OZCUBAN Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 Hi all Just a quick post on the distances involved in "our " backyard How Big is the Milky Way? Imagine that our entire Solar System were the size of a quarter. The Sun is now a microscopic speck of dust, as are its nine planets, whose orbits are represented by the flat disc of the coin. How far away is the nearest star to our sun? In our model, Proxima Centauri (and any planets that might be around it) would be another quarter, two soccer fields away. This is the typical separation of stars in our part of the galaxy. And our Galaxy is just a speck of dust compared to the Universe as we know it Cheers OZ If there are other life forms out there do you think they have discovered Cigars

Probably not ,But i bet they still have the Serie Du Connaisseur No.1,2,3 and the Punch Royal Selección No.11,12. And in that parallel universe there would be no outrageous Tobacco Taxes and plenty of places in which to smoke. I look at smoking a good Cigar,to releasing the natural Elements back to there natural state back to where they came from "The Stars " Cheers OZ

joeypots Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 How about this. The nearest star to our sun, Alpha Centauri C, is 4.3 light years away. If we had a space ship that moved at 1,000,000 mph ( one million mph) it would take, hang on to your hat, 3,000 years to get to it.

Better yet, would smoked cigars turn back into unsmoked cigars? If you had one cigar that was a 100, you could keep just smoking that one.

I looked it up and I found that Eagles, Kansas and the Scorpions all have a version of the song. I'm not sure which one comes on the radio, but they sound like the Eagles. But I guess it can also be Kansas... Does anyone know for sure??

Saturn Compared to Earth The equatorial diameter of Saturn is 120,536 km; that's about 9.5 times bigger than the diameter of the Earth. The surface area of Saturn is 83 times the area of Earth, and the volume is 764 times the volume of Earth. In other words, you could fit 764 planets the size of Earth inside Saturn. Finally, the mass of Saturn is 95 times the mass of the Earth. One interesting comparison between Earth and Saturn is density. Earth is the densest planet in the Solar System, while Saturn is the least dense. The density of Earth is 5.52 g/cm3, while the density of Saturn is 0.687 g/cm3. In other words, Earth is 8 times as dense as Saturn. Earth takes 24 hours to complete a day, while Saturn takes 10 hours and 32 minutes. A year on Earth is, well, 1 year, while a year on Saturn lasts 30 years!
JMH Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Hubble Ultra Deep Field Edit - thought I'd put in a bit of info about this photo. The UDF is an image of a small patch of sky that looked relatively empty. It's a long, narrow image (kind of like the photographic equivalent of one of those huge ice core samples that they take in antarctica), that looks back about 13 billion years, and contains an estimated 10,000 galaxies! It's the deepest photo of the universe that humans have taken so far.
