Hello Gent’s

I’ve smoke a few cigars the last few weeks but I’ve been trying to set aside time for this guy who has been resting in my humidor for several months. I really enjoy the hoyo de monterrey marquee so when I found this stick I was very pleased. I just finished it and I must say it’s a very memorable smoke. I paired it with Ron Zacapa 15 year.

Pre-light:

Appearance: A nice Colorado wrapper with two prominent veins

Aroma: Cedar and not a whole lot else.

Feel: firm with a slight sponginess at the foot.

Draw: Fairly good but a slightly tight, almost perfect with a flavor best described as clove.

First third: Sweet hay with a slight spice in the nose with a very short finish followed by a sweet spice, maybe reminiscent of a pumpkin pie and some dark red fruit.

I figured it out. Apple cider is the best way to say that sweet spice instead of pumpkin pie. Towards the end of the first third I needed to correct the burn. After the correction the cigar picked up a mesquite flavor with a roasted nut finish.

Second third: Wood with a slight touch of cream on the finish followed by a strong mesquite and savory steak flavor. Cedar spice though the nose. Volume of smoke is lacking. The Smokey wood and savory meat flavors have picked up but a disappointing finish.

The savory flavors have stayed but now more of a roasted nut finish. Towards the end of the second third the roasted nut is more dominant with the smoky wood becoming more of a bar-b-q type flavor. A sweeter finish has appeared almost a caramel maybe brought on by the rum.

Final third: A bread type flavor has presented itself with the savory finish. Once again a dark red fruit sweetness has come about in the finish with a vanilla bean.

Nub: A cinnamon/ nutmeg flavor is rounding this stick out with a strong spice, roasted nut and that savory steak sticking in there.

In conclusion an outstanding complex cigar that needs time to sit down and appreciate its subtle flavors that could be missed while shooting the **** with fellow cigar lovers. Great with the rum and maybe it had a lot to do with the sweet flavors IMHO they worked hand in hand. All in all I am left with a great experance and a euphoric feeling. 90/100

Cons : short finish throughout the smoke and low volume of smoke.

A must try and I need to pick a few more up before they run out.

90/100 because of the cons listed above

I also have enjoyed the singles of this I have tried. Agree 100% with the flavour profile, sweet and meaty, I did a review a while back as well. Buy a box if you can!

Thanks for the review

An excellent, and IMHO, very accurate review. I really like this cigar. When young, it was very strong and tannic, but with a lot of complexity. I've been enjoying the cigar's slow but steady progress, becoming smoother, sweeter and more approachable over the past several years.

At this time, I would describe it as a Hoyo "PSD4", with great body, spice and a black pepper finish. These have the guts for the long haul. Simply superb.

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad other people agree with it. I kind of thought I was nuts but lately i've been picking up a sweet fruit flavor in cigars and very rarely I can pick up a meaty taste. I guess thats why they call it developing a palate
