El Presidente Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I want to find out which Cuban Cigar has the highest rate of member satisfaction (and the lowest). I will run through the 30 most popular cigars during April and will provide an ongoing chart to see how the cigars stack up. It should go without saying to only vote if you have actually tried one Feel free to post your experiences and thoughts on the thread Todays cigar: Por Larranaga Petit Corona
sg1234 Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I have had several excellent examples and a couple of so-so ones. I would say the PLPC is generally a very enjoyable smoke.
Van55 Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I gave it the top vote, but with reservations. If smoked too young, they can be unbearably harsh and even unpleasant. They need three or more years to develop the characteristic smooth caramel flavors.
coneatty Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I voted "average" in spite of one cab from 2010 from which at least 50% are plugged. (Not from Czar) The only saving grace is my cab from 2008.....those PLPCs are really decent.
bassman Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Don't care for the 04s & 05s. Rather bitter. Haven't tried any more recent.
ksblazer Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I gave it the top vote, but with reservations. If smoked too young, they can be unbearably harsh and even unpleasant. They need three or more years to develop the characteristic smooth caramel flavors. Couldn't have said it any better. My 2007's just turned the corner about 4 months ago.
ColKurtz Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Voted generally a good experience. Under-filled examples and the aging time required are drawbacks though.
tmac77 Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 +1 on the aging.. prefer them to have 3-4 years and then a go to PC
warren516 Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I tried my first one this evening - it was the first day in 2 weeks where the weather was nice. I was looking forward to seeing what everyone sees in this cigar. It was plugged Maybe the 2nd one that I picked up will be smokeable.
Tarks Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I voted, generally a good cigar. The PLPC have been an average cigar for me. Personally, I feel they are over rated but hey that's just me.
ewipper Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 This question is not fair. When you buy them straight away, they are unsmokably strong. With 5 years of age, excellent. With 10, legendary. Monte 4s are better young. Siglo IIs need 3 or four years.
cigcars Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 *As I've said before concerning my selections & choice of smokes...once upon a time I would have NEVER had the time of day for a petite corona anything...until I became of member of this forum and have read you guys' comments and experiences. And it has been a truly enjoyable, eye-opening pleasurable experience, giving these size smokes a chance. And so far I've been most impressed with the Por Larranaga Petit Corona with its honeyed, maple and raisins lovely habana aroma and flavor!
CBL Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Only had a couple of "fresh" ones which I've never really been impressed with. Voted for the second option.
dicko Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 Had maybe 10-12 as singles and likely young. loved them.
HydroRaven Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I only had (or tried to have I should say) one and it was disappointing. The cap split and came off, which pretty much convinced me to let it burn and wait until the next one to do a fair assessment of this particular vitola. I didn't vote based on that, but I was disappointed with my first experience.
rsd Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I just wanted to chip in that as a new member of the forums and totally new to cigars (less than 10 smoked), this series of threads is awesome. The structure of including past voting results is great - it's quite hard to find reviews on these forums sometimes. As a newb it's great to have a resource like this as a starting point for further investigation on what to buy!
Vetteman Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I haven't smoked many of these, but the ones I have smoked have been enjoyable.
brian1 Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I agree. PLPC average PC for me also. Because of its big rep I voted generally dissapoints. I voted, generally a good cigar. The PLPC have been an average cigar for me. Personally, I feel they are over rated but hey that's just me.
Wicky Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I gave it the top vote, but with reservations. If smoked too young, they can be unbearably harsh and even unpleasant. They need three or more years to develop the characteristic smooth caramel flavors. I have a 08 cab that is hard to smoke right now. I can see the potential but very rough around the edges. On the other hand, I blew through some fresh 010s. One of the best cigars of the year for me. Come to think of it...all of my 010 boxes have been very good so far. Save for one that I won't mention by name.(cohiba)
thechenman Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I voted "Generally always a good experience" for the PLPC. This ranks up there as one of my favorite PCs. As was mentioned before though...the caveat is that you let this cigar age to really reach its' full potential. We are talking years, not months. True from time to time you kind find good cabs that smoke well young, but IMHO, that tends to be the exception rather than the rule. But at this price point, you'd be silly to not pick up a cab of these babies to age and enjoy in 5 years time.
Michel1968 Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 As said before and before and before (repeat until bored) ... good experience when aged...
Dbone Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I voted average. I have a cab from early 09 that I would say has not smoked terrible, then again I have not been impressed with the PLPC as I have been with other PCs such as the Monte 4, Punch PC, Dip 4. So, not bad not great... average. A bit harsh and lack of core flavors, and what others have said, lead me to hope for better smokes at a later date.
tmac77 Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I find it very interesting that such a significant number of votes for the PLPC come in (64%) with an above average rating when compared to the 25% of contestants that selected this same cigar as the PC that Rob sent out in the blind tasting contest. If my memory serves me correctly there were quite a few unflattering reviews in the contest. Of course there are many variables to consider, such as the age of the cigar, the individual reviews etc...but it does make me wonder as to what extent our brains can sub-consciously make this selection process less objective when we know what we are smoking.
Rogers72 Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I voted it generally average. Most of my experience with them has been within two years of box date though. I am however trying to age some now to see if they turn around as I've heard that they will. Call me old fashioned, impatient, or an ignorant American but I don't like to wait for several years or more after I buy something before it becomes "good".
