#2 man Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 Prez, your not alone I did the same thing a few years ago people were walking by and i was letting fly off the balcony ...making room for more
CigarZen Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 The balcony is now promoted as the guest bathroom. we've all been there mate...
Warren Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 So the old prostate is in good working order then.
Omskakas Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 I have 22 of these left from 2003 5 packs. The cardboard packs don't seem to do much for the aging of these as they have been a letdown for me. Would removing them from the packs and storing in a cedar box improve them with time, or is it too late? I also tried this even though experience told me not to. The cigars I got in packs were definitely not as good as the ones from my cab. I immediately put them in a box and after a year or so they seem to have improved some, although I might be kidding myself. Anyway, it's worth a try. I won't go for packs anymore unless they're fresh. I have an option to buy 2003 cardboard stored cigars and 2008 cabs. Do you think I should go for 2008 cabs?
Ken Gargett Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 They may have a skin full of red wine but they still can do a professional review. one of us was dead sober, smithy. but then i wasn't driving. he is a disgrace, isn't he.
88keys Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 I have an option to buy 2003 cardboard stored cigars and 2008 cabs. Do you think I should go for 2008 cabs? The 03s I got in packs weren't nearly as good as in the cab and I thought it was probably related to the packaging. I tried it because I have a suspicion that the blend changed after 03, but I wouldn't buy those packs again. Unfortunately I haven't had any 08s. Rob seems to be saying in the review that new ones will come just as good in a while. He is mostly honest and has a heck of a lot of experience, so I would tend to follow his advice. Anyway I find newer production is a lot more trustworthy in general. If you are willing to wait a bit longer in case you don't immediately love the 08s I would go that way. JMHO.

I would love to appreciate them as much as everyone else seems to. i had 20 of these in cardboard packs from '98, finished them off a few years ago, they smoked great but just running out of flavour towards the end ... the most important thing for ageing is generally how good the tobacco is from the start ... so if they are tasteless at 7 years old they will remain tasteless [but i think everyone agrees cedar is better for ageing if you can!]
CanuckSARTech Posted November 27, 2010 Posted November 27, 2010 Fairs Fair. Kens guest bathroom door has been blocked by boxes of wine for a few weeks. We are not permitted to use his bathroom. The balcony is now promoted as the guest bathroom. Another reason why my wife wonders why all of my buddies enjoy drinking and smoking cigars on our back deck. The neighbours don't like it too much, though.

The only thing I really leave "aging" of cigars in the cardboard packs are the tubos versions of certain stuff (SDN4, Short Churchills, Magnum 46, etc.). I find if it's a tubos cigar, then storing in the cardboard box is just a packaging thing, since the tubos still benefits as it has that "wine in a bottle" effect, as MRN mentioned in his Encyclopaedia. If it's not a tubos, I want it in a full/proper box, as yes, they do age better there.
shrink Posted November 27, 2010 Posted November 27, 2010 ...a skin full of red wine Pretty cheeky to refer to your boss in that manner, Smithers. This is one of my favorite Hoyos, but I've had some disappointments with older cabs. The '08s show enormous potential, IMO. I've got a couple of SLB's laid down for a few years.
Guest DougB Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 After seeing this review I picked up an ORE JUL 03 cab and I cannot express how much I enjoy these fantastic cigars. A STEAL of a cigar...I have had some five times the price that had nowhere near the complexity, flavor, and over-all richness of this beautiful, practically cocoa-dusted beauty. I can see why Ken tongued it Hell I kinda do too. The flavor of the cigar in your mouth is really different and sweet....thanks for the review guys. I love watching them while smoking on my own deck.
CurtisEss Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 This review convinced me to pick up an ORE SEP 03 Cab (which I found a serendipitously short time after watching this review). Good cigar, the taste struck me as a bouquet of dark woods. Didn't quite hit the heights you guys had, but it's tough to plan for standouts like that!
tjohn7 Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Just got an '03 Des Dieux from a BOTL yesterday (I see you cigarcrash). Can't wait to light this bad boy up! The outtakes of these videos always make me cry of laughter.
