dicko Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 A girl from my high school won 1.2 mill just after we graduated. She said it was the worst thing that happened to her. Friends and relatives came knocking etc.. Still 20m is a different story. and a little older/little wiser might help. Low profile early: To be honest I would initially put it all in a high interest savings account. Take out $50-60 K, keep a low profile, and finish my last year of uni. Easier said than done. Travel/houses: Then I would travel for a year or two. Visit FOH'ers, visit Cuba, tour of Europe/USA etc Then I would buy a nice house by the beach (like 1-2 mill), nothing huge, but a nice place in a nice street etc. Buy a nice car (nothing too flashy) like a nice BMW or Audi, jag maybe. no ferrari or lambo needed here. maybe $100K Then I would buy a flat/house in nice holiday spots around Australia. a flat in London. a flat in Scotland. both to see family. Hire them out certain times of year as holiday homes. That would take care of another 6-7 mill. Family: buy my mum a nice flat ($1mil max - it's all she would want). buy her a little 3 series BMW. same with bro. buy him a house, give him $100k to start a plumbing business. (no strings attached - i know he wouldnt blow it on coke/strippers etc). Dad gets $500k no strings attached. 50K cash no strings to 1st cousins and Aunty/uncles (1 mill). Invest: The rest (say 10 mill) maybe put 2 mill in medium/high risk share porfolios. nothing stupid, i would want a profit of them but if it all went to **** it would be ok. The remaining say 8 mill in a high interest gvt garunteed bank account/s. live of the interest. enough to live a nice upper-middle class existence. maybe take a $500k loan off myself and start a firm/business when im done travelling. Splurge: Only real splurge I would have is constructing a nice underground state-of-the art wine cellar and cigar humidor (and fill it). spend a mill or 2. Fit out a state of the art gym. olympic lifting platform, world class bars/bumpers. $1 mill it's nice to dream lol What would you do?
dicko Posted February 16, 2011 Author Posted February 16, 2011 Lifted this from another forum. Interesting range of responses. Some said "live on as normal but live off interest etc", some where keen on starting their dream businesses, some said "blow it on coke/strippers and ferraris and be broke in a couple of years" lol Interested to see how FOH responds...
El Presidente Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Gift $1m to Lisa Smithy Diana Purchase Apartment (all on same level $550 each) and Car each for kids ($25 each) Ben Becky Tom Gift $1m to Freefallguys Nic Foundation. Give wife $3m in her own account. Fix up house as wife wants it ($600k). Buy myself an appartment city($600k) Little house in the country ($350K) Purchase a Merceded G class cabrio AMG Go fishing around the world for the rest of my days with you guys.
Sutton Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Put 50% into multiple investments, probably drop 25% on family ,friends & charity. And the rest on impulse buys: homes, vehicles, cigars & travelling. But the right answer might be give the wife 1/2 right off the bat & see what happens from there.
LeafLover Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Pay off mortgages for all of my immediate family. $1 million to each of my kids and my brother's kids in some sort of financial vehicle that will earn itself money $2 million each to my brothers and parents Stash another $2 million each for them should they blow it Start businesses with my brothers and parents Start some type of e-commerce for myself Cigars (do some serious collecting) Single malt scotch (do some serious collecting) Cabinet Humidor Keep the same cars (I don't see the point in overspending for something that depreciates the moment you drive it off the lot and depreciates every year thereafter) 100k to a different charity every year Buy a kick ass stunt kite so I can go to the park and smoke cigars and watch my kids fly it.
