jamie140 Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 I would add Physical Graffiti to the above.
Colt45 Posted September 26, 2010 Author Posted September 26, 2010 Just to try and add some clarity to my initial posts (purely for conversation - no argument with member choices), I think it can be argued that VH not only influenced, but gave birth to much of the hard rock / metal of the early and mid '80s. I don't think there can be any argument that Eddie spawned a whole slew of guitarists (for better or worse). But in addition to that, there are hot-rodded Marshalls, Strat-style guitars in various pickup configurations, locking tremolos........ Again, in my simplistic opinion, more than simply influential or important - historic.
bassman Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 If you're talking guitar tech, the Chapman Stick took things to a whole new level.
Wicky Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 If you're talking guitar tech, the Chapman Stick took things to a whole new level. Agreed. Tony Levin was the first I saw using it way back with Peter Gabriel's band. Awesome! Gabriel was also one of the first to use The Linn drum computer around 1980. Groundbreaking stuff!

El Presidente Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Some great albums listed already. Went through an ACDC period over the past week. "Highway to Hell"...is there better road music? Honourable mention to LIVE "Throwing Copper". One of the great albums.

asmith Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 I saw the White Stripes and about 3 other albums from the 90s, OK so I may be younger than most of the old farts on here but surely you guys can suggest some albums that were released after I was born? Mezzanine by Massive Attack
Ken Gargett Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 is there better road music? best ever road song, bar none - golden earing's 'radar love'. daylight second (although any bruce also counts).

All the great music has been written Smithy. Accept the fact However feel free to post an album which is truly great (stands the test of time) from say 1999 on?

Perhaps the last time anybody really changed the face of pop music. Nirvana,Soungarden,STP,Alice in Chains,Rage,etc.etc.etc. Seriously, are there any honest rock bands left today? Sincerly, Mr. Old Fart
mkz Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 However feel free to post an album which is truly great (stands the test of time) from say 1999 on? Manowar - Warriors of the World (2002)

Accept the fact However feel free to post an album which is truly great (stands the test of time) from say 1999 on? What do you mean all the good music has been written, three words for you mate! Can't Touch This! To add to the list of great albums for the 2000s, on top of the White Stripes -Elephant Album. Kid A by Radiohead St Elsewhere by Gnarls Barkley American Idiot by Green Day
Wil Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Pearl Jam - Ten Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik Nirvana - Nevermind PJ Harvey - Rid of Me (most are awesome, but this is surely best)

Kid A by Radiohead St Elsewhere by Gnarls Barkley American Idiot by Green Day You know I am a big Jack White fan but not sure he has nailed the quintessential album. Think he has gotten closer with Raconteurs (Consolers of the Lonely) which is in my top 5 albums of this decade. Green Day American Idiot? yep, can make the cut but not my personal style. It can aggravate me ala Chilli Peppers. personal choice.
asmith Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 PJ Harvey - Rid of Me (most are awesome, but this is surely best) Hot
Ken Gargett Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Hot never heard of any of it. the line in the movie, the big chill, summed it up. nothing decent written after way back when.
JMH Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Not exactly a list of historic 'rock' albums, but some of my favourites. Jimi Hendrix - Axis: Bold As Love The Beatles - Abbey Road Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon Alice In Chains - Dirt Muse - Absolution Foo Fighters - The Colour & The Shape Radiohead - OK Computer/In Rainbows Nirvana - Nevermind Soundgarden - Superunknown RATM - The Battle of LA RHCP - BSSM
JMH Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Smithy - Mezzanine is a great album, but I'd call it trip hop rather than rock.
bolivr Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 To me rock n roll is about the attitude. There are lots of worthy nominations already, quality music which IMO goes beyond rock n roll to more artistic achievement. So from my collection there's the AC/DC albums on vinyl from the mid to late 70s, sex pistols, dead kennedys, even Janis Joplin, Rolling Stones, Marilyn Manson (oh yeah, seriously) That's rock Great thread, thanks Colt!
