Interesting reading.

Glad to see the big names don't escape your review.I think many folk would have taken a pot shot at the easy targets(like the tight short wearing fish kisser),and not mentioned the big names to protect their income!Fair play to you.

Agree re trditionales and generosos, not good.

It's a shame to hear about the VR Famosos going down hill. The 09s were okay and I'm still smoking out of the box while hiding a box of 08s deep in the coolerdor.

Same here. I just finishing off an '09 box of Famosos. Gonna have the last one today.

Most of this list I agree with. Although I have had pretty good luck with a couple of them. So do not totally agree. :P The Partagas Salomones for one. Maybe I have been fortunate.

9. Romeo y Julieta Churchill

This is such a shame, a great cigar with 5+ of age, they need to bring it back to the original standard but I belive we will see it removed from production in 3-4 years, sad

8. Trinidad Fundadores

I love this cigar when its on, problem is that I have three boxes that are to tight, all of them. This is the gem among the long and skinny. Will it be cut, probably....

5. Cohiba Siglo VI

Still all my Siglo VI has been excellent, but i havent purchased any 09 or 10.

Now I would like to add the Cohiba Robusto, they used to be excellent but somehow they have declined. I believe its because overproduction.

4. Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill

The Nub of habanos, i dont like it, dont even like the concept, a churchill should be a churchill...

3. Vegas Robaina Famosos

Love them, got some boxes of 09 and they are really great.

2. Sancho Panza (Any).

1. Montecristo Open

0. Cuaba

00. Quai D'orsay

000. Quintero

Why are they still producing these but discontinuing diplomaticos?

The only cigar on that list I normally buy is the VR Famoso. Recently started a box from 02 that so far has been excellent.

I completely agree with the RyJ statement.....really seem to have fallen off the past few years. The only luck I have had in that line is the Cazadores.

Thank You Mr President for your insights. Being new to this forum and new to the pleasures of cigar smoking I find your insights and knowledge to be invaluable in helping me select the cigars I wish to enjoy.

P.S. Happy Belated Birthday

This post makes me want to cry. So many of my faves are on here. It's just sad when a list like this includes some of "the best cigars on earth". It almost makes an argument for the new releases/ELs. Imagine that Partagas figures so prominently (pardon the pun). I hope this is just a temporary lull as they use up old stock of leaf or something, but this kind of thing makes it hard to shell out for the expensive hallmark cigars.

I have never had a Presidente, but they look absolutely classic. I have one P. Salomon which I'll try to leave for at least another year, but at least the others I've had recently were well constructed, with good draw, good wrapper and good burn.

I'm looking forward to a post about the Habanos Festival in case there is something stellar soaking up all the juicy tobacco these days.

Interesting list. I've had similar experiences with a few on there.

Partagas Presidente. I've had two. They looked great. Construction was nice, aroma at cold was pleasant but they smoked like paper. Virtually no taste. Never going to buy them again.

Romeo Y Julieta Churchill. One of my favourites. That is until the last five I had were completely plugged duds. Barely made it through the 2nd third before having to give up. Taste wise they were a bit bitter at times. I have five left that I'm hesitant to light up. Such a shame for an iconic cigar.

Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill. I bought mine a little over two years ago and they're great. Lots of cherry hints along with nice earthy and cedary tones. From what you wrote it looks like they're going downhill. On a positive note, the Wide Churchills are pretty damn good cigars.

Montecristo Open. Just had the one Open Eagle I bought from the LCDH. Terribly disappointing cigar.

I have now had 3 Partagas Solmones, from an 07 box and each one has been a complete disappointment. horrible construction, no smoke, no flavor. I would get rid of them, but I won't put even my enemies through this experience. Worst stick in my humi bar none.

Cuaba should be reduced to Divinos, Distinguidos, Salomones. The Divinos construction is all over the place currently. Still it is a very good cigar when rolled properly. The Distinguidos is the best of the lot and consistently the best rolled. The Salomones needs more attention. Far too many wind tunnels with average wrappers. They could really tidy up this Marque with not much effort.

Quai D'Orsay consistency and roll is good. marketing is appaling. I don't hold much hope that you will see the Marque much longer. I could be wrong.

Quintero is in their top 5 marques sold globally by volume. It isn't going anywhere.

I don't inspect Quintero but I enjoy the Panetela from time to time. It is a mass market decent cigar with no hint of great expectation.

It's a pity that Christian Blanc (the minister with 12,000euros of cuban cigars charged to the public purse) wasn't actually the minister of foreign affairs - the ministry famously located on Quai d'Orsay. They could set up a publicity stunt with him as figurehead.

Quai d'Orsay ... let yourself be corrupted today.

Looking forward to it!

Vegueros are being dry boxed as we speak!

That said - I'm the only one I know who likes the Party Presidentes. Proof Positive I'm off my rocker.

You know at least one other, Chris!

I have not too long ago cracked the last of three boxes of '98s bought in Cuba ten years ago,

all with identical codes. They went through a long period of relative blandness, but recently have blossomed. They are now real dynamite; rich, very, very strong, and full of flavour.

In fact, they are almost over the top for me, so I only smoke one when I am prepared for a real challenge.

It will be fascinating to follow them over the years to come.

Draw and burn, BTW, have settled to a virtual perfection...

and these were made in a provincial factory, Villa Clara!

As to R&J, I am currently really enjoying some '05 Coronitas en Cedro, the '04 LEs,

and my last few well-aged Churchills in tubo.

Cazadores, IMHO, are great smokes at reasonable prices.

The rest of the line, I can live without...

And, if you think you are a lone crazy, I love my ten year old Cuaba Exclusivos!

Perhaps add the PSD4s in the stable of "inconsistent" greats. Seems like it takes quite a bit of luck to find a good stick nowadays.

Agree, and would add PartShorts. Hot air or so, when draw is correct (very often overfilled)

Fantastic Thread, very informative. I am very sad to hear about the Siglo VI, and the R&J Churchill. I remember the R&J Churchills of the late 90's, one of my most favorite smokes, the boxes today are terrible.

Haha Good stuff, Ron! Us Presidentes Fans gotta stick together. Besides - until they discontinue them - more for us!

Those Exclusivos are allllllll yours though haha!!

*Don't know if I can name 10 worsts among cubans. I will say I have profound distaste for the Trinidad line, and also feel the Vegueros, though smoking nice and flavorfully, won't be missed. You can also delete those stupid Cabanas as they are hard to trace any flavor within whatsoever. MHO

1. Montecristo Open

I force myself to smoke the range once a quarter just to see if they are improving. Yes, I have had solid 88 point cigars. I have never had anything higher and the majority are between 82-84 points. The wrappers are generally fine and far more consistent than any other cigar. However, the blend is simply insipid with a complete lack of complexity/evolution or depth. It is the most "un-Cuban" of any cigar being produced in Cuba today.

I just had one yesterday and I stopped smoking it half way it was so bad. It tasted like a bitter branch filled with Jalapeno seeds! My friend kept telling me that it would get better and I kept giving it a chance until the half way point. I just had to put it down. Could be one of the worst cigars I've ever had, I wouldn't even pass this out as a gag gift!

I'm glad I caught this, I'm getting ready to make my fist purchase in almost 4 yrs. Jsut finished a box of Siglo VIs from 04 that was absolutely wonderfull. Sorry to hear they have gone down hill.

Sad to say I agree on Sancho Panza. I used to be a fan. In fact, I had bought a box of Sancho Sanchos for New Years, and they were nowhere near up to snuff. Not surprised about the Siglo VI, built I haven't smoked one of those since they were first released.
