El Presidente Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Took a lovely box of VRU (HQ) to the Melbourne Shindig. Outstanding. Deep rich roast coffee bean, bitter cooking chocolate, damp earth. Glorious and the current king of the Piramide.

MIKA27 Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 As you know Prez, they are my most favourite cigars, how thoughtful! I absolutely love the VR Unicos and the box you shared with us Wednesday night was magnificent. Thankyou. I must buy a box soon seeing I have but a handful left.
MrGlass Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 I've only tried two of these. My first was actually one of my first "real" Cubans, and I didn't enjoy it all that much because I was expecting it to be something it wasn't. The second crack at it was not that long ago, and I absolutely loved it. These are high on my wishlist, and once I can get around to obtaining a wine fridge to store them in I'll be keeping my eye out for a suitable box.
mhartnett Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 How do these compare to the Famosos? I love those, but I might get a box of Unicos instead if the profile is fairly similar.
Bartolomeo Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Love these! Amazing how much more money they are compared to the Upmann #2 and Monte #2 Love the VR line of smokes! Bart
ahbroody Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Only had one but it didnt wow me. I prefer recent production psp#2 for power and the upman #2 for complexity. Dont know what year the vr was as it was a single. Guess I need to give this another go.
bunburyist Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 great smokes. Top of the piramide tree for a few years now imo
Kangaroo495 Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 I've only smoked em young - a few times when I was in Cuba, and once or twice here. They were all outstanding until the last third (which I put down to youth). My favourite in the VR line is the Classicos - wow! But I think it's discontinued...
SethLG Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 It is a great pyramide! It's a shame it doesn't get the attention it deserves. Have a couple sitting right now.
bassman Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Nice smoke. Not overly powerful, but always has a distinctive cocoa flavor. Still, I'll take a PSP or HQ MC#2 over any other priamide.
thechenman Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 For this vitola...I'm currently favoring the Dip No. 2. Unicos is great, but Dip2s are better right now IMHO. Monte 2s are just not cutting it presently.
bigfunkyg Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Currently smoking a box of 07 and have two boxes of 08's resting. When on the 07's have been fantastic, but some seem to suffer from underfilling. King of the pyrmaides? They have their days at the top for sure. I have had some pretty great, MC #2 and PSP2 as well. G
khomeinist Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 yeah. not sure about the 'top of the pyramid' thing but these are quite good. I find the flavors rich and appropriate for any time of day. I have trouble holding on to these after buying a box. All in all a great cigar.

Glorious and the current king of the Piramide. I did say "Current". Based on what I have seen and tasted over last 3 months (current stock), I have no doubt it is a toss up between Diplomatico Number two and Vegas Robaina Unicos. They have stood out both in terms of wrapper, blend and construction. Flavour wise they bring very different things to the table. Love them both. Give the VR the nod for its consistency of flavour depth. it is a month to month proposition. Another great month of Monte 2's and the challenge would be on.

Pres, it seems you have hit a great run of Dip #2s from 2007? Are you seeing any more recent good quality ones? or do you feel their run was 2007? I have a great box from 2007 from you that has been tremendous and I noticed more in the HQ forum from 2007. I also noticed recent HQ Monte #2s have been from 2009? Are the 2009s looking superior then 2008? How about the VRs for dates? Thanks!
arnehd Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Thanks for the idea. Bought a single I don'T know where some time ago. Will go down the humi-box and get it. My second VR ever. The last was a familiar, which made me give up cigars for quite a while. Wish me luck!
arnehd Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 Don't know the vintage, since buying it as a single. It wasn't spectacular, it was merely good. It started out earthy and there was freshly ground coffee, but without sweetness. This developed soon as a burnt sugar flavor, maybe accompanied with very dark chocolate. It was definetely more on the bitter side, that might have something to do with the Jever beer. But the draw was perfect. I was definetely tired and when I woke up this morning I saw what I had left over, half? SO not to make anybody sick, but I didn't want to let that gp to waste. I cut about an inch of and put it to use. And it was'nt even that bad, considering what I had done. I've had some problems with the piramides ? , the best having been the diplo2. But this was not that bad. Maybe some more time. Now I'm looking forward to that Don ALejandro and the RE from spain.
Bahnofstrasse Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 Had a marvelous single out of the Park Hyatt humidor in Zurich. Loved it so much I had to buy a Box. Also enjoy the Famosos. Have had nothing but wonderful experiences with the VR line...
