headstand Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Presidente, Thanks for the list - love the candor! I found FOH through the video reviews on youtube: passionate, super entertaining, and informative. So I signed up to my very first forum and am offering this, my very first post. I’m quite new to cigars, but have smoked enough Cubans to recognize that there are differences between and within brands. I now want to move from a haphazard sampling of cigars to assembling a humidor that is representative of the better Habanos. I did not expect to hear that there could be so much variation between production years and even months. My wish list has been edited accordingly. Still, I would appreciate some input w.r.t. RyJ as I have enjoyed the brand and had high hopes for the Short Churchill. Thanks and cheers,
jedipastor Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 This whole issue of inconsistency is the biggest problem for the future of Cuban cigars. And, for me personally, this is why when I am in the mood for a cigar that I KNOW will not disappoint me, I can't grab anything from that island. There are so many non-Cuban cigars that (although very different) are consistently excellent. There are times I consider stopping acquiring Habanos altogether. If I were made of money I could buy box after box to get some good ones ... but I'm not, and these things aren't cheap. But even more precious to me these days is time--and when I finally get time to sit down for a cigar only to encounter a "bad stick," it just puts me off the whole island. Maybe when I'm older and retired and am smoking 5 cigars a day, I'll be able to just shrug off the bad ones, but not now.

And from these "Worst Top 10" and "Dunce of the Decade" threads, it seems a lot of people have been plenty disappointed by a lot of Habanos too.
Guest robrojas Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 FOH, You guys ROCK! Love the YouTube video reviews and the pure honesty. It's so refreshing and damn funny too! You guys must have a great time smoking cigars, drinking and laughing at each other. I am a huge fan! I am going to add my 2 cents to this one about the R&J's I agree 100% They have been a real disapointment of late. I have a box of Exhibition #4's dated 07/08 that I purchased recently and they have been horrible. Light wrappers, tight draw and no flavor. I have noticed that everytime I get Habanos with a light wrapper they taste like crap or have a tight draw. I have an older almost empty box from 2005 nice chocolate brown wrapper and they are amazing! This is very depressing because as stated seems like R&J's have been made poorly lately. I notice all the Hoyos, J Lopez & Saint Louis Reys I get are usually top notch. Thanks guys for the great reviews! Excellent work!
PigFish Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 I don't typically smoke many of these cigars on Bwana's list but I do like the Fundi... What a new one tastes like is beyond me. I am still smoking '99's. Too bad about the RyJ C-hill. I don't typically smoke C-hills but the Romeo was one that I used to like. Last box I owned was late 90's. Don't care for the Famosos, never did. Too bad for those of you who don't like QdO's. I love them; really one of the best little coronas around. Damn... the '01 Coronas Claro is a cigar you should acquire if you can find them. 90's vintage Imperiales are some of the most complex, extraordinary cigars that I have had the chance to smoke and I normally am not a C-hill guy. Disappointing cigars for me are no mystery; almost any piramides or robusto. They are all over produced and sketchy at best. I have been working though some '07 M-2 that have been good, but the piramides can't hold up to the La Punta.
noreaster Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 Party Salamones. never again. also ERDM elegantes. thought i made a score when i bought them. now i know why they were available.pity is i still have 2 more boxes taking up valuable space in my humi.
mttlong Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Perhaps add the PSD4s in the stable of "inconsistent" greats. Seems like it takes quite a bit of luck to find a good stick nowadays. Good lord!! And I just got a box of this today! If I had to pick though, I have to say it's the Ramon Allones Specially Selected. My brother and myself smoked a couple of these last Saturday night and it was awful!
