redlir Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Hey all, I'm slowly starting to build a variety in the humidor. I've got some HUP #2's, Partagas P2's and D4's on the way, I'm wondering what I should go after next. I may need a bigger humidor shortly to take over from the desktop...
cigcars Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 *El Rey Del Mundo Choix Supreme * Ramon Allones Specially Selected ***and try a few Quay d'Orsays and also a Rafael Gonzales Coronas Extras, so your sampling can be of complete varieties of as many as you can afford. Then you can determine which suits your palate best.
CanuckSARTech Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 I recommend you order something for me next. Hey, Christmas is on the way soon enough! Seriously, I'd recommend you get some Montecristo and/or Cohiba tastes in there too, as well as some inexpensive Romeo y Julieta stuff. Czar has been having some great 10-boxes of Montecristo No. 2's lately, in HQ and PSP. Perfect size to try out your likes, get some in there, while still not being a full 25-box purchase therefore freeing up some cash flow for other stuff.

I consistently find myself enjoying the 2nd and 3rd '3rds' of cigars more than the 1st. I haven't had too many robusto's though, so maybe that format will be up my alley.

Ya, I guess I should be clear on what I have had in my humidor along the way. Alot of it has been hand finished stuff I'm generally trying to get away from. - Cohiba Siglo II / IV - Monte #2 / #4 ( loved both of these when you get an 'on' one had a couple of meh 4 boxes thus far) - Diplomatico #4 - Rafael Gonzales Petit Corona ( some of these were amazing, some were meh) - Punch Royal Selection #12 ( some of these were amazing, some were meh) - R & J Petit corona, milles fleurs - Partagas milles fleurs ( very bitter the ones I've had) - HUP Major Coronas - Monte Opens ... nuff said - HUP 46 and 50 .. didn't understand these at all, but I must have had 'off' offerings since everyone loves them. They reminded me of cigarette smoke.. no flavor what so ever
Colt45 Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 It never hurts to ask Rob or Lisa what they feel is of high quality at the moment, and take it from there. Let them know what your typical preferences are, but also try to be open to things you might not normally consider. And don't forget to post a review
investandprosper Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 I just had my first Upmann Mag 50 yesterday, it was amazing. Makes me want to get a box. Let yours rest for a while then try another.

mbrody Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Redir, +1 on having Rob/Lisa/Smithy recommend what is hot, or have them pick you up a HQ box. Current "good" samples of 08/09 Mag50/46 should be very flavorfull and robust (when coming from the 25/50 boxes). Any cigar can have some duds or a whole dud box. Having them pick it for you or provide HQ just lessens the chance!

I have no idea what the box codes were so who knows lol.
CanuckSARTech Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Cohiba Robustos and Partagas Serie D No. 4's are a good go-to to stock, and something from San Cristobal de La Habana (La Fuerza, maybe) especially if you like the nuttier profile.

I think it is a nutty profile I like.. also that buttery flavor that can come through sometimes. I'm interested to try the D4's I have coming. I've never had a 'real' partagas so it should be interesting.

Check out this thread: Cigar Flavour Wheel And then this thread: Classify your flavour characteristics of the following Both very helpful threads for you then. So, I vote for SDN4 and then LCDLH for you. And at one point, you do need to get CoRo's - not nutty, but smooth cream and vanilla bean refinement.
Wil Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 I look forward to the day CoRo is my 'go to'! Partagas Shorts! Can't lose.
CanuckSARTech Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 I look forward to the day CoRo is my 'go to'!Partagas Shorts! Can't lose. It doesn't have to be an everyday stick, if that's what you mean. What I mean by go-to is those types (CoRo's, Party SDN4's, Monte 2's and 4's) that just consistently perform, time and time again. Ones that you can rely on to be that one cigar a week to hit a 90 for you for sure. A reliable stock that should be in everyone's humidor. No, not an everyday go-to (if that's how you think I mean it), but a flavour and quality go-to.
Wicky Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 +1 on the Partagas shorts - love them! anytime/anywhere. A must have.
gsmoke Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 As a relative newbie to habanos (about a year, give or take) I have had your exact experiences with Mag 46. Could be the samples I got were just duds. In any case, my favorite thus far is the RASS. Have definitelyhad some duds but the good ones have been fantastic. I find I am partial to fruity and chewy flavors in my smokes, for what it's worth, and these deliver on that front. Have also really enjoyed SLR Regios. Oh, and Partagas Shorts rock as well.
Puros Y Vino Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 Here's my take. H Upmann Mag 50. HDM Epicure Especial. Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios <- Just had my first one tonight. Pure bliss.
CanuckSARTech Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 ...Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios <- Just had my first one tonight. Pure bliss. Wait 'til you get to the Secretos then, if you haven't already.
kafreeman Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 There are some interesting "splits" in the store right now... im eyeing them...
Puros Y Vino Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 Wait 'til you get to the Secretos then, if you haven't already. Really? It just so happens I have a box of 10 in my humidor. Hmmm... after enjoying the Genios I'm going to have to pull one of these babies out.

Hmmm... after enjoying the Genios I'm going to have to pull one of these babies out. I personally found (and I've read reviews that many others are the same) that the Genios and the Magicos were so-so. The Secretos, although smaller, seems to have a much stronger and better focused flavour profile - it definitely seems like much more bang for the buck. Everyone has different preferences and tastes, though. But I find they outperform the others 2-to-1, easily. After trying about 2 or 3 singles of each one, the Secretos were the only ones that I bought a few boxes of. Just my 2 cents - take it for what it's worth.
dizedean Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 I don't thing you have any Boli or Trini products on your list. I always have .. Trini Reyes.. Trini Coloniale Boli PC Boli CE Give them a try..

Would be interested in trying a Secretos to see if that theory hold true.
godfathermint Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 I'd say get one of the new split boxes that Czar has put up. That way you can get a wide variety of cigars and it might help you choose the next time you want to buy =D
