adic88 Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 I did something really silly the other day: i had the sniffles, was coughing and had a bit of a sore throat. But i was at a function and a friend who knew i was a cigar man offered me an aged Upmann. I couldn't refuse. It was a good cigar, but i think it was the straw that raped the camels back (ie. my throat). Since then, for the last few days, i've got a raging sore throat that i can't get rid of. I've been to the doctor's, got my cough syrup, and my lozenges but it isn't working. So do you guys have any secret remedies or miracle cures that you'll swear by to cure a sore throat?
mkz Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 A sore throat is a pain in the arse mate. Here´s whats works for me: Get a whole root of ginger. Cut it up in small pieces and boil it in water. The longer the better. From here you can drink it as a hot tea, natural or with your preffered liquer, honey, sugar etcetera. If im going to work I just drink it natural... before bedtime I pour in some Stroh-rum (80%) and sleep like a baby... Good luck!
CDNeh Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 The best solution that I have come across for stopping the pain of a sore throat is the Extra Strength Cepacol Lozenges. These babies stop the pain with a few minutes. I am not sure if they are available in your neck of the woods Regards
Torontonian Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Prevention is key - buttressing the immune system. (It's been almost two years since I've had as much as a sniffle.) That said, what about gargling?
Torontonian Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Go to the health food store and get some oil of oregano. Seven or eight drops on a spoon then down the hatch, 3 or 4 times a day. It''s a natural antibiotic and should go to the root of the problem. Obviously I'm not a doctor but it works for me. If your throat is really sore you might want to mix it with some olive oil because it burns a bit goin down. Good luck. I take oil of oregano once a week or so.
aes8 Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Oreos and Orange Juice and not the double stuffed or new crap that they make today. Just the old fashioned Oreos. And not orange drink, or Sunny D or anything like that. Just plain orange juice. Good luck and hope you feel better
mazolaman Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Whisky is good. Doesn't do much for your throat, but if you drink enough, you don't give a toss about it!
sandholm Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Sorry to say, but all prevention or cure are not helpful (except placebo but that is no cure) because most sore throat comes from viral infections, and nothing to do with a viral infection then wait it out. so, you just have to wait it out, no magical cures
lordlister Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Zinc lozenges help me through a cold a but quicker. It won't help the sore throat, but it will help it resolve quicker.

No. First oregano is antiseptic, antispasmodic but its not antibiotic which means that it kills the living organism, antiseptic means that it prevents its growth. IF it was antibiotic it would not be sold at the health food store because it would generate more revenue at the pharmacy. Second sore throat are most caused by virus, and viruses are not alive and therefore not even real antibiotics will do a single thing with them (viruses are not alive) What you might feel is placebo, but you could just take seven to eight drops of water and just think its oregano oil, same effect. cheers
rfenst Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Virtually eery single time I have a sore throat, post-nasal drip is a major factor. So, I just use a netti-pot.
Ellery Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 For a sore throat, the best remedy is salt water gargle and nasal decongestants.
cigcars Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 *Well, as Dr. J J ignores her own doctor's words: "You practicing without a license again? 'Go to jail!" here is my diagnosis (and which has so far worked everytime!) As I HATE sore throats (pain, discomfort - can't enjoy my habanas!!) Colgate brand's "Peroxyl" (or a store brand knockoff w/same ingredient). It's for sores in the mouth and so on, but I gargle with that bad boy as far back in my throat as I can get it toward where the pain is. It KNOCKS OUT that sore throat for me everytime. Peroxide is for infections and this concoction is for the mouth's infection problems. Just one or two times a day usually suffices. ALSO, drink Pineapple Juice. Everybody thinks it's Orange Juice you drink for colds and such. It's PINEAPPLE JUICE. THAT will keep you from getting that nagging cough that follows colds, infections and such. Note: DON'T get it out of the refrigerated section in pasturized cartons. It's delicious and tasty but it DOESN'T WORK from out of there. I guess the pasturization or whatever kills its potency. Try to find ORGANIC Pineapple juice. If you just can't get hold of that, then at very least the canned juice on the grocery shelves will do for the time being. And chewable Zinc tablets will also be effective. Hope this is some help! 'From Dr. J J at your service!
Dbone Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Drink plenty of water and sleep as much as possible. Cold fluids help reduce inflammation if your tonsils are swollen, warm fluids do the opposite. Also, ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory which will reduce the swelling of your tonsils and relieve pain temporarily. Your body needs to produce a lot of white blood cells and beat the virus out, plenty of water and rest most of all.
Colt45 Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Aiz, I've something you can try, but it's not for the weak. you'll need a few things: A grass skirt A Zorro mask (or similar) A chicken or whole salmon Invite over family and friends and ply them with drink. When they are feeling good, slip away and strip down, putting on the grass skirt and mask. Come out into the room full of people, giving a blood curdling scream. Once you have their attention, begin to hop around on one foot while swinging the chicken (or whole salmon) over your head, all the while singing a medley from the HMS Pinafore. It won't do anything for your sore throat, but it will make your guests feel great! I feel better already.......

