investandprosper Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 This afternoon, my wife and I finished putting the outdoor shed together to clear some space for my man cave in the garage. After getting the kids to bed, I rummaged around in the vino for a nice stick to celebrate. I pulled out a near full box of FEB '10 CoRos that were great a few months back, but had fallen flat shortly after. The aroma was captivating, and I knew they were ready for another go. The wrapper is a few shades lighter than other CoRos I have seen and I am quite fond of it. It reminds me of the classic Cohiba wrappers you see in old photos and artwork. The aroma at cold is a sweet tobacco, with that nice barnyard scent I love on a Cohiba. I punched the cap with my Xikar 9mm, and was greeted by a perfect draw. The foot toasted easily, and after a few short puffs and we were off. I paired this smoke with a glass of Cragganmore 12 year, a flavorful single malt which goes perfectly with the cigar. The aroma is spot on Cohiba with a grassy sweetness and undertones of toffee. There is plenty of smoke, and I am quickly reminded why I fell in love with this particular box. I had my first Cohiba Robusto from this box, and the first few sticks were loaded with caramel and toffee. The scotch compliments it very well. I am getting hints of rich, sweet tobacco and lemongrass when exhaling through the nose. Really getting into the first third, and the caramel/toffee is really coming through. Medium body. The aroma is intense, and the smoke has a sweet, creamy flavor on the draw. Absolutely stunning. The ash forming is a very light gray, almost white (hard to pick up the color w/ my iPhone camera). Entering the second third, the cigar moves to a medium-full, and the flavor is much more powerful. The subtleties of the toffee and caramel are replaced with a rich, sweet grassiness that reminds me of being outdoors in a Summer's day. The burn is spot on, and the ash is absolutely beautiful. I wish I had an expensive camera to capture this, I'd frame it in my new man cave This is turning out to be a spectacular cigar. Into the final third, the strength moves to full and the caramel and toffee return in spades. The aroma is something special, like a vanilla bean. This is my favorite part of the cigar. The smoke is very creamy, and feels like you could chew it. This is what a CoRo SHOULD be like! It was a pleasure to nub this cigar. Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside that there are a boxfull of his brothers and sisters in the vino

nonameno Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Hello, Wonderful review of a special cigar I have yet to try. I just received a robusto splits from the Czar, so I will get the chance. Your review certainly set the flames of desire afire. A very nice review indeed, and I thought your pictures were lovely as well. Thank you for sharing, Curtiss
Leftridge Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Very nice review! Great cigar thats for sure!
Colt45 Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Thanks for the review. I'm also a fan of the deep tan wrapper vs. the very dark.
mbrody Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Thanks for the review John! The CoRo has always been a nice smoke, but I am still waiting for one to rock my world...
cigcars Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 *You guys make me ready to give robustos another chance!
Dbone Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Thank you for sharing your time with this cigar. Your pictures look like a a perfect example of excellent construction. Your tasting notes are very similar to mine as well. The Cohiba flavor is the most distinguished and recognizable of all marcs in my opinion. It's strong, bold, and unique. Is this due to the third fermentation? Or is that just a marketing gimmick.
michaelhealy Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 Thanks for the great review. I am yet to have a CoRo but it is on my radar. I love the Cragganmore as well. A mate and i finally finished a bottle last weekend at his Bucks weekend on the Gold Coast. i have picked out Bushmills 12 year old for my CoRo experience.
aavkk Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 awesome review of a great cigar. They can be great fresh and even better after 7+ years of age, its that in between that for me leaves something to be desired. Enjoy!
Ken Gargett Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 by chance, a mate dropped round yesterday with a coro, though probably an 07 or 08. terrific cigar though mine was a little tough and took well over two hours. worked very well with some fizz - 98 dom ruinart and i must confess, also looked great with a red, an 02 jadot bonnes mares (though i suspect banana leaves and dog turds would have looked good with it, though we were drinking it about ten years too early).
OZCUBAN Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 Great Review Pictures look great good little camera on the iPhone Cheers OZ
CanuckSARTech Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Well done. A CoRo is usually tops for me, and they're a standard in my humi. Nice review, and good pics too.
