adic88 Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Not a bad cigar, but not a standout performer (yet?) Expectations may have spoiled me, i was hoping for more tbh. Still, worth an 87/100 all things considered, mostly for an excellent flavour profile and bundles of complexity. Warning, long assed video. I had a lot to say this time.
jerseyjay Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Great review. Thanks ! The wrapper looks amazing indeed. Wouldn't mind photographing that sucker ! No label ?

I jsut wonder if the tightness might be due to the stresses of shipping. d
dicko Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 I reckon they could be going into a "sick" period after what a couple of FOH'ers have said. The reviews from late last yr were glowing in praise.
adic88 Posted March 11, 2011 Author Posted March 11, 2011 Yup, could be stress related to the travel, but certainly the tobacco when it arrived was well humidified already. If it wasn't, the wrapper would have cracked when i massaged it at the end there. Also, the heft of the cigar is quite formidable (lots of tobacco in there), and it's well packed as the video shows. Perhaps just a bit too well packed as the roller may have been generous with the tobacco in this particular stick. It's really not as big a deal as i made it out to be, but draw is just one of my pet peeves, and weighs heavily in my rating; i'm sure others with stronger lungs than me would find it fine. Still, flavour wise, outstanding. That's what really does matter at the end of the day. I'm going to let the other two Czars rest for a bit, but light up one Tampa this weekend. Look out for that review.
stunod Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Great review. Cigars look incredible, like they were dipped in oil. Can't wait for your next review.
Puros Y Vino Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 I reckon they could be going into a "sick" period after what a couple of FOH'ers have said. The reviews from late last yr were glowing in praise. Interesting that you said that. I reviewed the Czar a while back and really enjoyed it. Recently while admiring my remaining Czars I noticed a slight ammonia aroma to them. Two weeks later that has subsided and an intense chocolate aroma has taken over. I can only assume that a sick period had settled in and that they're starting to turn around now.
investandprosper Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 If you just got them in not too long ago, and they were wet, that would seriously affect the draw. I had some PSD4s last year which I kept at 70% RH for a few weeks. The draw tightened up like they were rolled too tight, but in fact the tobacco had just absorbed too much moisture and it made the draw tight. A few weeks at 65% and all was well. Sounds like the well humidified tobacco accounted for the tight draw in your Czar.

Almost like the appeal of undergrad coeds?
Trimble Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Thanks for the review Aizuddin, great job. I look forward to your Tampa review.
El Presidente Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Have only tried 2 from the new batch, one each of the Tampa and Czar. The aroma from both is as if they have come off the rolling table yesterday. Very oily and still very wet. Unfortunately need 6 months to settle down or as a minimum dry boxed for a few weeks. I will visit them again in September
skindiver Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Hamlet have anything to do with these or not, Rob?
skindiver Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Hamlet have anything to do with these or not, Rob? I seldom sneeze at his!
adic88 Posted March 12, 2011 Author Posted March 12, 2011 I've got several Hamlets in the humidor that look suspiciously similar... especially the figurados.
El Presidente Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Hamlet have anything to do with these or not, Rob? Absolutley nothing to do with them.
Van55 Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Typical of what way too many smokers call a "plugged" cigar. It was just too tight and likely too wet. I would have pitched it. Your experierience was very different from that of my friend RSPDiver with the Czar. His cigar drew perfectly and produced copious smoke. He would rate the cigar in the 90s and from what I shared with him I would concur. It appears that samples of the Tampa and the Czar can be quite inconsistent from one to the next at this point
mrmighty Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Thanks for the review! I also am one that has a pet peeve towards a too tight draw. I also don't like a super easy, no resistance at all draw. I agree with others so far regarding the tight draw that: 1. Traveling unsettled them and they needed just a bit more time resting 2. It really was just a too packed and tight cigar 3. It needed some dry boxing, which might just be a symptom of #1 Thanks again for the great review!!