As for fixing your sore throat, my doc always recommends fluids and plenty of rest. So grab a couple of bottles of whisky and drink until you pass out.
adic88 Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 Haha, you guys, so funny! I tried the ginger trick suggested by mkz (i happened to have a couple of ginger roots available at home), and i'm feeling better already! Might even be ready for a cigar or two soon... Thanks everyone.
DoubleDD Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I usually love a hot cup of green tea with a bit of honey and lemon. Usually soothes my throat and keeps the pain to a minimum. When I have a cold or a sore throat I usually avoid cigars, just don't get the whole pleasure out of the experience when I'm sick.
sandholm Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Well here's the product brochure if you're interested. I guess they are liars. http://www.joyofthemountains.com/pdf/produ...%20Brochure.pdf Read the last page of the brochure..... "The claims made in this pamphlet lack sufficient clinical evidence, and are based on traditional evidence and laboratory studies. The information in this pamphlet is provided with the understanding that Joy of the Mountains is not rendering medical advice. It is for educational purposes only and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any health condition. Consult a health care professional for advice. The decision to use, or not to use, any of this information is the sole responsibility of the reader." So No they are not lying, they do say that they claim things that they can not prove, and I have no clue what is "traditional evidence and laboratory studies" because if a drug is valid or not is done through a clinical study. Sorry to say but if you use this you are just buying something that are complete useless. Another thing, on the second page they list CONDITIONS not actually dieses, how do you cure a condition? You should cure the dieses and if you do that the condition goes away. Sore throat is most common from a VIRUS, we cant kill viruses because they are not alive, simple put (we can but if we do we kill the person). Lets look a bit more Chicken Pox - Virus Candidiasi - fungal, need a bit stronger medicins to kill fungus. Torn Ligaments, wove magic healing power, thought that only existed in World of Warecraft or whatever its called Frozen shoulder, well, this is not a medical term which is adhesive capsulitis and its a conical and not to forget Arthritis and Tendonitis hold the presses, we can stop all those really expensive surgery, because we have oregano Back to the brochure "Dr. Paul Belaiche combined clinical application with in-vitro research on the beneficial effects " sounds cool, but a major problem, in-vitro means that he had some cells in a petri dish and poured oregano oil on them. That is not the type of clinical test you want to see. You want to see result from in-vivo, which means that you make the study on a living animal and look at the whole living animal and the effect of the drug/chemical. Sounds fancy which the "Dr. Belaiche (University of Paris, France)" but just a tiny tiny problem. University of Paris existed between 1200 - 1970, and lets go back to the text..... "his famous 1978 work Treatise on Phytotherapy and Aromatherapy" In 1978 University of Paris did not exist, instead it were split up into thirteen universities in 1970.... (and just a minior thing, I could not found any Dr Paul Belaiche working or worked at any of the universities... but that does not say that he has existed, just I could not find him) There is NO evidence at all that any medical product in a health store is effective, IF they were they would be sold at the pharmacy as a medicin backed up with proper clinical study. So to sum up, yes they are lying, but not enough to stop them selling this crap to people who want magic treatments and fairy tales. Next time read the small prints (for those who want can replace oregano with homeopathy in this discussion)

When I have a cold or a sore throat I usually avoid cigars, just don't get the whole pleasure out of the experience when I'm sick. this is the ticket for me.. honey and lemon.. many times a day.. it won't get rid of the infection but will help sooth the throat until all better..
ajgagnon Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Cold FX before/during sickness. Oregano oil kicks ass (makes me want to vomit/cry). Echinacea just in case (45 drops to the back of the throat), and if you still get a nasty cold/flu, Buckley's Mixture will clear out the muck. How's that for a Canuck response?
