tigger Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Pretty fancy iron there. Not sure I'd buy it, even if I were made of money, as I have some sort of block about owning guns I can't shoot. Closest I've ever come to having something along the "don't shoot" lines is the Singer M1911 that my father-in-law sold before I even met my wife. I give him grief about that to this day.

While never really considering myself a collector I actually bought the guns just because of what I could buy them for. My old man, a gun enthusiast himself and a prolific inventor, had a patent attorney who often also worked for Colt FA. As a result they sent him collector guns as a "spiff" for the job. When he retired, I cleaned out his office, so to speak as he had no interest in the guns at all above and beyond the few bucks he could get and wall art. I bought a couple of WWI commemorative 1911's, new in display boxes for $150 each! I also bought some single action hog legs, no longer produced for next to nothing. I will have to post some pics sometime. While I would not pay 10K for that pistol, I gotta' say I would love to have one! It might go nice with my 100th Aniv. Harley!!! -LOL Thanks for sharing. -P Wow... current bid 82K! Ouch!

TMS36 Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Little too flamboyant for my tastes, but the 1911 in general is a timeless piece. 50 years from now kids will be running around offing each other with laser rifles and I'll still be on my lawn waving my 1911 at them telling them to get off my grass

I do... but my neighbors might object to all the brass going over the fence!!! -LOL For that problem I use a 1000fps .177 pellet rifle. That is quite a piece of hardware. You need a key to the armory to feed that one, I'll bet! You a collector or law enforcement?

Maybe Rob should open us up Pet Loads forum! -LOL While I don't do anything gun related professionally, firearms are a major passion of mine not only as a hobby, but shall I say "politically" as well. I don't frequent any shooters forums so finding someone who is a ballistics professional, here, is kind of a treat. I have been shooting since before I can remember and started taking an interest in exterior ballistics at about 14 when I started reloading my own metallic. I don't shoot much these days, no more 5 gallon pails of brass but I still love the sport, reload, and shoot when I can. I miss the days where I would throw out a tarp at the Steel Challenge Club and hose through a 1000 rounds of 38 Super without a second thought. Now if I shoot 50 rounds of 308 or 243... its a big day!!! -LOL Glad to make your acquaintance! -Piggy, but you can call me Ray (as the saying goes)

It was interesting to watch the evolution of the 1911 in my days shooting IPSC. A lot of guys had problems with Colt Series 80s and slide failure. I have a comped Gold Cup in 45 that has the familiar crack in the firing pin safety well but it never developed further. My 38 Super is a SA with no pin safety. While they provide a degree of safety for those prone to drop weapons, I think that they are a functional nightmare. I don't know where they stand today but there was a day when SA made the best 1911's. JMHO. -Piggy