Fuzz Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Set aside 20K for each of my cousins (I got a lot of cousins so this could be expensive, probably $800k). Those over 18 get it now, those under will have a trust fund created until they reach 18. Parents and brother get $3m each to do as they please. Donate $1m to charities (Save the Whalers, Guns for Toys, etc). Set up my own trust fund for charities Give $100k (no strings attached) to my closest mates who have long endured my antics. Keep $3M for myself. Maybe blow another mill on travelling the world and enjoying life to the fullest, before coming home in a worn out heap of well abused flesh. By a 10 acre block and build my dream home; octagon shaped, multi-storied, fully self-sustained powerwise with the entire roof covered in solar panels and capacitors to hold the charge overnight, a retractable domed roof over the central space... and maybe a few gun emplacements to keep the weirdos at bay... Anything left will be invested for the long run.
cigcars Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 *I like your "dream BIG" outlook, Dicko! With my lil' ole' 20 mil I'd: First: Tithe it. Second: After taking care of family and close friends, fund those organizations digging wells for free flowing water, getting plenty of food & foodstuffs for hungered individuals, families, places, etc. Third: I've always imagined funding an "experimental" shelter for the working homeless and others, primarily for single, down on their luck men (and no I don't "have any ideas"!!) As I've donated to shelters a good part of my life and as I couldn't avoid any longer the insistences of the donee organization to come by - I tell you...the experience changed me even more so. Without getting into too much detail (or preaching) I thought about ways I could run a shelter for homeless, working individuals where not only privacy, but DIGNITY would be respected, as well as non-judgemental fun and recreation would be available and so on. Fourth: Buy a private place of my very own for ME - and another adjoining private place for all my stogies I'm gonna collect!
Stalebread Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Immediately divide what is left after taxes into three "accounts" -- one for me (with one fourth of the money), one for my wife (with another fourth) and a third account (with half) to take care of joint projects, needs and dreams. Donate significant amounts to existing organizations like the Center For Inquiry that "foster a secular society based on science, reason, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values." Other than that, I'm not sure. I can identify several areas that interest me. But before I start giving money away to this worthy cause and that worthy cause I'd probably get help in figuring out how my relatively small amount of money might be leveraged for the most impact. And there's still plenty left over for personal property, travel and things. .
samb Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Pay off the bills for self and family, buy new cars for self and family, new houses for self and family, and probably a couple vacation homes. Probably donate some to charity, though which one Im not sure of. Divide the rest between high interest accounts, and travel/leisure (cigars, wine, etc.). Finish school and keep my job.
dicko Posted February 16, 2011 Author Posted February 16, 2011 Well I'm the only person to not mention charity so far lol never really thought about making a fund specifically for it, would certainly do it informally though i.e put $50 in a charity tin instead of a few coins kind of thing.
anacostiakat Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Quit work immediately. Wife to quit work immediately. Move to a spot where I could have a kennel. Upgrade vehicles. Stock the bar and the humi. Make charitable contrib's as we determine.
Puros Y Vino Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Quit work. Live off the interest. Some money to my brothers. Either a lump sum or pay off their mortgages. Put college/University money aside for my two nieces. (no school no money though) Move my mother to wherever she wants to live. Help out a friend or two. Make a few investments here and there. (software development mostly and gold bullion) Buy a small home in the Italian countryside. One home somewhere in the Caribbean for the Winter. Build a walk in humidor. Populate that humidor. Build a properly ventilated smoking room/man cave in both homes. Build a nice wine cellar. Populate that cellar. Buy a nice but not stupidly expensive sportscar. I love the late 80's early 90's Lotus Esprits' and Porsche 928's. Throw a few FOH bashes in various locations around the world. Have a custom made 24k gold big ass dollar sign ($) pendant to wear around my neck. Maybe about the size of a football. And a solid gold pimp cane with a gaudy diamond on top. OK..maybe not those two last items.
Nocoins Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 The only things I know I would do for sure is to take care of immediate family -- my parents, my wife's parents, our brothers and sisters, and our kids. I'd love to find a way to help friends, but I would hate having to draw those lines. Immediate family seems clear, not to mention it's hard to argue with. I know a couple families that have won lotteries. One of them won $6 million, and the dude keeps playing because he thinks he'll win again. Here's the one I think is hysterical -- this guy who used to work at my old employer went on a business trip to California with some other guy. Lottery was like $30 million at the time. So the one dude says he's going to get 30 tickets, and the other dude says, okay, I'll pay for 3 of them. They won, but one of them won 9 times the amount of the other. Go halfsies, my friends.
