El Presidente Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 I am drinking the remnants of a bottle of Hungarian Red which Ken brought around for a vid review this morning. Smithy is away so there is a pile of work. Lise is a rock, checked on me a half hour ago....God bless her. Is there a better cigar than the Partagas 898 varnished....Seriously? Rich, decadent, all satisfying. All Hail the 898 Varnished! In my top 3 Habanos currently being produced!
khomeinist Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Better? Are they still rolling a few Connie 2s? If not, this is up there with the Cohiba CE as the best of Cuba (hence the world). Butter your toast brother!
jay8354 Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 There maybe better cigars but they have to be extraordinary. Partagas 898V are also in my top 3. Love them.
OZCUBAN Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Never had the pleasure ,it would seem i am missing out on something special Cheers OZ

I think 898 varnished is one of the most consistent cigars out there very much like the PSD4 love both equally though 898 is a power house from get go.

Last 898 I had was at the end of the last Sydney gathering (many thanks Elie!). Absolutely fabulous, and definitely deserving to go done in history as one of the top cigars.
mazolaman Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 conversely,I had an unvarnished 898 the other day,and it was generally dull, with no real flavour or development.Odd.
Guest rob Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 You dont need my answer to this question, Pres. The P 898V and the Upmann Sir Winston are my 2 most purchased and smoked cigars. Though I must admit disspointment with my SOA 09 boxes... underfilled and extremely loose draw. Otherwise, this is my staple, go-to, cigar.
shrink Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 The only consistently better regular production Partagas offering was the Series du Connoissuer. Sadly, these have been discontinued. When I want a reliable, satisfying Partagas I reach for the 898V. The 2006's are super.
chinamike233 Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 total noob question: what's the difference between varnished and non-varnished?
SethLG Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Always enjoyed the 898, great flavors, and great smoke. What are the top 3 Habanos being produced in your opinion?
PointSource Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 I just had about 6 of these from 09 that were incredible....
Habanos2000 Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Agreed! I just came upon them recently and was blown away by the flavors and depth.
groza Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 total noob question: what's the difference between varnished and non-varnished? The 898V is longer cigar than the 898UV and the characteristic box is , well, varnished. I can't say anything regarding taste because I have tried neither one but according to this thread, I really should
thechenman Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 The Partagas 898V is hands down my favorite regular production Cuban cigar. Love the taste, the complexity, the size...
PigFish Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Yes! The Partagas Seleccion Privada is (was) a better cigar! JMHO I think this question largely depends on a current, or historical focus on the question. Most of these questions I view with the perspective of historical significance and personal memory. If I were a new smoker with less experience to draw on I may have agreed fully with your statement. So now that we have established that they are a good cigar.... the question is now when Tabacuba will be putting them on the discontinued list? -Piggy
PigFish Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 total noob question: what's the difference between varnished and non-varnished? Varnished box, dalia cigar. Unvarnished box, cervantes cigar. A box comparison (below)
olotti Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 I began smoking these last year mainly because I was unsure if I would like the size. Not only is this a completely satisfying cigar but I absolutely am in love with the Dalia size, it just feels so right in the hand. The psd4 has been a staple of mine but I often find myself reaching more fore these and I think it's because of the size, still love the psd4 though.
Deano Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Yes! The Partagas Seleccion Privada is (was) a better cigar! JMHO Absolutely agree! Although the 8-9-8V is no slouch it does not compare to a good SP. One of my real disappointments when they were discontinued.
jawofboston Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Had one on my deck the other day, watching the sun set. Damn fine cigar! There should be more Dalias sized cigars available - they're more manageable than churchill or DCs, but they have just a tad more girth than the No. 1's, which I think makes them the perfect size. I'll tell you what though - every now and then I'll smoke one that really packs a punch!
dizedean Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 I love the Dalia size. Have smoked only about half a dozen of the 898V over the last two years. Purchased them as singles to see what everyone raves about. I don't get what all the fuss is about. I loved the Connie 3 and am enjoying a box of Connie 2's now. Maybe I have just been unlucky but the 898V has been a dud for me. DSS
MrGlass Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 I bought a box of 10 to see what all the hype was about earlier in the year. Only smoked two so far, but they haven't been what I was expecting. The first effort was a dud - no flavour at all. The second I actually tried writing a review on a few weeks ago, but haven't posted it yet as a result of dislocating my elbow I'll continue to try, but for me, there are better out there.
bassman Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 They're not bad, but I'd take an 02 Paerty Lonsdale or BCE over it any time. 07 SLR DC too!

My favorite vitola.
Mr Peales Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 The epilogue of the great thin-gauge Partagas line-up. The 898 is a a great example of why we smoke tobacco. Devour them!
