediocre smoke now, so can anyone recommend cigars that are [very nearly] as good when smoked young vs aged?
bc8436 Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as some of the other members here, but from my personal experience, the H. Upmann Mag 46 smokes really well right out of the box. Most of the Bolivar line are decent young as well. BBF, Corona Junior and Petit Coronas are my personal favorites. I've also heard good things about Partagas Shorts, but have not tried one yet.
Rogers72 Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 I think that most cigars coming out right now smoke quite well young. Typically, when I get them, they have around a year of box age on them and I find that I like most cigars better with 1-3 yrs of box age and they often lose a bit of that untamed beast that I like after a few years. Just about any Partagas, Bolivar, Vegas Robaina, Hoyo De Monterrey, and Montecristo is smoking good young right now. There are others I'm sure but these are what i have the most experience with. I think the current Upmann and Cohiba are better to age a few years for my taste. It's all very subjective and you may find that you prefer more age or less age.
Rogers72 Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 Also, Welcome to cigars! The never-ending journey of finding what you like and don't like is a large part of the fun. Dig in!
dB69 Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 It depends on what you like - younger or older ones. I would go with Montecristos. Partys and Bolis are better with some age. This is just my own inexperienced opinion, not any holy truth. Milder cigars will get ready faster than stronger, I have heard people saying.
thechenman Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 ERDM Choix Supreme, RyJ Wide Churchill, Partagas Shorts, Partagas Lusitanias, Partagas 898V, Trinidad Robusto T, RASS, HdM epicure Especial, HdM Magnum 50, PSD4...all of these are smoking well young. Give them a try.

Exactly what the 2 box rule strives to address. Acquire two boxes of a cigar and you can smoke one young as you must have something to smoke. Outside of acquiring aged sticks this is the way to go! Good luck!
Lotusguy Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 I would recommend the Trini Reyes, RyJ Short Churchills, and Monte #2 as cigars that smoke very well young.
ewipper Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 Cohiba Esplendidos, Lanceros, Behike. Monte 3, 4, 5. Hoyo Epi 2 Ramon Allones Superiores Upmann Connoiseur No. 1
El Presidente Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 If you are really enjoying it now....it isn't a waste
Wicky Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 If you are really enjoying it now....it isn't a waste word to your mother.
jedipastor Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 If you are really enjoying it now....it isn't a waste I agree with that. Certianly I wouldn't "worry" about wasting a potentially awesome cigar. Just save a 5-er out of every box and stash them away for a long time to see what you think, or trade for some sticks with age on them.
ColKurtz Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 One could ask our gracious hosts what is smoking good now and pursue that.
bstarrs Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 I am in a very similar position to you in that I've only been smoking for a couple years. For good younger smokes that I have really enjoyed I'll suggest the San Cristobal El Principe and the RA Small Club Coronas. The EP is great for a medium smoke and the RASCC is a real bruiser for such a small smoke.
Holysmokes Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 As some people here have mentioned, the partagas shorts are very good young. I normally purchase a 25 box with a 50 cabinet and smoke the 25 and age the 50 cab. The 50 cabinet isn't that expensive (in the lower 200$) and a box of 25 will run you around 120$ Either way, they are great smokes young. Also, I would also recommend El Rey Del Mundo Choix Supreme. Check em out!
Turrbo Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 If you are really enjoying it now....it isn't a waste A-MEN! If you like it, keep doing what you're doing. You need to create a baseline. Once you have the room/funds save 50% of what you buy. Soon you'll have so many that you'll notice you're buying boxes and you can't get to smoking them because you have some aged ones waiting for you.
CBL Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 I got to agree that if they're smoking good now, than just enjoy them. I spent a huge amount of time, money and space at the beginning of my smoking "career" buying and saving boxes to age. After a while I realized that I had nothing to smoke when standing in front of my humidor staring at those beautiful full boxes. Now I only buy boxes of cigars I'm planning to smoke ASAP and honestly, they age while smoking. If you sit on a box for years and years and they're not as good as you expected, the disappointment is WAY bigger. Having said that, I still really love the sight of full boxes in my humidor......
rsd Posted April 7, 2011 Author Posted April 7, 2011 Thanks, this advice is great. I guess as a lot of you have said, if I'm enjoying them that's the most important thing. I smoke quite infrequently, so as long as I get a box a month I'll quickly have more than I'm smoking, so there will be plenty remaining to age. Lotusguy - I'm glad you mentioned the RYJ Short Churchills since that's what's just arrived. LAE SEPT 10 though, so very young. They smell like a horse paddock, not so sure if that's a good thing Will probably have 1 and then leave the rest for 3 months in the humi at least.

Let us know how you fare with that Short Churchill I have had good luck with them. I buy faster than I smoke so the issue of aging seems to be taking care of itself now - but storage space is running out quickly Also, lately I have been buying less popular or discontinued sticks and those oftentimes come with some age on them (examples: LGC MdO #1 and #3, SCDLH Mercaderes)
Van55 Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 This isn't an answer to your question, exactly. You might ask our gracious host what cigars he has in stock that have some age on them. I am sure he has boxes from 2007 and 2008 that should be smoking well. Maybe he even has some older ones. Drop him an email, and I am sure he will help. He might even recommend a sampler of older sticks from inventory. Look around on the web. While I an a loyal FoH customer, I am aware that there are other vendors out there who have some considerably older stock in their inventories. Of course, you should be aware that there is likely a REASON why certain "vintage cigars" are still available.
joeypots Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 I've always had a soft spot for the Hoyo EPI #1 as a cigar that smokes well young.