Turrbo Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Step 1 Call all my friends And family and tell them my dad is sick and I need some money to get him well and ask for whatever they can give, $20 would even help. Who ever gives me even a penny for help gets $25k Step 2 Buy rental property and hire a management group to run them. Wire the income to multiple accounts that are titled after the item I'm saving up for. For example: beach house in France, Mclaren f1, trip around the world. If I don't save up that amount in my lifetime I hope it will accumulate and happen in my Childs lifetime. Step 3 Keep doing what I'm doing now cause I love it
PigFish Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 .... is that enough to buy a life like Robs? I don't know! Somehow I think many are incapable of handling large sums of money. I would not dole it out to anyone in mass. I would be bothered watching the house I buy go to disrepair or become mortgaged, or lost in divorce. This is life as I know it and I don't think that will stop with a big gift. Instead I would likely set up trusts that allow those to responsibly live their lives without the fear of unemployment. 20 or 30 million does no buy luxury for many people and actually won't go far once you acquire a taste for $200K cars and million dollar houses. The best thing is to not ruin the lives of the ones you love by thinking that you can give them happiness with houses or their own helicopter to get them into town! Many young people with acting gifts or athletic abilities simply run amuck from easy money and no discipline. A budget in the form of a trust gives lifeline security but allows people to do what people do, and not distroy the gift given them. If they want more than a secure modest lifestyle... one without the burden of working, then they can add to it by working themselves and earn it themselves. I would likely buy some acreage and build a compound keeping my friends and family that wish to join my wife and I and enjoy the life God gave us without worry. Luxury is what you believe luxury to be, but worry ruins the simplest or most extravagant lifestyles. Passing on a gift that allows those that you love to live without fear is worth protecting and not squandering. I would get even more political and start my own PAC... PiggyPac! I want my country back! Living in a tyranny, either hard or soft, takes the luster from life for everyone except those in power. You have no future without passing along a country as strong and free as the one given you. Opportunity is a byproduct of freedom. I would focus on charity that supports those that defend or have defended my country. I owe all that I have to the veterans that forged my country and have defended it thoughout history. These folks should be treated honorably. That is all that I can think of for now! -Piggy
Rogers72 Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Just for fun, I'll assume it's 20Mil taxes paid. 1.) Not tell a bloody soul. (i would tell my wife that I won 5 Million but not to tell anyone) 2.) put 5 million into a trust fund for each of my 2 children (-10Mil) that they can access on their 18th birthday for educational expenses and their 30th birthday unlimited access. 3.) Sell my current home and buy a new one (-2Mil) 4.) Buy my wife a new car (-50K) 5.) Blow about 50K on cigars, booze, guitars misc other toys. (-50K) 6.) That leaves me with just a hair under 8 Million. I would invest it diversely with a good amount put away very securely. I would quit my job and live/travel on the interest and dividends plus a little extra. My focus would be on not owning anything like boats and planes but just making sure that myself and my kids lived a worry-free life with regards to finances. I would give to various charities as I went along rather than in lump-sum up front.
DustyOats Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 I tell you what I'd do, man... Two chicks at the same time, man.
gmoney Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 I tell you what I'd do, man... Two chicks at the same time, man. Nicely done.
FireDigger Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 I tell you what I'd do, man... Two chicks at the same time, man. Beat me to it!
Ken Gargett Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 get fit. would seem a shame to have all that dosh and then fall off the perch.
ryans Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 With $20 million it's quite easy to make another $20 million, and then another, and then another, ect. And by that time; you're too rich to be bothered making a list on how you're going to spend it, nor can you keep track of your expenditures or prices of them.
frenchkiwi Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 was told about this tv doco they did recently on lotto winners. a large majority of them were unhappy, a significant proportion had blown the cash in one way or another. then came these two 20 year olds who won a paltry $100,000. they took a year out to travel the world, stay in fancy hotels, and blew it all on girls and drink etc etc. and they said it was the best year of their life and the best thing they'd ever done. maybe they'll change this assessment in 20 years time but it was funny!
Wicky Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 I'd stuff a million of it in a mattress and just sleep on it a while. whats the hurry? I'M RICH ******!
